Thank you, jack, for your reply. I will try this tho it does mean hauling my
computer to my neighbour's where the router is housed(we share the
connection). I doubt, however, that this is the source of the problem as 1)
it used to work fine, 2) downloads begin very quickly then become more and
more sluggish until they stop altogether. Norton and Windows updates follow
this patter(tho curiously automatic updates downloaded over time by
themselves). Sites that seem to have a heavy load seem to crash it. Today,
for example, I was able to access most of my online banking sites.
By the way, the vaious System Mechanic-type solutions I've tried or used
one-at-a-time. Still, I get you point
