    - What causes the wireless card to activate? I have Windows XP SP2 with a D link wireless adapter that communicates with a Microsoft MN 700 wireless router using 802.11g. Is there any software out there that can tell you what particular program is communicating wirelessly with the router? This computer is periodically (about every 20 seconds) communicating with the router. I am not downloading anything and I have no known applications open and running. When I logged on as a standard user, it came to my attention that Documents were being stored locally and weren't being synchronized with the server. Everything still works fine on Administrator accounts, although the Folder Redirection Policy is applied to all users on the domain.     - How can I get in my LAN when I boot from a WinPE disk? I have a home network of three computers, all under WinXP via modem NetComm NB5Plus4. I have a few boot disks, including Acronis emergency disk. If I boot a computer by this CD (from Acronis), I easily get in local area network and can save backup (a disk image) of one computer to another, i.e. through my network. It means that the operating system of this disk "sees" neighbouring computers in my network. But if I boot a computer by a WinPE disk, I cannot get in other computers of my network.     - Enable/Disable net as limited user Of safety reasons I would like to enable and disable my network connection, just enable it when I am surfing and disable it when I am not. When I am working as Administrator it is simple but I would like to do this as a limited access user. I have put a shortcut to a connection on the desktop. If I rightclick it, I get a popup meny with Enable or Disable. As Administrator, I can switch by clicking, as limited access user it is grayed out. How do I as a limited access user get permission to enable/disable? I have two Network Connections, "1394 Connection" and "Local Area Connection" although I do only have one physical (Ethernet) connection. How does this work? Are these connections two drivers connected in series, one handling the hardware and the other communicating with the local net I assume my apartment is connected to? Is this the way it is?     - WINXP Pro computers disappear from Network Places I have a network of five computers, all windows xp pro, no servers or domains, and all in same workgroup. Static IP (manually configured, not DHCP). When I restart my pc I can see all of them in Network Places, then after about 20 minutes, 3 of them (including mine) disappear. I can ping them, and still access mapped drives but can not see them in network places. I have checked ipconfig, ran cdiag, and browstat. XP firewall is disabled, I have KIS 7.0 and tried with and without it disabled with same results. The network has run fine for about 2 years, then about 2 weeks ago the PC's start disappearing. I have checked the browser service, even stopped them and restarted, checked power management, file and print sharing enabled, and for IP address conflicts.     - Peer to Peer problem Two computers, an HP desktop & a Toshiba laptop, share this problem. They can get to the Internet wireless through a Checkpoint firewall appliance/ap and email is no problem. They cannot see each other for peer to peer file sharing. Turned off XP's firewall and disabled F-Secure all together but to difference. As an experiment I connected them with a crossover cable and assigned IP's but still can ping each other. If I connect my laptop, either one of them can ping me but I cannot ping either of them. I can find no other software installed that might explain this. The F-Secure is current and up to date and runs a daily scan so virus or trojans are unlikely. The HP desktop has Internet Connection sharing turned on even though the Internet is through the CheckPoint appliance. Any ideas anyone? John. Tag: COMPUTER FREEZES Tag: 288749

    - See 2 Workgroups - Why / How? Sometimes I see 2 Workgroups in Windows Network. That's fine and I can imagine that it could be useful.     - Can't connect to server, see pics, download, sites etc... So it all started when Maxthon needed this update for something, I downloaded it, let it install. yada yada, then all of a sudden my browser goes berserk! and it can't run T_T SO I switch back over to IE while I downloaded the original maxthon again and fixed that problem. Well, after that happened some websites I frequent wouldn't come up, I'd get that annoying "can not find website" or "can not connect to server" error message. I thought I had a virus, so I downloaded trojan remover (*great* program, I'd swear by it) and it searched and destroyed some nasty ones but my problem only seems to be getting worse. So I fgured, hmm, maybe the simple version of maxthon screwed up my system. I'll check IE and see if it needs updated. So, I try and download IE7 and install it but first the box that is supposed to pop up DID pop up, but the page couldn't be viewed. So I clicked save target as on the download link and got the message "Cannot connect to server" My internet connection is running just fine. I have no idea what the problem is. People have told me I need to reset my DNS settings, but then my brother told me I needed to go to Windows Update, so I did...and I can't even get to the page, but I can get to the rest of the website. Also, some types of pictures on the internet won't show up for me either. On Weatherbug, all the images on that program don't show. On Yahoo and some forums I go to , the smilies don't work either.     - Unusual Dialup to LAN request Is it possible to set up a Win XP computer such that it can receive an incoming dialup call and allow the dialing computer access to a LAN? So: Computer A direct dials Computer B using 56K modems. Computer B is connected to an Ethernet LAN. Computer A now has access to the LAN. Possible? ---- Here's what I've tried: I set up a connection on Computer B to answer an incoming dialup call. I selected both that connection and the Local Area Connection, but when I right-click there is no "bridge Connections " on the menu. (None of this involves the Internet, BTW).     - Poor TCP performance over WAN with out-of-order packets Hi! I have the next problem: We have a 12 Mibt/s WAN. The delay is 40ms. There are out-of-order packets, from 10 packet come back 3 in incorrect order. Because of this, between two Windows (Windows XP, 2000 Professional, 2000 Server, or 2003 Server) is the maximum bandwidth 800kbit/s over TCP. It doesnâ??t matter, wich protocoll is in application layer (SMB, FTP, SSH,â?¦). In test environment is the same case, if i set out-of-order packets over the test connection (with random delay). Between two Linux isnâ??t any problem, they use the maximum available bandwith. And the most interesting thing: If the sender is Linux and the reciever is Windows, isnâ??t any problem. But if the sender is a Windows machine, it sends only with 800kbit/s. (Over the WAN, and in the test network too.)     - Offline files question Hi. Sorry if I over cross-posted! I have one staff member who travels a lot, and she has historically manually copied her entire (2GB) User directory to her (XP) laptop before travelling. Over a few years, this resulted in about five different versions of her directory, a situation I want to prevent from happening again. So I looked into enabling offline files, the theory being that there would be an intelligent process managing the syncronization of files between her laptop and the server (Small Business Server 2003). However, when I enable this and open the Offline Files Folder, what we see is an unordered list of a gazillion files, not at all in their heirarchical directory structure. It's impossible to find something like this. Is there a better solution? Are we not using Offline Files properly? If she copies her entire directory Any input is greatly appreciated!     - Problem with xp pro connecting to xp for gaming I have 2 xp sp2 home edition computers connected with one xp pro computer on a LAN. I can ping all three from all three. I can access all files and run programs. The only thing I can't do is get games (or my homeschoooling program) to work accross the network. The 2 xp sp2 computers do work and join the same game with zone alarms on and without. The xp pro can see the game or home schooling service running but won't connect. The xp pro computer just tells me it is 'unable to join game'. I have turned 'on' guest accounts. I have made the user and passwords all the same. I have tried both simple and classic file sharing. I have tried running in safe mode after disabling all firewalls, still nothing. I have disabled security policy features and enabled full access.     - XP _Pro_ only allowing 5 connections Hi, I have a freshly installed XP Pro SP2 (_not_Home_) only allowing 4 connections to shared folders (as seen with "net session"). I've been reading many MS KB articles about it and I understant XP _Pro_ should allow 10 connections. It is only XP + Apache & PHP. No antivirus, no Office, no nothing. In the network I have 7 computers having 2000 SP4, XP SP3 and Vista SP1, but it does not seem to depend on which ones are first. It only allows 5. I've tried some registry hacks suggested by MS about not allowing anonymous connections but this does not seem to solve nothing. Please help!     - Sharing Scheduled Tasks to people without administrative rights Hello everyone, I have done the following: - created a share "WINDOWS$" on folder "T:\WINDOWS" - granted Read access to Everyone on that share - executed the command "cacls T:\WINDOWS\Tasks /E /G Everyone:R" What I can do now is to open an explorer and navigate to \\machinename \WINDOWS$\Tasks. So far so good. The problem is: The folder is displayed as a normal folder. I can see the .job files and even the SchedLgU.Txt and the SA.DAT. Both computers are able to use the internet without trouble. The XP computer can map the shared folders of the 98SE computer and browse/read/write to them. The 98SE computer can NOT view/map/read/write to the shared folders on the XP.     - Setting up a network in Vista OK, I admit it, I'm not a computer guy. I recently bought a new (Vista Home Premium) PC to replace my XP PC. On the XP PC I had a wireless network I could access with my PDA and laptop from almost anywhere in my house. With the Vista PC I fail constantly. I have read a handful of web articles on how to accomplish this but I apparently am missing a step. The Netgear router is working on the Vista PC. Firewall on the laptop is (when I'm trying to get a connection) disabled. The Network status on the laptop and PDA show a good signal. How do I troubleshoot this? FWIW, 'Connect to a Network' on the Vista PC and laptop show 2 networks - one secured and one unsecured. I don't know why. All I want is the secured. Can I uninstall these wireless networks and create a new one? The Vista PC also has a wired?