    - setup a different shared folders HI, I have a network with Windows XP on all PC's: I have a server (machine name HPserver) logged on with user account called 'admin' with which I have 3 folder shares: general main costs the other machines are Machine name PC1 > logged on as richard (no password) Machine name PC2 > logged on as mark (no password) Machine name PC3 > logged on as sarah (no password) Machine name PC4 > logged on as general (no password) what I'm trying to do is allow: everyone to access 'general' only richard and mark to share 'costs' sarah, richard and mark to share 'main' do I need to create a user on the 'hpserver' for richard/mark/sarah & general? and do I need to create a user account 'admin' on each of the other pc's?     - Can Ping but ... Hi All, I have a network which consists of a server 2003 and 3 client laptops. I am unable to RDP into the server using one of my laptops although i am able to ping the server which has a static IP address of 192.168.1.106. I have checked the RDP connection etc on the server and it is setup to accept incoming client machines etc. I used to be able to RDP using the said laptop but unsure why suddenly it wont allow me to connect.     - Can't see my laptop (Vista) from desktop (XP) I have set up my home network using wireless router. My laptop (Vista) sees all the files I've designated as "Shared" on my desktop pc (XP). However, When I'm on my desktop pc (XP) I CANNOT see any sign of my laptop (Vista) on the network. I've checked firewall restrictions and read several ms articles but I CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM!!!     - Permanently Hiding the "Wireless No Connection" Icon in System Tra I am running XP SP3 on a Dell laptop with wired and wireless nextwork controllers installed. I have noticed that the Hiding Icons feature on the Customize Notifications dialog (Toolbar Properties | Customize) works differently for wired connection then it does for Wireless connection. Example: My LAN properties (Control Panel | Network Connections | Local Area Network | Properties) have the following settings: * Show icon in notification area when connected (deselected) * Notify me when this connection has no connectivity (deselected) Behavior: When the wired connection is connected or disconnected, no icon appears in the System Tray (as expected). My Wireless properties (Control Panel | Network Connections | Local Area Network | Properties) have the following settings: * Show icon in notification area when connected (deselected) * Notify me when this connection has no connectivity (deselected) Behavior: When the wireless connection is disconnected, the icon appears in the System Tray (NOT as expected). In addition, I have selected "Always Hide" for the "Wireless - Not Connected" icon on the Customize Notifications dialog (Toolbar Properties | Customize). Question: How can I permanently hide (not disable) the "Wireless No Connection" Icon in System Tray? I can make a registry entry to disable the both wire and wireless icons permanantely (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7007ACCF-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E} ). However, the wireless icon is useful when connecting to a wireless network and I would like it to behave like the Wired icon by conforming to the settings in the Customize Notifications dialog and the Wireless properties dialog.     - Peer to peer This shouldn't be so difficult! I recently got a new desktop. Rather than spend the hours re-installing everything, I'd like to run from the new computer, but have access to everything on the old one. Not sure if I can literally run apps installed on the old computer by clicking a desktop icon on the new computer, but at least I need to be able to share files. I plugged a network cable into each desktop. Ran Network Setup Wizard on the new computer, created a network setup disk on a flash drive, ran the network setup file on the old computer. Initially the new computer could see the old computer, but I was unable to expand the "plus sign" to view the list of shared drives and got the not available you may not have authority to access message.     - XP Pro and 12 users We have a network with 13 computers on it. Most are Windows 200 Pro SP4, there are three running Win XP Pro SP2. We have a file share on the XP Pro box, and for quite a while have been able to have all 12 systems access the share. A piece of software running locally on each machine accesses the data on the shared drive. Until recently, all is well. Now, the user limit seems to come into play, as we get one machine that cannot connect. Reviewing KB307874 says we can only have 10 users connect, but we have been using 12 for well over five years. I am confused why one would be an issue, seems two would be having a problem. Looking for some initial insight into this...the timeline is what is confusing me. Shared system is XP Pro, two others are XP Pro SP2 as SP3 was just released and none of those patches have been put in, and the remaining systems are Win2000 SP4.     - Could Connect To My Other PCs - Not Anymore I have 8 PCs on my Network and used to be able to connect to them just fine. I just installed SP3 and now can only connect to 2 PCs - the server PC and my son who is running Vista Ultimate (non-SP1). Everyone else can connect to my PC but I can't connect to theirs. Should I un-install SP3 and go back to SP2---or am I missing something else? All the device drivers are working fine. No errors...in fact, SP3 makes my PC fly!     - Printer Sharing Problem with Spousal Implications--Help I have been completely unable to connect my wife's new Vista laptop to a shared printer connected to an XP desktop. Because my XP laptop works flawlessly with the shared printer she thinks I'm just not trying hard enough. I need help. More complete information follows: Both XP machines have SP 2. All machines have automatic updates applied. Printer is an Okidata C5150 color laser printer hosted via USB to a computer I'll call PrinterHostXP, an older Dell Dimension. Printer is shared and there is one shared folder on this computer. PrinterHostXP is an older computer and uses a USB 1 port. My laptop, which I'll call MyLapTopXP is a 2 year old Presario. It has never had any trouble connecting to the printer or the shared folder on PrinterHostXP. Wife's laptop, which I'll call WifeLapTopVista is a brand new Toshiba with Vista Home Premium. This machine can see the shared printer and folder on PrinterHostXP and can edit files in the folder. I can connect this computer to the shared printer through a number of strategies (detailed below) but whenever I attempt to print I get one of two results, depending on how the printer was connected. 1. If I added the printer to WifeLapTopVista as a shared network printer I receive d message saying "Could not connect to shared printer on server". 2. If I added the printer to WifeLapTopVista as a local printer on a TCP/IP port the document will spool locally but after 10 seconds or so the document shows "Error" next to the file name in the print queue with no other information. Regardless of approach the document never appears in the printe queue on PrinterHostXP. I have installed and uninstalled the printer on WifeLapTopVista in the following ways: 1. Using the Oki software installation and navigating across the network to identify the printer. 2. By using the Add New Printer dialog in Vista and selecting a Networked printer. The network sees the printer with no trouble. If I have uninstalled the printer drivers I use the "Have disk" option to install the drivers and have used both the original distribution disk and the latest Oki download version. If I have not uninstalled the drivers, connecting the networked printer recognizes the printer type and uses the correct driver from the last driver install. 3. By using the Add New Printer dialog in Vista and selecting a local printer and then adding a TCP/IP port. In this approach the setup also detected the printer type and used the proper drivers. In addition, I moved the printer to MyLapTopXP, shared it, and connected to it from WifeLapTopVista with the same results--successful connection resulting in the printer appearing in the installed printers folder but the same error dialog when attempting to print. I can connect the printer directly to WifeLapTopVista via USB and it works flawlessly. Okidata has not fielded a Vista driver yet and advises using the XP driver. Any help will be deeply appreciated.     - Lost wireless network connection on laptop My son had his Dell laptop at college and was using their wireless network successfully. He came home last week and tried using his laptop on our home wireless network (w/Linksys router). He said he was not able to always connect so he tried to set up (configure, repair) the wireless connection himself (always a dangerous thing to do). Now he gets no internet at all (IE always goes into 'offline' mode). I've tried to trouble shoot the connection but so far I have been unsuccessful. The laptop can see the wireless network (it shows as available and connected). There is something wrong with the network connection that IE uses but I don't know how to go about fixing it. In the laptop's Network Connections I see 'Lan or High-Speed Connections' with a 'Wireless Network Connection' of connected,firewalled. Also, in the configuration area under connection properties there is (checked) Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing, QoS Packet Scheduler, and TCP/IP. There are other services unchecked such as Client Service for Netware, NW Link IPX/SPX, NW Link Net Bios, AEGIS Protocol, WLAN Trans...     - One computer in peer to peer no longer seeing other computers or being seen I set up a friends peer-to-peer network a few years ago. everything has been working well until recently (an he claims nothing has changed on any machines, ha!). All 4 computers are WinXP SP2. Every computer is seeing all the other computers on the network shared folders & printers. Recently the laptop does not see the other computers and the other computers "see" the laptop but can't connect to it. The laptop does still connect to the internet The laptop can ping the other computers successfully All computers are part of the same workgroup and on the same subnet No viruses or spyware detected on any systems AV and (Windows) firewall have been disabled for testing purposes No other 3rd party firewalls are installed File & Printer sharing is enabled on all computers I do see the laptop listed in the other computers Network Neighborhoods, but get the following message when trying to connect "\\Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The network path was not found" No computers are listed in the network neighborhood of the laptop (including the laptop). If I try to search for a computer nothing is found.     - Networking computers I have a Microsoft MN 700 wireless router that has four computers and a printer connected to it wirelessly. All of the computers are using MS windows XP SP2 and all are on the same workgroup. Each can see each other, share folders and files and each can connect to the internet through the MN 700 wireless router. The router manages all of the IP addresses on this local net within the range of 192.168.2.1 - 254 through its DCHP server. I tried to hook up one of these computers through a wired ethernet connection to the router (the router can accept up to 4 wired connections). I disabled the wireless conncetion between the router and the computer so there would only be a wired connection. When the cable is connected between the router and the computer, the corresponding light on the router lights up and the computer icon for the connection is visible in the system tray on the computer, so the physical connection is there. After doing this and re-booting both the computer and router, I was expecting to be able to connect to the internet, but I could not. I could not see the other computers on my workgroup either. I tried to ping the router from the wired computer, but got the message that a link was not achievable. The IP address of the computer also changed from 192.168.2.103 to 169.254.190.34. I tried to renew the address, but got the message "No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection 2 while it has is media disconnected." For some reason the process is only looking at the wireless connection (which I disabled) and doesn't look at the wired connection. Why is that and how do I get it to accept a wired connection between the router and computer?     - WiFi "Limited or no connectivity" issues (XPSP2) As I understand it, the "Connected" but "Limited or no connectivity" status is active when there _is _an established "physical" connection between the computer and the router - but _before_ the WPA-key has been sent (or acknowledged?). When I shutdown the system it issues Info Msg 4201 "The system detected that network adapter xxx was connected to the network and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter". It is stated elsewhere that the msg is issued when the adapter is "enabled _or_disabled" which indicates that "normal operation" should be understood as "no operation" in this case. This is confusing, at least ;-) Upon startup the same infoMsg is issued twice, 45 seconds apart, but the internet connection does not get up. And concurrent with the second message, a warning 1003 is issued. "Your computer was not able to renew its adress from the network... cancelled by the user... will continue to try" BUT, a) it has a fixed adress already (so it should not be renewed in the first place), b) the user (me) has not interferred in any way (so, what user was that, actually). 43 seconds later it makes another try, which results in Warning 1008, with similar content asbefore "Your computer was not able... semaphore timeout... willl continue to try". 3 second later Dhcp has obviously given up getting the adress over the network and assigned it an entirely new adress of 169.254.75.111 (despite the fixed one, which is different). So now the computer is "Connected" but with "...no connectivity" and the wrong IP adress. I have to resolve this situation by manually disconnecting, and then reconnect again. Upon reconnect the WPA-key is being shown to me (in a sense, because only stars are shown ;-) which I then "OK" and send to the router. After that the link is up. I _assume_ that the problem is that the WPA-key is not sent (or acknowledged) as it should on the automatic connection tries during the boot sequence. So my big question is: Q1: What can I do to make the system establish the fully "connected" connection by