 - Problem: Accessing RapidShare through Wireless Router Hello all ! First of all, let me say that I am not sure which newsgroup I should post this message, I am using the shotgun approach, in crossposting this message to 5 newsgroups, trying to look for the solution to solve my problem. If this is not the correct newsgroup to post my question, please accept my sincerest apology. With the above done, here's my problem. In the office we use our notebook to access the Net via WIFI. Normal web operations post no problem. We can go to any site, do anything. Satisfactory speed too. Downloading files normally don't post any problem as well. Depending on the speed originating server (where files are residing), files normally downloaded without any fuss. For large files, such as ISO files (680+ MB in size), we often use download managers to expedite the task. Again, normal file downloading posts no problem. However, whenever we try to access file-sharing servers such as RapidShare or MegaUpload or whatever, things slow down to a crawl, and sometimes downloads just DIE in the middle. Since we can't use download managers in downloading files from the likes of RapidShare, we have no control over how the file transfer process would be done. Often files would be successfully downloaded, albeit V_E_R_Y S_L_O_W !! But many times, the file transfer process slows to such an extend it just STOPS !! I mean, the thing just grind to a halt in the middle, and there's no way around it other than re-download the file. This has been a very frustrating experience. The WIFI router is LinkSys, we set up according to the owner's manual. So far, we don't see any weirdness about the router. We have checked the settings of the WIFI router several times, again, we found no clue as to what is going on. BTW, if we use the DESKTOP PC, which is connected to the Net via ADSL, to download files from RapidShare, the problem of S_L_O_W_N_E_S_S didn't happen. And ten times out of ten we can download ANY FILE of ANY SIZE (up to 100MB) from RapidShare without a hitch ! I know that we can use the "sneaker + USB-drive net" to get around the problem, ie, download the files from RapidShare on the desktop PC, copy the files to the USB drives, and then transfer the files into our notebooks. And often times we had to do that, when we are frustrated enough on the "die in the middle" events. But all in all, we would preferred that we can find a solution to solve this S_L_O_W_N_E_S_S problem. Dear Gurus, Do you have any suggestion as to how to solve this problem? Please help !!  - PPoE set-up Gentlemen, I know I'm in the wrong place, but I need some help for my ISP questions to ask. Connecting through PPoE, I can't attach any MS Office files and PDF (I didn't try other formats), through Yahoo mail, Gmail, Hotmail, etc. So when you compose a message no MS Office files can be attached.  - wireless router to wireless router - can any consumer routers do I have two home offices, and it would be nice to have a wireless router in each office that has 4 ports that I can plug wired ethernet connections into (or wired routers). One of the two offices has the broadband connection (DSL). I've been looking at the products sold by Best Buy and other stores, and it is unclear what is the best way to do this. For the remote office not connected directly to the broadband DSL line, would it make any sense to use a real wired router and then connect that wired router to a "wireless access point"?  - DNS resolver problem (?) with XP systems on home LAN (long) Background: I have several XP Home/Pro systems on my home LAN. All have private, hard-coded IP addresses (192.168.1.x). There is a ZyXel hardware firewall/VPN router between my LAN and my ISP's cable modem. The ZyXel gets a DHCP-assigned IP address from the ISP (Comcast), but nothing else. Specifically, it doesn't have the ability to retrieve the addresses of Comcast's DNS Servers, and thus it's not possible for it to propagate those addresses to my LAN systems. Thus, I have to hard-code the DNS server addresses on my home systems. But that's worked OK for several years. The problem(s): Last week, Comcast apparently changed their DNS servers (I can no longer ping the old ones). No big deal, except that Comcast now refuses to give me the addresses of their new DNS servers!!! (although Time Warner - who I had been with before Comcast bought them out last year - happily gave out their DNS server addresses). So I used nslookup to poke around and find the addresses of what I think are Comcast's new DNS servers. But when I configure my home systems to use those DNS server addresses and then ping a host by name (eg, www.rice.edu) the name resolution fails*, although I can use nslookup to resolve that same name! (and I can ping the DNS servers by their addresses) * that is, it gets an error trying to resolve the name, even before attempting to issue the ping. Thinking that Comcast's servers were doing something strange, I configured a home system to use one of the Root DNS servers at VeriSign, but the name resolution still fails when I try to ping anything by name So, if I can resolve names using nslookup, then why can't XP resolver do the same? Are there XP firewall settings that might be blocking the DNS server replies (although if that were true, then why doesn't it block nslookup and why did it just now begin failing?) Were there any recent Windows Updates to the XP resolver? And what settings should I be using for the "Append DNS suffixes" on the DNS tab of the Advanced TCP/IP Settings? And also for the registration-related checkboxes at the bottom of that tab? I've never really understood what these did in my configuration.  - Solve mystery... got wireless, noticed anti-virus disabled twice The story... I just installed the basic Linksys WAP54G wireless access point (on WinXP-pro PC). We have simple systems here, all it really is for at moment is to connect to kids' Wii...so it can retrieve, weather, firmware updates, etc. I'm using a good security I think WPA-AES (I think), and password, and disabled SSID broadcast (after this happened). While setting up wireless, I noticed have maybe 5-6 neighbors with wireless, recognized 1 or 2, everybody mostly works, certainly no computer-saavy teenagers, although one's military (great neighbor), and one (adult) is a little odd and known to do web stuff, but he's 700 feet away (3 houses down). But I noticed over the next week or two, twice when I went to use PC in morning (sometimes left on all night, sometimes shut down)... McAfee was displaying a warning... something like "Warning your PC is not protected"... then when went into McAfee to look at settings under its 4 or so protection categories... Computers and Files * Internet/Network Email and IM Parental *The Computers and Files was "disabled", this I think is the one that instant-scans ANYTHING incoming... like files I open, programs I execute, etc. I turned it back "on" both times, and once did a McAfee full scan, it said all ok, except for usual cookies. Adaware didn't find anything either. The questions... Wondering if anyone has opinions on these things, plus welcome any additional comments... Someone probably did get "in" your PC, and the main reason was because SSID was broadcasted, and unless you had a drive-by laptop hacker, the hacker would have been one of the 6 neighbors T[ ] or F[ ]. You likely have someone who actually got IN your computer. The way to tell is by _____. And now the action you need to take is____ T[ ] or F[ ]. Someone probably used a tool to disable McAfee, but it would be harder to get much further T[ ] or F[ ]. WiFi doesn't go too far, so no way it would reach the guy three houses down T[ ] or F[ ]. If you had a hacker, you'd know it, because there would be a trail and they would likely do some noticeable damage T[ ] or F[ ].  - How to force using specific connection Is there an easy way to force XP to use one connection always? I tried disabling others, but it still tries to access them. Manipulating routing table would do it, but I have repeat the operation few times a day, so I need a quick way to implement it. The problem is that even though only one of the connections is active, XP tries randomly all the others and I have to repeat e.g. opening up web page 1-30 times before connection is established.  - Cannot aquire network address on second computer I'm trying to set up a network in my home without having to buy expensive equipment. We currently have a broadband connection with two induvial computers. My plan is to set up a network for these computers so they gain access to the internet via the modem and an 8-port switch. Before I got started, the desktop computer worked fine, then once I hooked up the switch and connected the second computer, I could not get a connection. The switch I have boasts plug-and-play capabilities, but I just am not able to get both of the computers online at the same time. I've tried just about everything I can imagine (i.e. checking cables, connections, reseting the modem, ect.) and all I get is a prompt stating that the conncection is limited.  - IE 7 & Accessing a secure log in page I am using Internet Explorer 7 with Windows XP. I have had no problems prior to this accessing a particular web page. I am still able to get to the main page and a secure log in page, but when I try and enter my name and password nothing at all happens. I contacted the help desk at the company of the webpage and they can't figure out what the problem is. I am able to log in using Moxilla Firefox as my browser, why can't I access it throught Internet Explorer any longer? I much prefer to use IE 7. Hope you can help.  - Can't connect to the internet I have three machines that I use through my Linksys router, two desktops (wired) and one laptop (wireless). One of my desktops (running XP SP2) can suddenly no longer make a connection to the internet or download e-mail in Outlook. It is able to talk to the router and can see the other computers attached to it, but can't make an internet connection. The other two machines are having no problems. Surprisingly, a gnutella-based file sharing application that I have running on the maching still can make a connection and exchange files. I have tried all of the usual fixes...checked cables, replaced cables, rebooted the PC, powered down the router and the cable modem, bypassed the router and wired directly into the modem, even unplugged the ethernet cable going into the PC and plugged it directly into the laptop (internet worked fine on the laptop).  - Reactiontime opening a word document out of word or within explore Dear experts, in our area we use Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 R2. All components use the latest patches and service packs. There is a network share which is locally mapped using a driveletter. When we try to open a word document (doc-file) by using the command "File - open" out of word, navigating to the document on the shared drive the doc is opened quickly at all times. When the user navigates to the shared drive (using the drive letter) and just left-clicks the document in windows explorer it takes longer than a minute while ms word opens up and loads the document. This happens 5-10 times, then things go a lot faster for a while and then it takes longer again. Any ideas how to solve that problem ? We currently do not have any error reports in eventlog, nor any other phenomens. All the systems are working good, except that one problem. Would appreciate any suggestions for further diagnostics. I would like to network a wireless laptop and two desktops using a Linksys wireless 4 port router before I subscribe to a cable or DSL service then at a later date add the cable/dsl modem.  - one way ping and networking problem I have a network of xp pro computers all with service pack 2. One computer (FAULTY) is not responding to any ping messages or connection open messages from other machines in the network. I can ping to other machines from that FAULTY. I could open a remote desktop session from FAULTY to other machines in the network. but again I cannot connect to this machine remotely. I checked to confirm that the windows firewall is not running. I ran a network packet sniffer and can see the incoming ICMP messages. but strangely it is not responding to them. Do you have any suggestions? I'm having trouble with a printer and a specific application and I feel that if I can see what's getting sent to the printer then I might be able to solve this issue. Or at least get the right vendor, software or printer, to take a closer look at the issue. I've been searching for packet sniffers and there are just so many that I don't know how to choose one. Is there a favorite out there? Something open source or free would be best for the budget of course.  - Strange problem, I really need help I've been fighting this problem for two weeks, searching for help online, from newsgroups, reading manuals, etc with no luck. So please, if you have any idea what to do, share them. I installed USB based (3G) modem, which lead to the problem. Here are symptoms: - After installing the modem first some socket connections couldn't be established, then it became denser, now only about 1/20 succeeds - It seems random when socket connection succeeds, the variance is from every second to try every 33rd try. - The problem occurs with all means of connection (Ethernet, WLAN, modem) - The problem occurs with all TCP types of connection (Telnet, SSH, HTTP, etc), BUT ICMP works alright all the time - The problem occurs in all networks I've tried -> It looks like TCP packets are sent out because on connection tries the amount of transfered data increases, but received amount stays the same, meaning either that the target never receives the packet or its return packet never reaches my computer - Establishing network connection doesn't give any specific error, e.g. telnet just says 'connection could not be established' - If I use localhost listening socket (e.g. ssh tunnel to http-proxy), the connection doesn't even reach that meaning that not even localhost connections are working, BUT if an external computer tries to use my tunnel to proxy, it works fine, no problem at all - Web browser doesn't return any errors, clicking a link just doesn't do anything (besides on that 20th try or so), which leads me to believe that packets don't even reach gateway. Although routing table looks alright, e.g. with Modem connection the primary gateway points to localhost - Windows firewall is off and I don't have any other firewalls - In Safe-Mode everything works alright, starting XP in 'last good known configuration' doesn't help - Uninstalling the modem doesn't help Thanks in advance any advices you can give.  - Can't connect to internet Hi folks, I am helping a friend with his PC and I connected a Cat 5 cable from my router to his PC. His computer tells me that there is a problem connecting to the internet and it will not connect. This is a Win98SE PC but I have connected this way many times in the past although with an older Netgear Router. The Router I currently use is a Belkin Wireless N router. I can connect other PC's this way (using the cable to one of the router ports) with no problems. This PC, however, will not connect, FireFox times out as does any other access event. I read another post in here and changed from Automatically obtain an address to the IP address and subnet for TCP/IP for a device in my range (eg 192.168.2.4) I also entered the default gateway address manually to my router address. It still does not connect. Is there something in the computer or the router setup causing this? I've disabled the firewall on the PC to no avail. I also used ipconfig /all and it reports the proper IP address and gateway address. I also tried ping using the router address and it reported times??? info It appears to be working but no internet - can someone help?  - Mapped Network Drives Problem I have three machines all running XPSP2. The main machine is called Figaro the other two are quality and jfk. I have mapped some of the drives on Figaro to the other two machines and for some reason those mapped drives are no longer accessible. In Explorer they show up as disconnected network drives and when I click on one I get the error message, "An error occured while reconnecting P: to \\FIGARO\C$ Microsoft Windows Network : The network name cannot be found. This connection has not been restored. I disconnected the mapped C Drive from Figaro and I cannot remap it. I get the error message "The network path \\figaro\c$ cannot be found." It doesn't matter if the firewalls (Kaspersky Internet Suite) are on or off. What is truly weird is that I can connect to Figaro from quality using remote desktop. I can ping Figaro from quality and vice versa. If I open "My Network Places" on quality and go to entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network > Workgroup (The name of my workgroup) > it lists all three machines. When I click on Figaro I can see all the printer, Shared Docs, printer and faxes and Scheduled tasks folders. Doing all of the above on the third box, jfk, yields the same results.  - Ethernet: Little or No Connectivity at my wits end! I'm using Service Pack 2. My ethernet connection has the "Little or no connectivity message". It doesn't matter whether it's plugged into another computer with internet sharing, plugged into a router or directly to the cable modem - I can't get an IP address and the connection won't repair. The problem being that there apparently is not two way communication with the printer across the wireless network and therefore we cannot get the status of the printer, ie ink status.  - Migrating to DHCP Believe it or not there are still companies that have IT people that don't depoly DHCP and just so happens I just started working for one such company. Anyways I'm trying to find an easy way to change all the clients (300) over to DHCP from static IP addressing. I've been unable to locate a script, program or GP setting that will assist and I don't want to have to do this manually. Any ideas or suggestions we be great!  - Mapped Drive not showing share name We have an issue on many of our office XP workstations where they will have 5 or 10 mapped drives which re-map through logon scripts however sometimes one of them will just say Network Drive (G:) or whatever the letter is instead of saying something like sharename$ on servername (G:) Does anyone have any ideas?  - Cannot connect to the printer operation could not be completed I used to have two desktops A & B, they have internet sharing an printer sharing , they were working fine Desktop A XP Professional SP2 PC has got two printers (HP an Samsung) connected directly (USB cable), and Printer sharing is turne on I bought another Desktop to replace B, because B is an old PC From the Desktop B, when attempting to chose the option Code ------------------- A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer ------------------- , to add a shared printer , I can browse and see the printers name (h and Samsung), however, when I attempt t connect both of them, I get the following error: Code ------------------- cannot connect to the printer operation could not be completed erro ------------------- Do I need to have admin account with their passwords on both Deskto to be able to share the printers Tag: Win XP Home: Computer not seen on network Tag: 287679

#1 runs Win XP Home. Can view shared folders on #2, has full internet
access, is seen by DSL gateway. Guest user is turned on. File sharing is
turned on, folders have been shared.

#2 can't see #1 in Network Places. When path is entered in the Run command
field "The network path was not found" error is returned.

The problem is with NetBT - either the setting, or with a firewall. What
antivirus protection do you have?

Check the NetBT setting - make sure that it is Enabled, explicitly.
