    - One laptop won't connect We have four computers connecting via our Netgear router. Two are connected via cable and two laptops via wireless. Now one of the will connect to the home network (in that I can access the shared files on the other pcs etc) but won?t connect to the internet. I?ve checked and triple checked the settings and they seem fine. I gave up and set up a new wireless network and the other laptop connected without any problems at all but again this one just won?t.     - Can I connect a wireless router to an existing 8 port switch? I have to do work in a doctor's office. He has DSL going to an 8 port Netgear switch. All switches are being used. He needs to share a printer with 3 computers. He doesn't mind wired or wireless but since all ports on the switch are being used, then we are leaning towards wireless but don't know how to do that since we don't have a wireless router, becuase it's wired.     - A public Wi-Fi enigma A strange thing sometimes happens when I use the free Wi-Fi at the local public library :- Internet Explorer and Firefox will often stop connecting and display the respective <web-page not found> error messages. Outlook Express also says <the server could not be found>. The issue resolves itself within a few minutes. Other users have this problem too, so there is nothing wrong with my laptop. However, during all such interruptions, uTorrent would keep working merrily as if nothing has happened. What is its secret? Is it related to Windows XP, or the wireless network set-up at the library?     - Home Networking setup problems I have three computers, one with xp pro, another has win 2000 and the third is a MacMini wireless. I connect these computers via an Apple Base Station Extreame. Here is my problem. I can see all three computers from the Windows 2000 machine but I can not see any other machine from the xp pro system. I get a message : "Workgroup is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator for this server to find out if you have access permission ... ." Well, I am the user and also the Administrator.     - Wireless on a MacBook running XP I have a couple of Macs that run Windows XP. Everything runs fine with them except I cannot connect to my secured wireless network. The network is secured with WPA2 and MAC authentication. When I attempt to connect tthe the network I get a message that says the network cannot be reached or is out of range. If I create the network connection manually I am not able to connect at all. Is this a Windows XP issue or a Macintosh running XP issue? I'm occasionally getting messages in WinXP Pro that Windows is increasing the size of virtual memory... but my system has 2Gig of RAM, and every time I get this message I see that I have about 1.3Gig of RAM available (according to Sysinternals Process Explorer). I need to display standard dialogbox - "Select Users or Groups" to choose a user account (usually domain user account, but not always - local user accounts could be used too). So, user should choose a user account and click [OK] then my application saves name (or SID) of selected user account in remote database. Selected user account here is not related to any object in Windows (like file or anything also), it is just a user account to be enabled to login to a system (not Windows). In other words - want to make Windows users login to non-Windows system. Idea is - administrator selects a number of user accounts enabled to login to a system (non- Windows), these user accounts saved in database, then (when login) users submit own account name to a system, it makes select from db and see if this account enabled to login... Everithing is working ok, expect selecting user account, I want to display standard dialogbox but dunno how to do this... I dig out MSDN but unfortunately have not found any such API. :-( I'm trying to experimenting with EditSecurity function from AclUI.dll but seems it is quite complex and I'm not sure if it will really display the dialogbox I need?     - Workgroup Setup I want to do the following; 1 workstation containing 2 NIC's, I realize that I have to setup 1 card with an static IP address, have this computer access the internet via 1 card and the other card access the workgroup. All workgroup computers shall access the internet via the computer that has the 2 cards. My question is do I need a firewall on all workgroup computers or just the one that access the internet directly? I will have anti-virus on all PC's.     - Can not figure out...... Have been using a dial up for many year. XP with 3com megahertz Lan + 56K Ethernet interface. Everything has been running fine. Until I recently installed a new driver for my Atheros wifi adapter. Since then I can not get my 3Com to work. Check the device manager which says everthing is fine and working. When I try to use system network page show connecting.... but it just times out. Have another disk I can put in and it works. Any ideas would be appreciated.     - Setting program for internet access At one time I had set up which type of internet access I wanted windows to use if a program called for internet access. At the time I only had a dial up access through AOL. I now have a DSL access and want to change that preference to use dial up only as a last resort. I do not remember where that preference was located and my computer still trys to call up AOL if a program I am using requires internet access.     - cannot ping internet but http ok hi, after a virus removal, my system has ping problems. I can browse the web via firefox but not via IE. I can ping the intranet but not the internet. pinging the internet doesn't work with plain name nor with numbers. using nmap I can scan port on ip addresse on the internet (it tells me to use the -PN option as ping doesn't respond) I have disabled the xp firewall, the other computers on the same network are working fine. and this laptop has the same problem on other network too. the problem is really inside this laptop and not on the router.     - One WIN XP compuer can't connect with RDC Hi, Hope some one can advise {RDC = Remote desktop connection.} I have 3 computers (winxp-pro SP2 all up to date) on my network. I have selected Allow RDC on all of them. I have checked that they all have the same services running/ settings ( although they also have different software installed on each unit as well). They are all connected to the same router. All have simple file sharing set up and all have passwords required to log in to each account. All accounts are administrator level accounts AND I have added the administrator accounts to the remote users group anyway ( although I believe that is not needed..) Now Unit A can "see" B & C ( Gets an active RDC connection and all goes as expected) and B can access C; C can access B as above BUT neither B or C can access A via RDC The error message is - "can not connect to the remote computer" ( tried both name and LAN ip address) Nothing in the event log of A There is no problem accessing shard folders b/w any of the computers including B access A for example. This problem seems exclusive to RDC. I have tried :- disabling anti virus AND firewall and windows defender and spybot etc etc etc on A - then I even uninstalled the Antivirus! No difference Started A in Safe mode with networking - got a "you were disconnected from the remote computer" error - before I even saw a connection had been achieved. Progress I guess but what? I guess I may have missed something obvious - but what?? PLEASE this is kinda driving me nuts :-) Short of reinstalling WIN xp - and the massive amount of software associated..... where too?     - LAN connection not being made on boot Running XP Pro SP1 on my desktop PC for 3 yrs or so, using a BT (UK) router as my gateway. Suddenly whenever I boot the PC it no longer sees the gateway and ping doesn't work - doesn't even see itself any more. I have found that the only workaround is to use the Network Setup Wizard to create a new connection, which shows up as a Bridged Connection. If I then delete that, the ordinary LAN connection works absolutely fine! (Until I shut down, in which case I have to go through the same procedure). Why isn't the normal LAN connection extablishing itself properly any more? BTW I have two laptops both of which are still talking to the router fine, so it doesn't seem to be an issue with the router (and anyway I have power-cycled that several times to no avail).     - File & Print Sharing via Wireless Access Point Hi, A little background. I have 1 PC (XP PRo SP2) connected via ethernet to a Netgear DG834GT adls/ router. I also have 2 laptops (1 XP Pro SP2 and 1 Vista HP) connected wirelessly. I also have a canon printer attached via USB to the PC. This set up works fine, internet, file and print sharing...everything. Because of inconsistent signal strength I introduced a BT Home Hub (HH) as a wireless access point (not connected to the telephone). I now connect the two laptops to the HH and the HH links wirelessly to the Netgear. I have got internet access for both laptops but can find no way of getting file and print sharing to working between the laptops and the PC. The netgear settings are: IP 192.168.0.1 Subnet 255.255.255.0 DHCP server on IP range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.253 Channel 11 Uses WEP encryption WDS mode enabled for wireless repeater mode bridging The HH settings are IP 192.168.254 Subnet 255.255.255.0 DHCP server is off IP range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.253 Channel 11 WDS mode enabled Firewall off On the Netgear I can see the HH and laptops are "attached devices" The two laptops can see each other, but can't see the PC The PC can't see either of the laptops No settings on the laptops have been changed All computers are part of the same MSHOME workgroup The printer is set to be shared There are folders on all computers that are shared Whatever I try just doesn't fix the problem. I keep thinking it's either the HH is not passing the network requests through (but as the firewall is off everything should be going through fine), or there is something within the Netgear that is causing the problem, but as the laptops worked fine when connected to it, I can't think what it would be. I'm totally confused. This is driving me absolutely nuts, so before I go insane could anyone of you very kind people offer any suggestions or advice please.     - DHCP Client Have Windows XP SP2 with all the avaliable updates (critical and optional) installed. My laptop connected to a Windows SBS 2003 network with DHCP server at work and gets the IP address of 192.168.0.56 I take it home and plug it into home network, which also uses DHCP, and I get a new IP address 192.168.0.102. However, when I bring it back (shutdown and start) to the office and connect it to the network, I logon to my laptop and it takes forever to load my personal settings (10 minutes) and I do not have a roaming profile setup. Not only that, I cannot access the network or internet. as it turns out, the IP address from my home network is not being released and I am not able get get an ip address from my server at work. Once I performed ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew, then I am able to get the new IP and can access my network. I had this laptop setup as computer name ABC at one point. Then I formatted it and reinstalled everything and called it XYZ. Don't think this has anything to do with it. What is causing this problem and what is the solutions? I am having a problem with a simple XP pro (SP2)system (server) when I set the printer to share over the network on the client machine I can see the server but the printer share does not show up! when I try to add a network printer. If i type in the path to the printer ie:\\server\lexmarkE the client computer replies with a logon asking the username and password.     - net use /persistent does not work anymore Hi, I used a mapping of the lpt2: port from a workgroup member computer with XP Home to a share of a domain member computer with XP Professional for a long time and it worked without problems. Now I had to replace this XP Professional computer by a Vista Professional computer. I used the same net use command and, as long as I don't restart the XP Home computer, the mapping works and I can print. This shows that there is no general problem with the Vista computer. The problem comes when I restart the XP Home computer. After restart a net use command on the XP Home computer shows me the mapped port, but with a "not available" in front of the line. Note that the "not available" is translated by me from the german version (the string there is exactly "Nicht verfgb") and may not match the string of the english version exactly. In order to narrow the problem I mapped a drive share on the Vista computer with net use * \\VistaComputer\share /savecred /persistent:yes on the XP Home computer and a second drive share on a NT computer with the same command. Note that I have to include credentials because the XP Home computer is not a member of the domain of the other two computers (XP Home computers cannot become domain members). Both shares are available after the net use command finished. After a restart net use shows me both shares but again with "Nicht verfgb" ("not available"). Although the first impression was that the Vista computer may be a problem the second test shows that something must have changed on the XP Home computer at the same time as I replaced the old XP Professional computer by the Vista Professional computer. It seems that the XP Home computer cannot either store the credentials or login to the domain during startup anymore. It would help me if somebody can explain where a persistent connection is stored in XP Home and how I can log the connection attempt. Now I made a recovery so that I have a really clean XP Home system now. Device manager is OK, no warnings or errors, system event log is OK, no warnings or errors, sfc /scannow completes without prompts for the setup CD. But a logged startup shows not loaded drivers.     - "Log On" required? My wife's new computer is visible in the "View Workgroup PC's" (but not My Network) but when I click it I get a "Log-On" window. That PC is not password protected, it just comes on when you start. It has no firewall, (XP SP1) I tried leaving it blank, no luck.     - Can't Map a drive after VPN'd in Hello Guru's I am having a problem using the CMAK tool and mapping network drives. I want a one click fits all for my VPN users. A file I can send them without having to walk them through an install and setting up tedious stuff like map network drives. I want the CMAK to do it for them. I am having a problem setting this up. I have hit some problems having the mapped network drive function and some general network connectivity. Ideally what I ultimately want to have happen is the CMAk tool auto map a network drive right after the connection is established. With some users I may also want a routing table update. So what I currently have is the CMAK tool logging in successfully then I have a script set to run on "Post-Connection". Here is the script, a simple batch file. net use m: "\\172.16.0.100\Company Files" Now when the script runs it says the network path is invalid. Even though you can browse to it with the same path. Also I originally wanted people to connect to the shares via the Ethernet interface 172.16.0.2. It won't let me do that and says that the path is not found, even though you can ping it after the VPN has been established. It only lets you open a network share via the PPP interface, 172.16.0.100. Seems dumb to me. Any how back to the point, when the script runs Post Connection it says network path not found. If you wait however like 15 seconds and manually run the command it works. My question is, why won't it work right after the VPN is established like CMAK is suppose to do? Also Why cant I map a network drive to 172.16.0.2, why only the PPP interface?     - Computer on Network Can't See Itself I have two computers on my Windows XP Home network. One is a desktop computer, which is connected by Ethernet cable to my DSL modem/router. The other computer is a laptop computer, which has a wireless adapter. For several years, I have been able to share files between the two computers. Now, however, when I go to My Network Places / Microsoft Windows Networks and select my network name, I cannot see the laptop computer from either the desktop computer or the laptop computer itself. However, from both computers, I can see the desktop computer in the network, and I can share the desktop computer's files. Internet access from the laptop computer is fine, and both computers respond to pings from the other. My wireless router sees the name of my laptop computer. I tried turning the Windows XP firewall off on both computers, but the problem persists. I am not running any other firewall software. I have run the Network Setup Wizard several times on each computer, and file sharing is still enabled for my folders on the laptop computer.     - Download crashes I run XP SP2, wireless connecction via Belkin adapter/extender to Belkin router. After having problems with the connection, it seems to be sorted after repairing Windows and re-installing Belkin software. I also run Norton Systemworks Now downloads, incl Norton and MS updates, start off fine and then crash after quickly decreasing download times. I have tried to repair XP, Belkin re-install , and new network connections. I have tried the Firewall/Anti-virus on/off. I have put in the IP address manually as well as auto. I have tried Dial-a-Fix, System Mechanic, and a Winsock repair. Emails seem to download ok but webpages and updates slow the system to a crash. I did manage up update Ad-Aware, which found 3 minor bits, but nothing serious. The same with Defender tho I was unable to update its definitions. Oddly, I found that Ad-Aware, Defender and even Wireless Services disabled themselves, tho I could put them back to Auto. What do I have left to do other that an XP clean re-install?     - mapped drive problems i have written the following into a shortcut for the program to open from the mapped drive in shortcut properties c:\premier9\myobp.exe m:\Clearwtr.myo where c:\ is the workstation's hard drive, and m:\Clearwtr.myo is the name of the data file and the letter name of the mapped drive. Start in: c:\Premier9 I also placed a script in users start folder: net use M: \\computername \data /y But when i open the programs shortcut it does not open the mapped drive and I need to search for it.     - Help with XP networking I am trying to get a small peer-to- peer network set up for file sharing. I can get everything working with the ipx/spx protocol but not with tcp/ip. There are 4 Windows XP Pro computers connected through a Lynksys router and a DSL modem that connect to the Internet fine. Someone previously installed Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and this may be what is preventing the computers from connecting to folders on other computers and even seeing themselves in 'My Network Places'. I ran the XP Networking Wizard but it keeps saying that I am connecting through ICS no matter what I select. I have tried stopping/disabling the Firewall/ICS service but this doesn't change anything. The DSL modem apparently requires a username and password but when I try setting up a new manual connection this way I can't even connect to the Internet. How do I uninstall ICS? Could the problem be the Internet Gateway software? Do I need ICS for some reason even though there is a router? I have never worked with ICS or networking DSL before so I feel a little lost.     - Downloading wallpaper/backgrounds Hey all - We are on a domain with user profiles. The student user profile is restricted from changing the background on the desktop with the typical right click of the mouse and clicking on properties. However, if they go to a web site that has downloadable backgrounds/wallpaper they can download a background and save it to the desktop. Of course, if I log onto the machine with the student ID I can't change the background to change it back to the default. If I log on as administrator the desktop is the default and doesn't have the picture that was downloaded. How do I find out what type of file extension the downloaded background has?     - Windows Crash - Network issue Hi, we have a PC which has two hard drives in it C: which is designed local drive and contains the Windows Installation system folder; and Drive F which is the network shared drive which is accessed by two other computers./ The Windows installation got corrupted, and we have to do a clean reinstall.     - XP Host - Vista Client On Adhoc Network Hello, I have a problem and I really don't understand where is the problem. I have 2 laptops (wifi ready). The server is XP SP2, the client Vista Home Premium. the XP is wired connected to internet and I intend to connect Vista to internet through XP using an ad-hoc network. After I created the ad-hoc network on XP, in the list of available wireless networks i found my ad-hoc network. Vista can see the SSID (with WEP) too, but... and I try to connect from Vista to XP is not working at all! The set the 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 ip on the xp's wireless adapter, and 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0 on the vista's wireless adapter; the ICS is enabled, firewall disabled, Norton Secutity uninstalled, same workgroup and so on... My question is: Where is the problem? On XP - is not capable to accept connections? Vista is not capable to connect at an ad-hoc network? On XP in event viewer I found "Association status : Fail 0x00038002" and 0x00028002 Can somebody tells me what I have to do to solve that problem?     - Dell Laptop Network issue I have a Dell B120 Laptop. It was plugged into the wall and DSL internet during a thunderstorm. I heard a pop and now cannot connect to the internet. The laptop still recognizes the card but when a cable is installed it still states a cable is unplugged. Is the card bad?     - Lost My Shared Folders I have a small home network, and I had a network shared folder on the desktop, and mapped to that folder on my laptops. All was working great, until a couple of days ago.     - Linksys router, 2 Desktops, Win 2000 and XP Network Issue Hello, I have a Linksys Router 4 ports in the back with one Desktop witn Win2000 and another one with Win XP Home. What i'm trying to do is create a network where the two computers can share one folder. Now i have both computers on the same workgroup! They both are assigned an IP automatically and one is 192.168.1.100 (win2000) and XP one is 192.168.1.101. With the Win2000 i can ping it self but i cannot ping the XP computer. With the XP computer i can Ping the Win 2000 computer, but i cannot ping that computer at all! Both Firewalls are turned OFF, no antivirus software ON on XP or win2000. with Win 2000 i can see the Entire Network and see my workgroup and both computers. I can access the Win2000 computer, but i cannot access the XP one. Weird part is if i take my Laptop that has Win Xp Pro on it, and i use a crossover cable to connect from laptop to win2000, sharing and everything works effortlessly and also when i connect my laptop to XP sharing and everything works.     - Frequent time-outs (?) on library Wi-Fi On the free wi-fi connection at the library I often get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". AFAICT nothing wrong either with my laptop or any website - but probably because the routers seem to have very large latencies as somebody mentioned - some others have this problem too. This happens at random for any website. Refreshing the page mostly gets everything working again. I do not have this problem using free wi-fi at other locations. Is there some setting in the registry that will increase the time-out period? And/or what other factors do I need to look into? Regards and thanks for any insights.     - Offline files and old servers This is most frustrating and if somebody knows the solution, i would greatly appreciate it. Mobile users use offline files for their redirected "My Documents" I have decommissioned some servers and no matter what I do, offline files still remembers those servers and tries to sync with them. I have: Deleted the Offline cache, rebooted.....no good. Deleted offline cache, turned off offline files, rebooted, re-enabled offline files....no good Deleted offline cache, turned off offline files, rebooted, located the references to the old server in the registry, reboot, turned offline back on....no good This is especially frustrating when a user changes office locations and attempts to sync across the WAN. I am in the process of moving user folders to a DFS share, but the damn thing will still try and sync with the original server as well as the DFS share. I am about to use one of my free Professional support incident with Microsoft from my Technet Subscription and make Bill solve this. Check your Local Security Policy, on the computer with the CD-ROM in question.
Security Options - Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access.
