Ethernet over USB

Hello,



I am working on a project where I want to connect my Windows desktop to a
Linux embedded computer I am working with using ethernet over USB. For
example, I want both computers to be able to ping each other from the command
line over the USB cable (I can currently do this with the ethernet cable I
have connecting them). I have heard that Windows has some native support for
ethernet over USB, but I don't know more than that (i.e. what drivers to use,
how to set them up, etc.).

AFAIK XP cannot do direct networking over USB, you need a USB ethernet
adapter or a special cable designed to link PC's via USB.

you can get what are called USB Transfer cables.
terms like- usb to usb network data link cable
or USB transfer cable , in ebay
then - (minus) keywords that you don't want that appear like samsung
and psp(playstation) and junk. And you'll get what you want.
There is one by a company called Trust
The name PC Linq rings a bell, maybe tha was just the software.
Maybe Win XP supports it without the need for extra software. I used
it with win98. It needed file transfer software.(which it came with) I
don't recall it needing drivers.. but maybe it did.

I don't know if they use ethernet and if you can do more than just
transfer files with them.


AFAIK USB Ethernet adaptors convert USB port to Ethernet, so you use
an Ethernet cable. Connecting comps directly, or connecting 1
computer to a USB modem. I don't think the adaptors go Ethernet port
to USB. So I don't think a USB-Ethernet adaptor would help you..

USB transfer cables are going out of fashion, (seem to be less of them
on ebay? - still many though) because people network their computers
with a network switch (built into almost every home router), and
ethernet cables.

So you guys all believe that there is no existing driver/application in
Windows that can support EEM (see USB Communications Subclass Specification
for Ethernet Emulation Model Devices)?

If the answer is no, how about for Ethernet Control Model (ECM)?