itself during the boot. Curiosity questions are e.g... Q2: Isn't there some logical error when the "connected but not connected" state makes the system forget that the IP adress is fixed and should not be retrieved from the network. Q3: Is it really proper to issue a msg stating that the adapter "was connected to the network" and that the system has "initiated normal operation" when in fact the adapter has been disconnected from the network because it was disabled because of the shutdown. Q4:Why can't the system on its own identify this "connected but not connected" situation and re-establish the connection automatically, whithout my intervention? I should stress that this computer has a WiFi network connection only. It does have an Ethernet cable adapter too, but no cable is connected to it and the system makes no attempts to use it (at least none that makes a trace in the event log).     - Network issue I have a wireless laptop on windows Home XP. At one time I was able to connect to my home network, but cant now. My experts say it 's now XP is corrupted and needs to be installed. My network can see the laptop but the laptop cant see the network. The laptop is wireless and even when I connect with a cable it doenst see the network.     - Help installing wireless routers Hi, I have been using the following setup for a couple of years now without any trouble. Netgear WGT624 V2 (Wireless) IN WLAN Cable modem OUT LAN to XP box OUT LAN to wired hub (see below) OUT to VOIP MODEM (Engin) WIRED LINKSYS 10/100 16 port IN FROM Netgear above OUT LAN to other XP boxes I also have a Compex Netpassage 16 which has wireless and 4 hard ports. I want to be able to use my laptop wireless which is quite away from the Netgear wireless but close enough to one of the XP boxes (say box 2) which is fed from the wired hub. What is my best way to do this? Can I feed the cable from box 2 into the Compex then out of the compex to the wired hub? Would I then be able to get a signal from my LAN to the laptop?     - Can't connect using Remote Desktop I am having a problem connecting to my home computer from my laptop using remote desktop. I have a Linksys wireless router with the desktop connected to the router and the laptop connected wirelessly.     - Bizarre wireless network config issues I use Windows zero-config for my wireless network access. I have a D- Link DWL-G650 card (b/g). At home I regularly connect using wireless. That's how I work most of the time. Two days ago I took my car in for service at a dealer and tried to use their wiFi access point. Whatever I did, the network would not show up in the "View Available Networks" window. I spent the entire 3 hours trying to resolve this issue. Then I went home and reconnected to my default network at home, where I worked fine for the next two days. This afternoon, I took my laptop to my daughter's music studio. When I opened the WiFi "View Available Networks" panel here, it showed a list including all the wiFi networks I couldn't see at the dealer!!! WTF??     - Resolving MAC Address to Hostname Is there a command-line command to resolve the MAC address of a device to it's hostname? I'm getting a conflict that show's the MAC address of the other machine, but when I try to trace it by physically tracing the cable connected to the switch, I can't find where it goes.     - Help - Generic host process needs to close Using Win XP Home Edition SP1. Every time I go online via ADSL broadband I get at least one "Generic Host Process .........and needs to close". The Event log has nothing in the App or the module entries. The error occurs usually during the first five minutes of online time. I have found that the controlling Windows process allows me about 30 secs to write my last will and testament before pulling out the rug. Also found (reboots were hugely annoying) that if I can log-off and close just AOL BEFORE about 30 secs, and then click the "Don't Send" option on the warning window, all I have to do to recover is restart AOL thus avoiding a cold restart. As for what changed, well AOL changed the broadband setup to something called "DialBB" (and told us they were doing it) but their help service doesn't seem to know what's going on my end.     - extra connectivity icon in system tray yesterday, an extra connectivity icon appeared in my system tray. It doesn't light up indicating activity and I have checked my network connections in control panel and no new ones are reported. I thought it was a fluke that happened when everything loaded, but after rebooting, it is still there today. When I mouse over it, it doesn't provide a bubble explaining what it is, and if I go into taskbar properties, it isn't presenting there. I haven't installed any new software. How do I fix this?     - "Limited or no connectivity" problem Win XP Home, dLink cable modem and dLink wireless router. Dell desktop connected via Ethernet to router. One other machine connected via wireless. That machine works fine. This problem just started last week on the wired desktop. All of a sudden, I'm seeing a "Limited or no connectivity" error message on the system tray. If I plug the desktop cable directly into the cable modem, it acquires an IP address as well as DNS info, and connects to the internet normally. The desktop IP properties are set to acquire an IP address automatically, and this is working when connected to the cable modem. Other things I've tried: 1. For testing, I connected a laptop to the router via the same Ethernet cable the desktop was using. The laptop works fine this way, as it does with a wireless connection. 2. I've tried swapping cables. I don't see anything blocked on the router. 3. I've powered down the modem, router, and desktop several times. 4. I don't see any odd settings on the router. 5. I've looked at other threads. One mentioned the "Limited or no connectivity" problem, but said rebooting the router fixed it. It didn't for me. Also, since a laptop will work correctly on a wired connection to this router, I think that means the router is ok. 6. I've seen this problem reported elsewhere, but those reports refer to a problem when SP2 was first installed. This doesn't apply here. Also, as I said, the problem is only with connecting to the router, not to the cable modem. 7. AVG 8 was running on this desktop when this started. I uninstalled AVG and installed the free McAfee from Comcast. This made no difference, as I expected since the Ethernet connection worked normally when directly connected to the cable modem.. Similarly, I've tried with Windows Firewall enabled and disabled. 8. One thing I did not try was giving the desktop a fixed IP address. At the time of my testing the problem, it was the only PC connected directly or by wireless, so there shouldn't have been any address conflict. 9. I did not notice if SP3 had recently been installed. (This is a friend's home network.) But again, the reported SP problem would block any Ethernet connection, not just one to a router. I'm baffled by this inconsistent behavior. Any suggestions? How can I get back to my old situation and remove this connection sharing? -> rightmouse menu gives 'remove' but it is grayed out. A little additional info: - I run XP prof. SP3. - I have Windows Firewall disabled (In favor of McAfee firewall) - If I disable my normal LAN connection, the connection sharing disappears.     - User wont auto login to mapped drives I just built a new computer with a fresh install of XP. I've been able to setup everything just fine except the mapped network drives. The first user I made works perfectly because every time that user logs in it will automatically connect to the drives and login. Other users will only connect but still require username and password Even if I *copy* that user account that works fine or try to make a new user account (recreate the mapped drives and setup the user/pass and option to automatically reconnect) none of them will automatically login. It's frustrating because I created the first user that will automatically log in just fine and I'm not doing anything different. I started getting the response from my modem dialog, "Connected to remote computer", "Connected to remote computer" (yes twice), "Unable to establish a connection". After a re-boot of my system with a "Z" in the initialization settings for my modem I can connect ONCE. After that, I must re-boot to connect again.     - Frequent Network Drops Hi; I support a LAN with approx 25 WinXP Pro SP2 clients and 2 Windows 2003 SP2 servers. The servers are connected via GB and all workstations via 100Mbps. I have 2 Dell OptiPlex 745 XPPro SP2 machines that experience network drops quite frequently, sometimes up to 4 times/hour. They lose their connection to a mapped drive and are unable to ping either server when this happens. The connection is usually restored within about 30 seconds. I've tried different nics, updating nic drivers, swapping patch cables, changing ports on the switch, even changing the 48+2 port switch without success so far.     - Is ICS my only option ? Dear network experts. Hopefully someone can offer some solutions. Current network - Wireless router using 172.16.0.x range for my network. I have a XP MCE pc connecting to the internet using a wireless NIC PCI card. Connected to the LAN port of this MCE pc is a Sony PS2 console and I have enabled ICS on the MCE pc. Thus the MCE's LAN port becomes 192.168.0.1 and the PS2 is set to DHCP. With this configuration I am able to play online games on my PS2 utilising the MCE wireless connection to the router. My desire is to connect a 2nd PS2 to the router and play the 2 PS2s against each other. My problem is - because the 1st PS2 is behind ICS on 192.168.0.x I can't ping it from my 172.16 network and therefore I doubt the 2 PS2s will see each other. What changes do I need to make to get the 2 PS2s talking when 1 of them is going through my XPMCE pc ? Can I simply ditch ICS and just bridge MCE's wireless and LAN ports and then set the MCE PS2 to a 172.16.0.x IP ? How is bridging different to ICS'ing ? Thankyou very much.     - Winsock Issues: Is this the appropriate place to post? DFXHHQ38 Hello, I am in desperate need of some help. I am in the UK and have recently changed my ISP from Virgin to Sky. Apart from the atrocious and pathetic service offered by Sky to me, I have discovered that my internet connectivity is down because of a Winsock error. The diagnostic program Netdiag is so unreliable that although it first notified me that the error was due to an LSP in the Winsock, it has never notified me since I deleted the Registry entry and the Program folder entry about the error ever again. Instead the Netdiag tells me that it cannot connect to the internet because the http, https and ftp ports are blocked by a firewall which is wrong because I turned the firewall off (rendering myself vulnerable) only so I could connect to the internet. After trial and error connections on many occasions I saw the Microsoft support page http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457156.aspx This advised typing â??netsh Winsock reset catalogâ?? in front of the C prompt. Although I have restarted the computer on a number of occasions, doing that has not restored connectivity even though the Winsock has been reset according to the computer. I only manage to connect to the internet by trial and error after many messages that the problem may instead be in the modem and to turn the modem off and on and then to contact my ISP which is pointless because as I mentioned above Sky broadband hardly ever respond. I tried another ISP and the computer connected without any hassle so the problem is with the ISP although I just want to make sure before I take the rogues at Sky broadband to court. Does anyone please know what to do about the Winsock error other than spending another 100/- and reinstalling windows and losing data just because Sky Broadband is a third-rate ISP?     - Access to LAN, No access to Internet I have a wired home network and DSL. DSL modem, D-Link router/hub, 4 desktop computers (2 with XP SP2 and 2 with XP SP3). Everything worked fine last night. This morning, all the computers except one work fine. The dysfunctional computer (Dell 1100 with SP3) cannot connect to the internet now, though it can still connect with the other computers on the LAN and the other computers can connect to it. This is just the opposite of any network problems I have ever experienced, since it is usually trying to connect to other computers that is problematic, not to the internet. I have checked all the connections, restarted the computer, uninstalled and reinstalled the network card driver, ran the network connection wizard again, ran LSPfix (no problems found), totally turned off all of Norton 360's firewall, autoprotect etc., and have now hooked up my laptop to the LAN cable that was running to the problem PC, and can connect to the internet just fine on it (I am on the laptop writing this now). A couple of other oddities that someone may be able to connect all the dots together and know what the problem is. I cannot access the router via Internet Explorer nor ping it from a command window from the problem PC, and even though I can access all the other PC's via Windows Explorer (I even copied files between them to make sure), I cannot ping any of them either. I tried doing a system restore to yesterday, even though I have made no changes to the system in a while now, and it failed. I believe this is due to having the Truecrypt encryption program on 2 of the 3 partitions of the hard drive, though not on C:\ where the operating system is. I think I found out a long while ago that system restores always failed when Truecrypt was encrypting any partitions on a drive at startup, even if the one the operating system was on was not. I running 3 XP Pro (SP3) computers connected to a wired router and high
speed modem.

Computer A can run a Remote Desktop connection to either computer B or C.
However, computers B or C cannot connect to computer A via Remote Desktop
but these computers are able to view the files on computer A using My
Network Places. That means they know about computer A.

Remote Desktop is enabled on computer A and the Firewall Exception is set to
allow this connection.

Computer A is a new system I built last month. This was the first time I
tried a Remote connection TO this computer and was surprised to find I
couldn't connect - I normally Remote to the other two systems from computer
A. What am I missing? After I enter the computer name (or IP address) into
the Remote and click "connect", the dialog box dims for a moment but nothing
happens.

Greatly appreciate any suggestions
