    - Can XP Home join a domain? Hello, I want to ask if there is someone who knows how to join a domain in XP Home. I already know that it is in general impossible to join a domain in XP Home, but I also have heard that there exist some tricks to do it. Also I have heard that there are programs (like X-setup Pro) that can be used. However, I have tried X- setup Pro...but I had no great result with it. So, I want ask here if somebody can help me !     - Wobbly network bridge Current setup is: (Internet) - Router - Lan - PC - WLan - PDA PC has Lan + WLan bridged The PDA gets an IP address from the router which is serving out DHCP, so the wlan connection would seem to be working, but the PDA can't ping either the PC or the router and vice-versa.     - Domain Network Refresh we are having a Active Directory based network on windows 2003 many users can not use internet or access LAN, shared drives and printers, even they are not accessible from domain controller nor remote desktop can be used until the repair their network connection action is performed, here are the details 1) Server 2003 SP1 (AD) 2) DHCP enabled 3) traffic goes through ISA 2000 4) Clients are Windows XP Pro SP2 (domain user account is restricted user account on local machine not administrator of local machine) is there any policy settings which can do a network refresh or repair on whole domain on regular bases or some method, script or batch file to do so as some user have restricted account on local computer to prevent Installation of new softwares and changing certain settings, so they are not able to repair network settings. they have to either do a logoff or reboot for the internet to work or share LAN shared drivers. please someone help me as this is drawing me nuts every morning when users starts their pc's in the morning and i have to run to their desks please help Thanx Bikram Tag: Help with new network Tag: 286929

    - Unclear browstat Output At one time, I only had one XP Pro and one XP Home machine on the LAN, along with three Win98SE and 1 Win2K machine. When the XP Pro machine would try to map to any of the older machines, it did so with no problems. When I tried to map to the XP Home machine, Explorer crashed, reset, and I had to reboot to get back to full operation. I have since added another XP Pro machine, and have the same issues. I found articles that indicated that mine might be a browser issue. I ran browstat, and found that this machine has the Master browser, but then the browstat result indicates that I do not, and only pulls up one win 98 machine. For example, the machine is ERELKES3, no domain, workgroup=WORKGROUP C:\HOLD\Browstat>BROWSTAT STATUS Status for domain WORKGROUP on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{1BAB579C-9DA0-491F -9E1C-01699ECE7AC1} Browsing is active on domain.     - windows management instrumentation (wmi) possibly corrupted when I open the advanced tab within the wireless network connection settings it says that the windows management instrumentation (wmi) information might be corrupted and that I should use system restore to correct the issue.     - NetBios over TCP/IP Hello, I'm sorry if my English isn't so good, I hope it's good enough to explain my problem. What I have got: - A LAN with winXP machines behind a router - The router is connected to the Internet - A lan drive (samba server) is connected to the router DHCP is disabled. When I am in the LAN I can browse the lan drive through NetBT typing \\landrivename in the address bar. I want to do the same using a remote PC anywhere over the Internet and a dynamic DNS. What I done: - activated a DDNS service - configured the router to forward: UDP 137:139 and TCP 139 to the lan drive I don't know how to tell IE (or other browsers) to use NetBT protocols. If I type: "myip.ddns.address" the browser assumes it's an http request and hence uses the port 80. In this case the router administration page will answer. smb:\\myip.ddns.address doesn't work as well as myip.ddns.address:139 I'd try to do a request on a port and configure the router to forward on another one.     - Network connection Windows Adv 2000 server and wkstn using xp home I teach a computer lab in an elementary school. We have a server with Windows Advanced Server 2000. Our workstations are XP Home edition (don't ask me why). I have set up two different users in the lab, both with admin permissions. My question is on one user account at a workstation, I can access our server without having to go through a login/password window. On the same workstation, under the other user account it asks me to give a login and password before connecting to the server. I am no expert with the server (nor the workstations for that matter).     - Networking > 9 Users I am trying to have more than 9 users on the microsoft network. We have a T-1 with a router and a 16 port switch. All computers/network printers have been running fine. We've tried to add a 10th computer to the network and the computer only has limited connectivity and does not find the workgroup. Talked to the T-1 and router people....they say it's not a problem with their equipment. When we plugged the 10th computer into the switch...all the lights light...meaning no problems with the switch.     - Increasing the UDP-buffer Hello together, I have a problem with my UDP-connection. I want to create a UDP-connection via an Gigabit-Ethernet-cable. For that purpose I tested the UDP-performance between two WinXP-systems with netperf, iperf and a self-made test-utility. The problem is: I got only 150 to 170Mbit with UDP but 420MBit with TCP. How is that possible? Could this cause by a low value of a UDP-buffer. By the way: while my testings the CPU-usage was at approximately 55% (if taskmanager works properly) so I don't think that the performance is the bottleneck.     - Troubleshooting scan shows failure with Ethernet card, please help Hello. My pc runs XP (pro) media edition. Display has all nvidia, including ethernet card, IDE drivers, etc. I have been unable to FAX successfully from my computer as I used to, and unable to view the status of my connections, which I also used to be able to view. A few months ago I had multiple trojans, and spyware, even with the programs to combat these on my computer. I have worked very hard to clean this up, and now my pc is running very well other than the networking issues. Last night I ran a diagnostic networking scan, which showed failure with the 10/100 Fast Ethernet Card. I am going to try to attach the scan results, in the hope that someone will be able to help me figure out how to correct the above issues before I lose my mind.     - help with acessing folders hello here is the strange situation I have a laptop and a desktop the desktop also has a wireless card when I connect via tha wireless network in ad-hoc mode everthing works fine, and I can access the shared folders from the laptop to the desktop and vise versus.     - Wireless printer problem I have an HP DJ 6988 wireless printer that works off my home network with a Linksys Wireless Router. We have two computer hardwired into the network. My wife has added the printer via the Network Printer method. When she prints to the printer, for some reason it pops up a Preview Box on my computer and will not print until we click the Continue Printing button on my printer. When I print from my laptop, I don't get this Preview pop-up. We do not have the Preview selected on either machine. In fact, it is difficult to get to the Printer/Properties on her machine. If we right-click on the printer icon on her machine, we get an error message about some Service not running.     - Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage...but it used to! I was able to access www.lipstickalley.com just fine up until about a month or so ago. Ever since then, everytime I try to access the site I get rerouted to Yahoo! search or it just says that it cannot be displayed. I've tried three different browsers, IE, Netscape, and Firefox and still nothing. I'm able to access other sites just fine and I am able to access this particular site on other pc's. I have McAfee installed and Windows Firewall is off. I tried pinging the website and it comes back at 100% loss, request timed out. I've called Comcast and they show no restrictions on my server and had me run a tracert. Based on that, they said something was wrong with the routing in the area and had engineers come out and fix.     - Very odd web connectivity behavior I have Verizon FIOS. If I go to Speedtest I get numbers that reflect the performance I am paying for, 15 up, 2 down. The problem is with Web behavior and it doesn't seem to matter if I'm using IE or Firefox. I click on a link and the status just goes to "done", nothing happens. I can click it quite a few times before it actually goes to the page, then it loads fast. This occurs all the time on any number of sites. Or it will give me an error page, but it will connect upon refresh. I have the Actiontech modem/wireless router from Verizon. The support they offer is useless, when they can be contacted. This has gone on for weeks now, and before I just tell them to come pull everything out I want to hear other ideas. I have run Spybot and Adaware as well as AVG. The system is clean. I am not able to connect to the web and recieve the message "Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Webpage". I have disabled the Firewall and have disabled the Antivirus Program. I have ran Ad-Aware 2007 and have ran WinsockXPFix, ISPFIX, LSPFix, RegCure and they have corrected found problems with out correcting the connection problem. I can see my Local Network but not the WAN through IE. I have even tried reinstalling IE7 and Windows XP Pro (over itself) and yet I still can not see the