    - FTP fails with <filename>: Invalid Argument I am trying to use FTP to move a large (>80 GB) file to our mass storage facility here at NASA Langley. At around 45 GB I get the subject error. I found a knowledge base article that describes the problem for Win NT 4.0 and 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259837/en-us I assume that these fixes are in XP SP2. I am fully patched. So I assume I am running out of paged pool memory (I have 4 GB installed, 3GB available on an HP xw6400 with 2 Dual Xeons). The error occurred while running overnight with nothing else running. It is repeatable. The error also occurs with Filezilla, but it manages to get to > 70GB. Any ideas as to solution or work around? How do I find out how much paged pool I have?     - XP machine cannot see vista machine because of rights? I just installed a new Vista machine onto a home network with two XP machines running on them. The vista machine sees all the shared folders on the XP machines, and my XP laptop sees the shared folders and printer on the vista machine. But the XP desktop does not see the vista machine when accessing my network places. However, when I select "view workgroup computers" on the XP, the Vista machine is displayed. And when I select properties for the vista machine in that window, I get an error message that reads "You do not have the appropriate access rights for the server." So my desktop knows the vista machine is there. All the machines use PC-cillin, and have the same firewall settings. But, I did once have Norton Antivirus on the desktop, but I removed it using the Norton Removal Tool. Is there a more speciific settting I have to make in the Vista machine or the XP machine to allow the XP to access the Vista shared folders? Tag: Network name no longer available Tag: 287131

    - Windows searching for network When responding to a prompt to have Window search for wireless networks, I clicked Network Connections, clicked Properties on my Wireless icon but there was no tab for Wireless Networks on the Networks Properties screen -- only General and Advanced tabs. My other computers list a Wireless Network tab and Windows can be configured to set up the network. Why is the tab not there and how can I get it there?     - Requiring login values Hello experts, I have a simple network of 6 machines (all xp w/sp2). Machines #1 through #4 are work stations. Then I have set up 2 machines as basic file servers called FileServer1 and FileServer2. Currently, each machine can see all other machines on the network (including the 2 file servers). So, up to that point, I think I have everything running great. But, now I am stuck on how to do a few things on these machines: Firstly...how do I set it up so that work stations can "see" FileServer #2, but cannot log on to it (in other words, if they clicked on FileServer#2 in their Explorer, they would get a logon-screen). Then how do I get it set up so each workstation cannot see another.. (in other words, a workstation can only see FileServer #1, can see FileServer#2 but cannot logon (without the pswd) but can NOT see other workstations. I'm still working my way through the help files, but haven't found this yet. I'm sure it's something quite simple. But, I'm hoping you experts out there can offer some help.     - Having to replace workgroup names I have an ongoing problems with two customers sites. Both are using XP Pro and using Peer to Peer networking, they are also using "simple Files Sharing". On a regulare basis the computers cannet see each other across the network, "Unable to open files you may not be authorised", if I change the workgroup on each machine than all is O.K. for a couple of weeks of so, what am I doing wrong ??     - What does "Target" mean when network browsing? Hi All, Sometimes when I am at a customer site, I will use Windows Explorer to find various network shares. Occasionally, after clicking on the root of share, I will get an icon titled "Target". If I click on it, the share opens as normal -- no harm no foul. It doesn't hurt anything. I have had this happen on both Windows Servers and Linux Samba servers. Any idea what this benign "Target" is? I am just real curious.     - need wpa2 bridge recommendations Hi All, I am trying to connect a computer with an Ethernet port and no spare PCI slots to a small WPA2 protected wireless network. Does anyone have recommendation for a wireless bridge that supports WPA2? I had been using USR products, but had to stop using any of their products do to a hardware design defect in their eeproms circuits that kept them from saving changes. I also looked at the Linksys WET54G but no WPA2 (only wpa1). I found a ZyXel G-570S but have no experience with their reliability. Anyway, I thought it was time to ask for help.     - Can't see files from limited accounts on home network I have two computers, one running Windows XP Pro SP2 and the other Windows XP Home SP2. Each computer has user accounts named "Primary" and "Kids". The Primary accounts are administrator access and the Kids accounts are limited. The computers are set up on a basic home network, with simple file sharing enabled, and selected folders set to be shared on the network. I can access all shared folders and files from anywhere on the network, except for the files under the limited Kids user accounts. When I try to access those from anywhere, I get an "Access is Denied" message. I've read everything I can find and gone through all sorts of troubleshooting scenarios but I can't figure it out.     - Downloads just stops Hi, I have a problem that occurs every time I try to download a (installer) program over the Internet. E.g. I tried to download/install acrobat reader and Google sketch with the same behaviour. I chose to download the program and after a second a dialog appears where I press the "run" button to start the installer and the file(s) download is starting. I can se how the download proceeds sometimes I manage to download 3% and sometimes 11%. First I thought that it was the firewall. I turned it off and even uninstalled it => no change. Then I tought it was the wifi network so I use cable => no luck. I did manage to download Opera browser when I chosed a FTP site instead of HTP (I could chose a download site in a scroll menu and I used one beginning with FTP instead of HTP) I thoought that it was IE7 but I have the same problem in Opera, I cant install Sketch Up from Opera either!! By default this is set up to listen on the local subnet only. As you can see, the NetBIOS ports (137-139) are only listening on the local subnet, which is fine, but the SMB port, 445, is listening on the 0.0.0.0 subnet, which is not desirable. I, eventually, after buggering about for far too long, just changed the scope for port 445 in the firewall to "All networks" (or whatever it is) which now lets me in via SMB. For obvious security reasons I would prefer to change the listening app to listen on the local subnet ONLY. I'm currently using a wireless adapter, so I'm not overly happy with all and sundry being able to access 445. Of course, the WiFi connection is encrypted with WPA2/AES and is behind a router firewall, but still... sometimes it isn't as I move around. Googled, but no help. TIA, Ken.     - Wol question? I have 4 Windows XP Pro systems operating on a LAN. Three of these computers I start up remotely using the Run command "mc-wol Mac address". Is it possible to somehow automate this process by creating 3 seperate short cuts, one for each computer, that would simply this start up process? Suggestions greatly appreciated.     - HP printer is wireless, what can it do? The small network here has a wired Linksys router, two PC's (Win-XP-pro), one wired print server (for a laser printer w/parallel port), and an HP7410 printer (with a network interface card) that is connected by cable to the local ethernet/LAN. This HP also has a "wireless" capability, a small blue icon stays lighted on front. Would greatly appreciate some insights for these (obviously) elementary questions... a) Is the wireless feature primarily ONLY for, let's say, a laptop to print wirelessly to this HP Printer, or just to clean up wires in the office? b) Is it true it can't be BOTH connected by wire and at the same time have wireless capability? That is... since it's connected by cable (presumably the HP's wireless is presently disabled), then is it true that I'd need to first DISCONNECT it from cable, then re-configure for 'wireless' by filling in the wireless settings on HP... which would mean now ONLY the laptop can connect and the PC's can't (unless I added a wireless-access-point (WAP) to the router, so ALL PC's could sent thru wireless into the printer, right?) c) Is it true this wireless HP device only really "receives" signals (things to be printed), or is it possible (or worse, "certain") that it could be used for someone outside home to "get into" my entire network (far beyond just printing)? Is this likely? (Right now, I assume wireless is disabled...but if it isn't, I noticed some settings that said "open" "no security/authentication". But it also said "Connected: No". d) Can the HP printer act as a (and be my) WAP and eliminate the need for me to buy a separate WAP? Is this commonly done? Any advantages/disadvantages? e) Is it true that the wired connection now in use (HP is plugged into router) would almost for certain be the fastest, and that if I re-configured everything to use the HP printer's 801.11b wireless connection along with a (newly installed) 801.11 b/g WAP...the connection would likely or for sure be noticeably slower? f) Any way to keep the fast wired-connection to the HP printer, yet at same time allow it to 'accept' a wireless signal from a laptop, so that laptop can print (thru the air so to speak) to the printer?     - Cannot see wireless machines I have a small network with a Vista Ultimate machine plus a few XP Pro SP2 machines that are all connected to a router that has wireless and wired access. In all cases, I can see the wired machines from all machines, even from those connected via wireless. I cannot see the wireless machines from anywhere. My guess was that a software firewall was blocking access over that connection, but I turned everything off and it had no effect. Even thou I cannot see a wireless machine from a wired machine.     - basic need-to-know on buying/setting-up wireless Hello, Am using WinXP-pro on 2 PC's (want to do remote access later, too), got one wired-router, 2-PC's, in small 3-story house, in suburbs, not much traffic here. Trying to set up very basic wireless access (for future laptop, and small Wii in house), without spending lots of time or becoming expert, would greatly appreciate some advice in these below general areas, thanks... 1) WAP or Wireless Router? Already have a Linksys VPN router (works great, already set up, although don't use the VPN part yet). Looks like wireless access points (WAP's, $69) are MORE expensive than entirely new wireless router (sale $43). -Can/should I get the wireless ROUTER and just use it like a WAP... i.e. just use it for wireless access and skip all the router stuff. Can I do that? Is it easy to set up (just wireless, no router)? -Would I HAVE to throw out existing router and start over? -Is there some great benefit to paying extra and getting just the WAP (no built-in router) and attaching it to my router? 