I need help to sort out a computer network. Are there any dedicated
newsgroups for contacts in PC Networks? I need someone to come into my
office. Where I live the specialist skills are hard to find.

I have now a small network of 5 computers and I get endless headaches
with stuff not working and the last "specialist" had never even heard
of .NET. Then he started saying a Web developer could configfure the
server systems.

What I need is a simple and reliable system. The technicians seem to
more interested in implementing some new whizz feature from Microsoft
which ends up stopping my whole business.

All depends where you are. I specialise in small-site support.

Sounds like you need to find a guy who knows what he's talking about, but
also someone who appreciates that a small site wants a solution of manageable
complexity.

I am in Southend on sea (UK)

Seriously I have hit a solid brick wall. Are there are web pages about
how to network? I have been losing data and having huge problems.

I need a full solution that works.

Hi
May be you should start by describing the actual problems.
It is Not clear from your posting what type of help you need.

The problems are countless. What I need is a resource on the web so I
can understand the principles of computer networks especially security
and reliability. I can then direct the work to be done. The problem I
have is that the technical people I asked about this failed to
understand the value of the computers to the business. So when things
go wrong, they fail to understand the impact. So someone who
understands that impact needs to make key decisions.

Jack, I found a site at http://www.networktutorials.info/pages/how_to_secure=
.html
which helped a lot. I do have one issue about the external firewall
for the whole network. Are there any big brands for that, and what is
better software or hardware?
The links says:
"An edge firewall in the network is a best possible security measure
to detect and eliminate the possible security breaches in the network.
A high performance router or a PC with software firewall can detect
these breaches and resolve them."

Also can you buy File servers, just for file sharing, print servers
(printer sharing) and then actual full servers with software loaded?

Ask at your local technical college or university, where I live they work
very closely with business, there's also LEDU and ILEX to help small
businesses.

Hi
Good security can be achieved of using both Hardware and Software Firewall,
http://www.ezlan.net/firewall.html
There is many more pages on http://www.ezlan.net, take a look might be that
it can help solve some of your problems.