web. I have the same problem if I connect via Wireless, Wired, or Broadband Cellular. My OS when booted states that there is Updates to be installed but will not download them or install them due to no connectivity. Even when I try to access the MS Update Site it will not display the webpage. The only updates that I have not installed is the .NET Framework 2.0 Update and the 3.0 Update. I have searched the forum for assistance and have tried everything that has been suggested in previous forums without success. I am just about ready to REFORMAT and RE-Install the OS to see if that works. I am able to get online with other computers (both Wired and Wireless) over the same network but not on my DELL Inspiron 5100 Laptop that is having the issues. When I go to a web page with a lot of information, then my network fails .. basically, the network activity stalls, the web page does not fully load and my network drives fail ... the best way to resolve is for me to manually go and disable the network connection and enable again (which is frustrating).     - Can't Share Folders I'm having a very odd problem. First of all, I have a network between three computers all running XP Pro, and they've always worked, I just set the same workgroup for all of them and I'm good, I've never had to create the same accounts on all computers or whatever that entails. It's always pretty much just been plug and play. Anyways, I just reformatted my computer and the first thing I did was share my printer, that worked flawlessly, and it has been working. I joined the same workgroup of course (HOME, not MSHOME) and I could see the other two computers and read the shared files and folders and what not. However, when I then decided to share a folder of my own (Something which I always used to do), none of the other two computers could access it. They could see my computer in the workgroup but they would get an 'access denied' error. I read about the 'restrictanonymous' registry key which seems to work for many and I applied it but after restarting it always resets back to 1, the other two computers have it at 0. Keep in mind that everything is perfect other than the fact that no one else can access my shared folders, but I can access their's. I've even created accounts named after the other computer's usernames (Something which I've never had to do) and that didn't work either. At first I thought it was zonealarm but I uninstalled it and the problem persists, could it be that it left something behind? Should I reinstall the file and printer sharing component?     - XP Pro machine will not stay connected to network for more than 30 I have a computer that was running normally for several years. Suddenly, it started off the network after about 30 mins after boot. It couldn't see other machines and they couldnt see it. Rebooting solves the problem for another 30 mins or so. I put a second PCI network card in the machine and connected to that - and the problem remained, so it is not the hardware. I replaced the network switches. I ran SPYBOT S&D and several WINSOCK repair utilities. Event log showed another computer on the net trying to become a browser master. I shut that machine off. None of the other machines on my network (6) have this problem. The only possible clue I have is that I'm getting an WARNING (in event log) that I'm exceeding the maximum number of connection attempts. NETSCAN shows 7 devices connected - but XP allows 10, right?     - Laptop on two different networks I have a network set up with wireless router, XP home networking, file sharing, printer sharing, internet access, etc. Desktop and laptop with XP on that network. Works well. I want to set up a similar network at another location, different desktop, router, ISP, etc., but be able to use the laptop on this network as well as the home network. Will that work? How do I set up the laptop with respect to the home network settings for both networks? Also, if another laptop computer is to be added to one of the networks, and that laptop has Vista, will that work? Need to change anything about the network itself?     - All my folders are Read-only! All of my folders show Read-only in the Property->General check box. If I clear this, a dialog (Applying Attributes) shows all the sub-folders being cleared, but when i reopen it, it's back to Read-only again!     - Network Bridge I previously had a setup where my dlink wireless card bridged with my lan card, and the network was extended to my 360. That card suspiciously broke, and now I am left with a belkin F5d8010 pre- N wireless PCMCIA wireless adapter in my laptop. Whenever I try to bridge the 2 connections, the internet says it is connected and the bridge says it is connected, but the internet is actually disconnected.     - Looking to disable AD HOC option Hello and good day. I have several laptops for my organization that I need to set ad hoc on wireless connection properties to never be an option, ie disabled, greyed out etc. The Laptops are windows xp SP2. We are not using Active Directory, instead samba on our network. I was able to get GPMC.msc installed, however I am unable to use the group policy object editor to setup a wireless policy without Active Directory. I have foud through gpedit.msc the following snap in;" Local Computer Policy/User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Componets /Microsoft Management Console/Restricted/Permitted snap-ins/Group Policy/Group Policy snap-in extensions/Wireless Networ (IEEE 802.11) Policies. I have enabled it but am unable to set a policy using it. Does anyone know a work around to set local policy for xp not using Active Directory.     - Security Alert - then floods of empty IE6 windows I'm getting some very bizarre behaviour here. I'm in a program called Magix Movie Edit Pro - although I don't think that's necessarily going to prove central to the issue. I click a button that's supposed to take me to an online site for downloading video resources. A window appears titled 'Security Alert'. Its message is: "You are about to leave a secure Internet connection. It will be possible for others to view information you send. Do you want to continue?" That's a fairly familiar window - from a web browser - but as I said, I'm not. Anyway, I clicked No. That started a unstoppable flood of 'empty' IE6 windows! All titled something like 'No page to display'. Within seconds I had over a hundred covering the desktop. And I don't even *use* IE - my browser is Firefox. XP Home Task Manager brought an end to this, but I had to force closure of Movie Edit Pro and then IE6. 'Yes' takes me to the site, where I'm asked to register. I decline, so close that page. That returns me to the 3 options. 'More Info' gives a window titled 'What's new in Internet Explorer'! Where does that come from? Its content is the familiar one: "Entering a non-secure Web site from a secure Web site. The Web site you were viewing was a secure site. A secure Web site provides secure communication and has a valid certificate. blah blah ... If you do not feel confident about viewing this site, click No." Which is where I came in... Can anyone offer any clue as to what might be going on here please?     - Creating an icon for a mapped drive to a Win2003 Server fails. We have a share on our Windows 2003 server that we can map network drives to by using the address \\192.168.1.100\t$ If we use the map network drive command in My Computer from Windows XP, the mapping works fine. If we try to do the mapping by creating a shortcut icon on the desktop of the XP machine (right click on the desktop, click New, and then Shortcut, and key in \\192.168.1.100\d$ for the location of the item), we get an error indicating that "the file cannot be found".     - Wireless LAN ongoing problem I thought I had this working the other day, but it is onlly partially working. Here's the recap: I have a desktop and laptop each running XP Home and each connected to the internet via a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router. The desktop is connected to the router via ethernet cable. The laptop is wirelessly connected to the router. Both computers access the internet successfully. Using the Network Setup Wizard on each, I've tried to define a Home Network over which I can share files and printers between the two computers. For each computer I have specified "other" for the Connection Method and then specified "This computer connects to the Internet directly or through a network hub. Other computers on my network also connect to the Internet directly or through a hub." (Is this the wrong option in the Network Wizard?) I've assigned each to the same Working Group and specified File and printer Sharing to be turned on. I am using User accounts with the same name, password, and administrator privileges on both computers. In My Network Places on the Laptop, the Desktop is recognized, but when I click to open the Desktop icon I get the following message: \\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found." I have since resolved this issue by turning off the Windows Firewall and Norton Firewall on the desktop, and now from the laptop I can access the shared folder on the desktop and print to the printer physically connected to the desktop. But in My Network Places on the Desktop the Laptop computer does not show up at all. Turning off the firewall on the laptop does not fix the problem. advice, should i purchase four great computers and XP Pro, or get a server
with XP pro on the computers. Right now I am peer to peer with Xp home and
older computers, it is starting to become an issue. Also I presume I would be
better off wired since the lines are already there? I would like to move in
the future though so wireless may be nice. Any advice would be appreciated.
