    - Switch easily between DHCP and Fixed IP on Notebook I use wireless at home and when travelling on my notebook. For some reason AT&T insist on having fixed IP addresses at home and on the road it's all dynamic of course. Surely there is an easy way to switch between the 2 profiles in Win XP without having to go and change the actual network setting every time?     - XP Pro and Home won't allow access I have windows XP Pro on one computer (call it "A") and XP Home on another computer (call it "B"). they are connected together via a linksys router (ethernet cables). both computers have all of their drive letters set up for file sharing (including allowing to change files on the network). When I click under "my network places" on each computer, both computers show up. And under A's "my network places" where it lists the "B" computer, I can access B's drives via the A computer. However, on the B computer under my network places, when i try to access the drives on the A computer (in fact just double clicking on the name of A computer) gives the error "[computer name] is not accessible. You might not have persission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The network path was not found." But all of the drives on A computer are set up for file sharing with permission to change files.     - Wireless no longer working on after Windows automatic update While the wired connection works fine, My wireless connection seems to have stopped working after the automatic windows update yesterday. I have a Toshiba Satelite A105 laptop, with Windows XP Home Edition SP2. The list of wireless networks comes up fine, but when I try to connect to my wireless network it's not working. It just says "waiting for network", then it refreshes the wireless list and does nothing. While it says it's waiting, the little wireless symbol in the system tray does nothing however, it just stays there with the X on it. Any ideas how I can troubleshoot this problem?     - Another "VPN Sign-on Keeps Popping Up" I have a VPN connection that I use intermittently, and it has started trying to connect every time I change webpages. It has "Never dial a connection" checked. It seems to think this is the default connection... when the only default should be the wireless connection (which does NOT have the ability to be selected as default).     - 1 out of 6 PCs cannot connect to My Network Places Hi I have a network of 6 computers via wired router. I am only able to access 5 out of the 6 PCs on My Network Places. The 1 computer in question: - I have run the 'Set up a home or small office network' wizard but I still cannot see the files/folders of the other PCs. - I have successfully connected to the internet via the network - When I click 'view workgroup computers', nothing appears - When I click 'view workgroup computers' from any of the other PCs, I am only able to see the PC I am having a problem with but unable to view/access the files/folders when I double click on the icon.     - NET WORK PROBLEM SHARING PRINTER I presently have two computers , one with windwos xp home ,the other with windows xp professional. I run my internet to both of them using a router. I want to share a printer between thwe two. I tried using network wizard to set a network between the two computers. set everything up as requested. Using the same workgroup.when running the one with xp pro the program seemed to work but when I ran the network wizard and the xp home computer it stopped and gave an error and cannot complete setup. I turned the printer on to share but when I go back to ad printers and check the printer showed as not shared and cannot chane it to share.     - IE cannot show my updated program! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve following problem? I am running a tomcat program with database, and using IE as an interface. I have run this program before, and the text is too large with wrong description, so I change it, but when I run this program again, the text does not change, even through I have checked the JSP script with no error, the IE still show the previous version of JSP results.     - Apps cannot access internet On my laptop, wireless connection, none of my applications can access the internet. I do not recall making any changes to any settings that could have made this occur. I've tried both IE and FF and triple checked the proxy settings. iTunes, other applications also cannot access. The wireless connection indicates signal good and connected. I disabled Zone Alarm and rebooted with the same results. Also ran the MSFT TCP/IP stack reset tool to no avail.     - XP Pro to XP Home wireless network I have two laptops at home, mine running XP Home edition and one from work running XP Professional, which is on the network at work through a VPN (once I log in). Both are connected to my cable modem by a wireless router, connecting wirelessly without problems. What I want to do seems simple: I want to operate one computer from the other, that is, I'm at the work laptop all the time and have it connected to my extermal mointor and so on, and I'd like to be able to access the home laptop from the work laptop. I've tried networking and nothing works, after following step by step instructions to install an app from Microsoft called "network setup" it told me it can't because the work machine is "on a domain". I've tried various other things and the closest I've gotten is logging into the one computer from the other over the Internet (Citrix remote pc) but it's slow and not what I need. Any advice welcome.     - Had two of the same IP's, how do I clear the damage? Hi All, I set up an OpenVPN tunnel between two sites. I goofed and had the same IP address (192.168.255.100) on each end. I have corrected the problem. Problem: every machine on the network works fine with the new IP addresses (192.168.255.100-local, & 101-remote), except the original machine (192.168.255.50) I was doing the testing on. It can not see the 192.168.255.101 at the remote location. (Everyone else can, but not .50) Is it possible that its routing tables are messed up? How do I do a mass clear and start over?     - Belkin Wireless Router Trouble I have a Belkin Wireless Router that I use to wirelessly hook in to m home network, while I'm wired to my Xbox 360 in the other room. I hav absolutely no trouble connecting immediately, and I get great speed, bu it constantly looks for a certificate to log me on, and never finds it and it will from time to time, pop up a message telling me that window was unable to find a certificate to log me on to the server. It's jus driving me nuts that it won't just connect already.     - Problem sharing external (USB) drive with XP Pro I have a home LAN consisting of an XP nPro (XPP) desktop, an XP Home (XPH) desktop, a Vista wireless laptop and an Ubuntu wireless desktop. XPP and XPH have external USB drives in addition to their internal ones. I have set up sharing using the article by Ron Lowe and Steve Winograd at <http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/whole.htm>, but while the XPP external drive is visible from the other computers, it is not accessible. Simple file sharing is off at XPP and the Guest account is disabled. Each machine has an account with the same username. I've gone through the Lowe/Winograd article and I'm pretty sure I've done everything they say, but I still get that "you don't have permission..." error message.     - Lose control of ICS connection from client - only reboot gets it b I have a desktop running XP SP2 whose internet connection I share. I specified that clients could control that connection. That way lazy old me can sit at my laptop (XP and SP3) and dial out. It works just fine - most of the time. Sometimes, generally after having my laptop come out of standby or hibernate, I can no longer control the connection. Network Connections does not even show the connection (which it normally does). One really bizarre aspect is that if my better half has already started the connection on the desktop, I can still get out to the internet from my laptop, even though I cannot see it in Network Connections, and it does not show up on the task bar, either. So far, the only way I can get control and visibility back is to reboot the laptop. I don't have to reboot the desktop that has the connection that is being shared. Obviously, I would rather not have to do that. Is there some other way I can kick-start the access to the ICS? By the way, even though the laptop now has SP3, this happened under SP2 as well. The network connection between the laptop and the desktop is a Linksys wireless router, if that matters. I have tried rebooting said router to see if that fixes the problem, but it does not. Thanks.     - can't reach network printers i have 2 different xp pro pc's on 2 different networks that can't ping the network attached printers on those networks. other workstations can ping the printers and these 2 workstations without a problem. these 2 workstations can ping other workstations on the network without a problem. i have the firewalls disabled on both pc's and the norton firewall is disabled on both pc's. both have that latest updates installed. there's nothing in the printer setup that can block a particular ip. the printers are from ricoh/savin, toshiba and hp. any ideas? thanks in advance -- a few miles from nowhere...     - mapped srives "fail" I experience this problem at 2 dififerent sites now. It is as though mapped drives take long to "activate" after startup. The apps make use of mapped drives to common data on the server. On restart of a pc and then opening of the app we get errors relatinf to not finding server data. If we close the app and go into explorer, then we can view the contents of the mapped drives. Then we restart the app and it "connects" to the data and runs fine, till we restart a pc. The one network is a 2003 Server and pc's in a workgroup, the other site if XP as a server and pc's in a workgroup Any suggestions?     - Network Shares via VPN OK one way, rejected the other way Hi There, I am hoping that someone can help me with this, as i have no more hair left to tear out. Allow me to explain. We have two sites linked via a vpn tunnel, two different domains, one site in the UK and one site in Ireland. Both sites can ping each others routers and main servers. RDP works either way The problem arises when trying to open a network share located in the Ireland site. For example, sitting on a machine in the uk, open a run command and enter \\192.168.16.2 - after about 30 seconds to a minute i get a error â?? The network path was not found. If i enter a hidden share ie \\192.168.16.2\c$ after about 30 seconds a password authentication request box appears asking for credentials. I enter the domain administrator user name and password (which i know are correct as i have performed a rdp to the same machine) and wait â?? after about 30 seconds, the authentication requestor is back again. I have also tried various combinations of the username ie administrator@mydomain.com mydomain\administrator â?? etc All result in a brief pause then the requestor is back. Now going from the other direction is a different matter â?? if i RDP onto the server in Ireland, then open the Run command and put in a ip for a server in the uk â?? i get another password authentication request, i enter administrator and its domain password, after a brief moment, i am presented with the shares on that server.     - Mystery downloads I use a wireless broadband connection to the internet with a 3GB monthly limit (uploads + downloads). Yesterday my systems apparently downloaded 900+ MB and I have no idea what application or website did that to me. I'd be very concerned about malware if this traffic were upload traffic, but since it's download, I feel it's probably some poorly designed web site I was connected to for a while -- is that a reasonable assumption? In any case, I would really like to find a utility that would log, for each IP address I connect to, the upload and download volumes. Can anyone point me to a reliable program that will do that? I'm using WinXP Pro SP2 updated to date. I have several PCs on a LAN connected to the net via a wireless modem using Windows ICS.     - network access to shares always try to authenticate but fails I have 3 PCs running XP Pro on a pear-to-pear network. On one of them I cannot access the shares. I can see them but if I click (using Win Explorer) I get asked for a password. If I use Simple File Sharing it ask for a pasword for the guest account - although there definately is none (I have verifie this with "net user guest"). If I use Classis File Sharing and assign rights to a known user, the password fails. It just keeps taking me back to the login dialogue box.     - Offline folders I have 2 destop pc's and a laptop, that I keep for business, and on a PC I have a shared folder for service manuals, time sheets, ect... Until Saturday all 3 had XP Pro SP2, and PC's AM2, XP64, and Laptop C640 had all access behind a Router/firewall with Shared folders, and offline folders that sync'd to/from my laptop. On Friday, I upgraded the AM2 to a new MB, CPU, and ram, and then did an inplace upgrade to the OS, to get the new hardware recognized and drivers loaded. Since all three are all on the same workgroup, I renamed the shares to a more logical naming so that first the PC name, followed by the drive letter, then the shared name. NOW. I have updated the AM2 to XP SP3, the XP64 also, and wanted to do the laptop also, but wanted to sync the folders first, but I needed to rename the shared offline folders to reflect the new names, but from the sp2 laptop, the newly renamed folders on AM2 don't show up in network neighborhood. Summary: Laptop c640 XPSP2 sees and accesses XP64 XPsp3 and all shared drives/folders in Network neighborhood both ways. PC AM2 XPsp3 sees and accesses XP64 XPsp3 and all shared drives/folders in Network neighborhood both ways. PC AM2 XPsp3 sees and accesses Laptop c640 XPSP2 and all shared drives/folders in Network neighborhood both ways. BUT Laptop c640 XPSP2 can only see PC AM2 XPsp3 and 1 OLD sharename but nothing else. The limited user can only get on the internet if an admin logs in first then switches users. The admin accounts can get on the internet anytime.     - Network Sharing Hi, I have 3 Computers. All computers Have Windows XP Pro on them. The 1st of the three computers I use as a server storing all my pictures and video etc on there and I control this PC remotely from my PC (3rd PC). The 2nd PC is a Family PC The 3rd My PC I want to have the same folders shared up for both computer 2 and 3 but I want only computer 3 to be able to delete/add new files.     - access problem Have a small peer to peer network [3 machines], all machines can view and access the contents of the shared documents folder on each other except for one machine. It's icon appears in My Network Places \View Workgroup Computers, but if I try to access the shared documents folder I receive the message "access denied you do not have permission to use this network resource, contact the administrator". Yet it can access all the other machines' shared documents folder.     - What causes the wireless card to activate? I have Windows XP SP2 with a D link wireless adapter that communicates with a Microsoft MN 700 wireless router using 802.11g. Is there any software out there that can tell you what particular program is communicating wirelessly with the router? This computer is periodically (about every 20 seconds) communicating with the router. I am not downloading anything and I have no known applications open and running.     - How can I get in my LAN when I boot from a WinPE disk? I have a home network of three computers, all under WinXP via modem NetComm NB5Plus4. I have a few boot disks, including Acronis emergency disk. If I boot a computer by this CD (from Acronis), I easily get in local area network and can save backup (a disk image) of one computer to another, i.e. through my network. It means that the operating system of this disk "sees" neighbouring computers in my network. But if I boot a computer by a WinPE disk, I cannot get in other computers of my network.     - Enable/Disable net as limited user Of safety reasons I would like to enable and disable my network connection, just enable it when I am surfing and disable it when I am not. When I am working as Administrator it is simple but I would like to do this as a limited access user. I have put a shortcut to a connection on the desktop. If I rightclick it, I get a popup meny with Enable or Disable. As Administrator, I can switch by clicking, as limited access user it is grayed out. How do I as a limited access user get permission to enable/disable? I have two Network Connections, "1394 Connection" and "Local Area Connection" although I do only have one physical (Ethernet) connection. How does this work? Are these connections two drivers connected in series, one handling the hardware and the other communicating with the local net I assume my apartment is connected to? Is this the way it is?     - WINXP Pro computers disappear from Network Places I have a network of five computers, all windows xp pro, no servers or domains, and all in same workgroup. Static IP (manually configured, not DHCP). When I restart my pc I can see all of them in Network Places, then after about 20 minutes, 3 of them (including mine) disappear. I can ping them, and still access mapped drives but can not see them in network places. I have checked ipconfig, ran cdiag, and browstat. XP firewall is disabled, I have KIS 7.0 and tried with and without it disabled with same results. The network has run fine for about 2 years, then about 2 weeks ago the PC's start disappearing. I have checked the browser service, even stopped them and restarted, checked power management, file and print sharing enabled, and for IP address conflicts. All computers have unique ip's, same subnet, dns, workgroup name, and default gateway. If you need more info let me know. Thanks in advance for any help.     - Peer to Peer problem Two computers, an HP desktop & a Toshiba laptop, share this problem. They can get to the Internet wireless through a Checkpoint firewall appliance/ap and email is no problem. They cannot see each other for peer to peer file sharing. Turned off XP's firewall and disabled F-Secure all together but to difference. As an experiment I connected them with a crossover cable and assigned IP's but still can ping each other. If I connect my laptop, either one of them can ping me but I cannot ping either of them. I can find no other software installed that might explain this. The F-Secure is current and up to date and runs a daily scan so virus or trojans are unlikely. The HP desktop has Internet Connection sharing turned on even though the Internet is through the CheckPoint appliance. Any ideas anyone? John.     - Can't connect to server, see pics, download, sites etc... So it all started when Maxthon needed this update for something, I downloaded it, let it install. yada yada, then all of a sudden my browser goes berserk! and it can't run T_T SO I switch back over to IE while I downloaded the original maxthon again and fixed that problem. Well, after that happened some websites I frequent wouldn't come up, I'd get that annoying "can not find website" or "can not connect to server" error message. I thought I had a virus, so I downloaded trojan remover (*great* program, I'd swear by it) and it searched and destroyed some nasty ones but my problem only seems to be getting worse. So I fgured, hmm, maybe the simple version of maxthon screwed up my system. I'll check IE and see if it needs updated. So, I try and download IE7 and install it but first the box that is supposed to pop up DID pop up, but the page couldn't be viewed. So I clicked save target as on the download link and got the message "Cannot connect to server" My internet connection is running just fine. I have no idea what the problem is. People have told me I need to reset my DNS settings, but then my brother told me I needed to go to Windows Update, so I did...and I can't even get to the page, but I can get to the rest of the website. Also, some types of pictures on the internet won't show up for me either. On Weatherbug, all the images on that program don't show. On Yahoo and some forums I go to , the smilies don't work either.     - Unusual Dialup to LAN request Is it possible to set up a Win XP computer such that it can receive an incoming dialup call and allow the dialing computer access to a LAN? So: Computer A direct dials Computer B using 56K modems. Computer B is connected to an Ethernet LAN. Computer A now has access to the LAN.     - Poor TCP performance over WAN with out-of-order packets Hi! I have the next problem: We have a 12 Mibt/s WAN. The delay is 40ms. There are out-of-order packets, from 10 packet come back 3 in incorrect order. Because of this, between two Windows (Windows XP, 2000 Professional, 2000 Server, or 2003 Server) is the maximum bandwidth 800kbit/s over TCP. It doesnâ??t matter, wich protocoll is in application layer (SMB, FTP, SSH,â?¦). In test environment is the same case, if i set out-of-order packets over the test connection (with random delay). Between two Linux isnâ??t any problem, they use the maximum available bandwith. And the most interesting thing: If the sender is Linux and the reciever is Windows, isnâ??t any problem. But if the sender is a Windows machine, it sends only with 800kbit/s. (Over the WAN, and in the test network too.)     - Offline files question Hi. Sorry if I over cross-posted! I have one staff member who travels a lot, and she has historically manually copied her entire (2GB) User directory to her (XP) laptop before travelling. Over a few years, this resulted in about five different versions of her directory, a situation I want to prevent from happening again. So I looked into enabling offline files, the theory being that there would be an intelligent process managing the syncronization of files between her laptop and the server (Small Business Server 2003). However, when I enable this and open the Offline Files Folder, what we see is an unordered list of a gazillion files, not at all in their heirarchical directory structure. It's impossible to find something like this. Is there a better solution? Are we not using Offline Files properly? If she copies her entire directory Any input is greatly appreciated!     - Problem with xp pro connecting to xp for gaming I have 2 xp sp2 home edition computers connected with one xp pro computer on a LAN. I can ping all three from all three. I can access all files and run programs. The only thing I can't do is get games (or my homeschoooling program) to work accross the network. The 2 xp sp2 computers do work and join the same game with zone alarms on and without. The xp pro can see the game or home schooling service running but won't connect. The xp pro computer just tells me it is 'unable to join game'. I have turned 'on' guest accounts. I have made the user and passwords all the same. I have tried both simple and classic file sharing. I have tried running in safe mode after disabling all firewalls, still nothing. I have disabled security policy features and enabled full access. I've been reading many MS KB articles about it and I understant XP _Pro_ should allow 10 connections. It is only XP + Apache & PHP. No antivirus, no Office, no nothing. In the network I have 7 computers having 2000 SP4, XP SP3 and Vista SP1, but it does not seem to depend on which ones are first. It only allows 5.     - Setting up a network in Vista OK, I admit it, I'm not a computer guy. I recently bought a new (Vista Home Premium) PC to replace my XP PC. On the XP PC I had a wireless network I could access with my PDA and laptop from almost anywhere in my house. With the Vista PC I fail constantly. I have read a handful of web articles on how to accomplish this but I apparently am missing a step. The Netgear router is working on the Vista PC. Firewall on the laptop is (when I'm trying to get a connection) disabled. The Network status on the laptop and PDA show a good signal. How do I troubleshoot this? FWIW, 'Connect to a Network' on the Vista PC and laptop show 2 networks - one secured and one unsecured. I don't know why. All I want is the secured.     - Problem with a connection windows XP Home SP3 I have a wired network that has 11 or 12 computers connected all running a mix of XP home & Vista. I have a 3com switched hub with 32 ports and all network cards are 10/100. I have one computer that has a program that gets shared by users on the network and everything works fine except for one laptop running XP home. The laptop can see all of the computers on the network and can share files with all but one. I can access the drive through network neighborhood and move around to all locations on that drive. My problem is that if I try to map the drive like I normally do it says no connections to that system are available. I can go to any other computer on the network and map to the computer with no problem. I am only having the problem with the laptop. I have move the network connection to another port and that didn't help. Two days ago I was able to make the connection and it worked all day with no problem. I am totally confused with this one. Another thing is that I can take the same network cable and move it to another computer and I can work with that one no problem. It is something to do with a setting on the laptop.     - Insufficient access to your computer to connect to selected printe Hello, I work for a school and am having the below problem sporadically in various computer labs. At login, we use a script that executes net use commands to connect to the appropriate printers for individual users. Sometimes the printers are not added correctly, but no error is given at login. We have placed an icon on the desktop which is just a shortcut to \\computername\printername that students can use to install a printer if it didn't auto-install at login. But occassionally when the printers don't automatically install and students try to connect to the printer with this icon they get the message "You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer." The weird part is that if they click the icon again and again, eventually it will work - they connect to the printer and are able to use it. Sometimes clicking it a 2nd time works, sometimes it takes up to 10 times, but eventually they are able to connect to the printer. In my research I have seen references to the "Prevent users from installing printer drivers" setting in local security policy which is disabled. I have also seen that people get this error when they do not have access to the spool directory, or they are not power users, neither of which is the case. We will see this in a computer lab sometimes for days or weeks at a time, then it will disappear and return again weeks later. It won't happen to all of the labs at the same time. The printers are HP Laserjet 3500n and 3600n models. We have been having some trouble with their drivers recently which may be related. I have tried removing all users from the security settings on the printer share and readding them. Any ideas what would cause this and why it would be intermittant? Thanks! Sounds like DNS issue. Any errors if running nslookup command? Or this post
may help.