2) Which device? Looks like the Linksys WRT54G is good all around. It handles wireless-B too. -Is there any GREAT reason to pay much more (~$70) and get speed booster for 35% more speed. -At $43, seems I could always get a few years out of it and start over later if speed is a real issue, besides better deals/standards likely on market by then anyway, right? 3) Security... -How secure are these local wireless networks? Everyone says set up a password. Are there some basic things everybody sets up to be very secure? -Is the biggest risk a neighbor or drive-by connection? Is that really hard, or really easy? So what if they use my always-on connection, flat fee. -Or is the risk of an unauthorize sign-on that they could browse files and/or remote-control and damage my PC (a big deal). 4) Anything else in the really need to know or do category?     - MTU Problem Check this one out, hopefully someone has some ideas on this... I have a bunch of XP Pro machines in one office where I had to lower the MTU setting to 1362 to allow traffic to work across a hardware VPN to the main office. The correct MTU size was determined by finding the max size packet that worked and then subtracting 10 (so in this case, 1372 was the largest size packet that would work). Anyway, this was working fine for all of the computers for months. All of a sudden, one computer quit working and it is displaying a very strange behavior... With the 1362 MTU size set, all of a sudden the largest packet that would go through from this PC only was 1334, so I lowered the MTU down to 1324. Reboot, and then the largest packet that would go through is 1282, so I lowered the MTU to 1272 and rebooted. This goes on and on -- you enable the correct setting, reboot, and then you have to go lower again. It literally never ends. I think that the registry has been tampered with as someone had set the TCP Receive Window setting to 1100. I tried setting it back to 64512, and even reset TCP/IP back to defaults with the guided help from this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 After resetting TCP/IP, the TCP Receive Window setting is fine, but I still am running into the same MTU issue.     - File sharing I know this topic has come up repeatedly and I have tried almost everything in every article and I am stumped. Please throw some suggestions. I have three computers running windows xp pro. Computer A is the problem. Computers B and C seem to be okay. Heres what happens. B and C can see each other and do file sharing. B and C can see A, but they both get accessiblity error messages when they try to browse A. Computer A can see and read and write to B and C. Computer A has two printers that are shared, but B and C can't access them (they don't show up when I try to add a network printer) All computers are running simple file sharing behind a broadband router so they all have private IP addresses. I have tried with the windows firewall on and off. No other firewall software is being used. I have CA antivirus and antispam running, but I have uninstalled and tried. All three shared computers have simple names like "chris" or "desktop" This all used to work and that it stopped, but I'm not sure when because I don't often print or file share from computer's B and C. I have also connected other computers that I am troubleshooting for people and they also can't access computer A, but they can always see it in the workgroup computer list.     - Disappearing server shares on specific XP/Office2007 client I'm running a Windows 2000 server SP4 with all the latest fixes. This server is sharing files and printers. The clients are all Windows XP Professional SP2 (dutch language) with the applicable patches installed. The problem seems to specifically haunt laptop computers that also have the new Office 2007 (also patched to Microsoft standards) installed. The clients log in, and have normal access to all the shares on the servers. The server keeps it's shares up and running (none of the clients with desktops or even laptops with no Office 2007 installed have the issue to my knowledge), but atleast two machines somehow 'loose' the ability to review shares on the server. I do have a few more machines with the XP/Office 2007 configuration I have not heard any problems from, but then again, that might just be a matter of time. Opening the UNC path to the server yields just one or two shared folders, and the contents of these folders are usually empty. Accessing a missing share or printer through the UNC path directly gives the notification that the share cannot be found of contacted. All the printers and the rest of the shares are just gone on the workstation. Going to a different workstation shows the shares and printers to be available, so it can't be a problem on the server-side. This is further staved by the fact that as the Windows XP client that has the issue reboots, all the shares and printers are back up as normal again, as if they never were gone to begin with. It's quite annoying because it removes the ability of the user to access network items, aswell as utilize network printers. I'm a bit at a loss as to what may be causing this, and thus would like to submit this thread to see if anyone could toss up some idea's of what might be going on.     - IMPOSSIBLE Networking with XP I've got three computers hooked up to a network: First, a WinXP and a Win2000 computer both connected to the router via wired LAN. Then there's also a WinXP laptop connected via WiFi. I'm using a Linksys wireless router WRT150N. Internet access for all machines is fast and flawless. But file transfers are impossible between any of the machines, regardless of file size. I can do a directory view of any networked files, which usually gets me a few seconds delay and an hourglass, but any attempt at any file transfer gets me an hourglass that won't go away ever. Sometimes on the XP machines I'll see a frustrating crash of Windows Explorer (Win2000 never crashes, by God!). This occurs even when all firewalls are disabled. Each machine can ping the other. I don't have a clue as to what is going on here. I can browse other networked computer's files, but I can't access the files. I'm at my wits end. ANY help or debug ideas would be lovely.     - Do I need NETBIOS and the LMHOSTS file? I've got a home network, a WinXP and a Win2000 computer connected via wired LAN, and a WinXP laptop connected via WiFi. I'm using a Linksys WRT150N router. All I need are internet access for all computers (I'm using Comcast), and file/printer sharing between all computers. For all computers, in my Advanced TCP/IP Settings, do I need to have Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP? Or should it be disabled? Or use the Default option of Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server?     - Slow network traffic We are having slow network traffic on all xp-clients in our network. (2dc w2k3 - 1 exchange server - > 125 clients all windows xp pro sp 2). The 4 vista clients do not have this problem. We have tested the network speed between 2 remote locations (fiber connection) and the speed is about 95 Mbps. Anyone any idea ?     - What hardware do I need for this netork? Hi, We will have 10 XP Home PCs and a network printer at work. Currently, we just have a 6 port switch where 5 PCs connect to one that acts as the gateway for the internet and the printer. The broadband is BT Business ADSL. What I want to do is have a wireless router so our 2 laptops can connect as well. Am I right to assume that if I buy an ADSL Wireless 4 port Router, I can connect 3 PCs directly to the router and the other port can be connected to the 6 port switch? I am a bit of a novice when it comes to switches and routers. If you can recommend a plan then that would be fantastic. We want to keep costs down as well which is why we are sticking with XP Home and not getting a server. Thanks for your attention and any advice you can give me.     - How to setup home network for Windows 2000 and Windows XP? Hi, there: My home network has a wireless router, a Windows 2000 machine and a laptop running Windows XP. These machine are all configured as one workgroup. From the XP, the W2000's name is shown, but cannot be accessed, it say's cannot find the path. From the W2000, only itself's name shown, it cannot see the XP. I tried to us XP Home's CD to configue the W2000's home network, but the XP CD say's this method only for W98. To setup a home network, I setup an XP computer first (by running the network setup wizard) and then put an XP home CD to a computer running windows 2000, then the windows 2000 computer seem dead locked. IP Address 190.188.1.400 Default gateway 190.188.1.4 ROUTER The router has some settings where it has a fill-in box (default=0) to allow you to ONLY fill in the last 2 digits, like this 190.188.1.4 [ 0 ] (it has a default of 0) QUESTIONS OK so questions are...     - Remote Desktop locks up local computer I am running RDP on my local XP pro machine (box 1). I connect to it by running the remote desktop client on another XP pro machine (box 2) on my LAN. Most of the time when I log off the remote session I cannot access box 1 from the keyboard, and the screen is blank. CNTL, ATL, DEL does not return the login prompt. So far, the only solution I have been able to do is shut down the computer and restart it. Are there any suggestions I can try to correct this problem?     - Protecting shared files on XP SP2 home Well, I know it *supposedly* can't be done with a password, but I've heard of ways to do it and I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas. Basically, there's one computer I want to be able to access the files. It's OS X Tiger, and will always have the same IP address. All other computers When I mount a share, it asks for a password, but, like I believe all XP systems are, any password will open the files. So I just need anything to keep access to that one computer. I've heard about setting a password on the guest account, but that doesn't seem possible. Also tried making a rule on my router's firewall, but that didn't work. Is there any way to set up the Windows Firewall for this? Any suggestions would be appreciated!     - half bandwidth I've updated my adsl from 2Mb/s to 12Mb/s. Since that I'm experiencing some problems. I have in fact +- 1250KB/s bandwidth, tested in other PC's in the network, but on the my main PC, the Win XP only can deal with 700KB/s tested with one connection. If I use two or more silmultaneous connctions to the same file I achieve the total bandwidth. In this Pc I have also Linux installed so I tested with it and I have the total but not in Win XP.     - Network Connections dialogue box When my broadband wasn't working, I used dialup (as you do), and since broadband 's been repaired, I keep getting a 'Network Connections' window popping up when I visit certain sites - only in Firefox, strangely, asking me which dialup connection I want to connect to.