/cabled? network to access the cable modem and NAS. Does this make a difference?     - Problem with a connection windows XP Home SP3 I have a wired network that has 11 or 12 computers connected all running a mix of XP home & Vista. I have a 3com switched hub with 32 ports and all network cards are 10/100. I have one computer that has a program that gets shared by users on the network and everything works fine except for one laptop running XP home. The laptop can see all of the computers on the network and can share files with all but one. I can access the drive through network neighborhood and move around to all locations on that drive. My problem is that if I try to map the drive like I normally do it says no connections to that system are available. I can go to any other computer on the network and map to the computer with no problem. I am only having the problem with the laptop. I have move the network connection to another port and that didn't help. Two days ago I was able to make the connection and it worked all day with no problem. I am totally confused with this one. Another thing is that I can take the same network cable and move it to another computer and I can work with that one no problem. It is something to do with a setting on the laptop. They want to use their laptops to communicate with main office through remote desktop when they are at the remote office. the main site uses fixed Ip addreses, the remote one has single phone point with home type broadband (no fixed Ip).     - Insufficient access to your computer to connect to selected printe Hello, I work for a school and am having the below problem sporadically in various computer labs. At login, we use a script that executes net use commands to connect to the appropriate printers for individual users. Sometimes the printers are not added correctly, but no error is given at login. We have placed an icon on the desktop which is just a shortcut to \\computername\printername that students can use to install a printer if it didn't auto-install at login. But occassionally when the printers don't automatically install and students try to connect to the printer with this icon they get the message "You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer." The weird part is that if they click the icon again and again, eventually it will work - they connect to the printer and are able to use it. Sometimes clicking it a 2nd time works, sometimes it takes up to 10 times, but eventually they are able to connect to the printer. In my research I have seen references to the "Prevent users from installing printer drivers" setting in local security policy which is disabled. I have also seen that people get this error when they do not have access to the spool directory, or they are not power users, neither of which is the case. We will see this in a computer lab sometimes for days or weeks at a time, then it will disappear and return again weeks later. It won't happen to all of the labs at the same time. The printers are HP Laserjet 3500n and 3600n models. We have been having some trouble with their drivers recently which may be related. I have tried removing all users from the security settings on the printer share and readding them. Any ideas what would cause this and why it would be intermittant? Thanks!     - Remote Desktop Group Policy Problem With the "Set time limit for active Terminal Services session=15min" and "Terminate session when time limits are reached = Enabled" group policieas on a XP client Remote Assistance and Remote Desctop Connection sessions should be terminated after 15min. I have these policies set on all XP clients in case of a Remote Assistence session it works as it is supposed, the session is terminated after 15 min.     - can't ping certain ip addresses on private network i have 2 different xp pro pc's on 2 different networks that can't ping the network attached printers on those networks. other workstations can ping the printers ok. these workstations can ping other workstations on the network without a problem. i have the firewalls disabled on both pc's and norton is disabled on both pc's. both have that latest updates installed. there's nothing in the printer setup that can block a particular ip. the printers are from ricoh/savin, toshiba and hp. any ideas? thanks in advance -- a few miles from nowhere...     - VPNs Subnets Workgroups NetBIOS traffic, implications XP Pro, Vista I just connected 3 sites with VPNs between each pair of them. I'm trying to get My Network Places to either show or not show the computers at the other sites. At times I can see all the computers and at other times not. I can enable/disable NetBIOS broadcase traffic over the VPNs. This has an effect but I'm not sure what all.... At one point when we had this set up earlier it seemed that the Master Browser for one site was located at another site. I'm sure that the NetBIOS broadcast traffic was enabled in the VPNs. There is no WINS running - this is strictly peer to peer networking. It has served us very well and keeps things simple. The subnets are subnets of 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.128 255.255.255.224 with workgroup of WORKGROUP 192.168.1.160 255.255.255.224 with workgroup of WORKGROUP 192.168.1.192 255.255.255.192 with workgroup of WORKGROUP We have turned off the computer browser service on most computers in an attempt to speed things up and to make them more deterministic. Even so, this means that there are perhaps 2 computers per site that have Computer Browser service started. What I need is a simple system that will allow access to computers from site to site - drive mapping perhaps or at least visibility into shared folders; access to printers; etc. I could turn off NetBIOS broadcast traffic altogether. What would that mean? What does having it enabled do? It appears that having it disabled allows each site's computers to be seen reliably in My Network Places on computers at that site / subnet. I could change the name of the workgroups so they are unique to each subnet. Might that be a good idea? What are the implications? Moving laptops from one to another would be a bit more trouble? I'm OK with accessing computers by their IP addresses and folder share names only. Whatever .... the My Network Places should be consistent at each site and reliable. I'm looking for suggestions as to how to configure things while keeping a peer-to-peer network without WINS, etc. and suggestions as to what to expect with this or that set of settings or possibilities as above. Turn off NetBIOS via the VPNs - Use a common workgroup name. Turn on NetBIOS via the VPNs - Use a common workgroup name. ... I have added persistent routes to *some* of the computers so far so that they point to the VPN when trying to access the other subnets. This is not the case on all computers ..yet.     - DSL Modem/Router and Internet Connection Sharing Don't know if this is possible=85 I have a customer with DSL using a 2wire 1801G wireless router. There are (6) desktops with (1) acting as a server (XP Server) for some custom software for their business. All desktops are running XP professional. I'm trying to make the network as fast as possible for this custom software so I got a gigabit switch and all the desktops have gigabit ethernet cards. In the interest of keeping the 2wire out of the gigabit loop I set up Internet Connection Sharing on a second (10/100) ethernet card on the XP Server. The 2wire router is set up in the default router configuration doing the PPOE login. The router assigns IP's in the 192.168.1.x range to the (4) switched ports and to the wireless clients. The WAN port on the XP Server is manually configured to 192.168.1.65. The LAN port on the XP Server is manually configured to 192.168.0.1 by Internet Connection Sharing. All the other desktops are assigned IP's by the XP Server and are working fine including internet access. The problem (not surprisingly) is that when wireless clients connect to the 2wire box they are assigned IP's in the 192.168.1.x range and are on the other side of the XP Server's WAN port. So... Is there a way to allow the wireless clients through the XP Server's WAN port to connect to the network? Forgive my ignorance but isn't there a way to tell the XP Server and/or the 2wire box to allow communication between the 192.168.1.x and 192.168.0.x networks? Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - ad-hoc network not connecting after reboot i have 2 computers 1 PC with windowsXP pro SP2, which is connected to a router with a cable. 1 laptop with XP pro sp3(i've had the problem too with vista home premium and XP sp2) connected via wireless from an ad-hoc network with my PC the problem is, if i turn off both computers and turn them back on my laptop can no longer connect to the network. it is set to automaticaly connect but it doesn't if i manually connect i see the connecting screen for 5 minutes at 1%, and then it disappears and refreshes the wireless network list without being connected. my PC has no problems connecting. the only way to get my laptop to connect to the ad-hoc network again is by setting up a new ad-hoc network on both my PC and my laptop.     - Sharing a Folder in XP with Vista... I have a users problem on a workgroup between XP and Vista. I can share a folder in XP with Vista, but only through the "Everyone" account. I want to restrict access so that only 1 specific other user can access the files. I have created a users with Identical Passwords: VISTAMACHINE\UserOne (Member Administrators - currently logged in) XPMACHINE\UserOne (Member Administrators - Not currently logged in) I have put XPMACHINE\UserOne as the one with access to the share. But, I seem unable to access the XP Share from Vista using either of the credentials. I can only connect Vista -> XP share if I do all permissions through the EVERYONE account.     - Can I use my wireless MCE PC as a range extender of my WiFi ? I have an MCE PC in my lounge room. It has a Dlink wireless PCI card in it for my connection, via my Dlink router, to the internet. Now, this may become a Dlink specific issue but first I'll pose my question here. Is there any way that I can use the MCE PC to let my Nokia N95 get online ? Essentially I'm trying to use MCE as a range extender for my wireless network. The N95 can't reliably use the router signal as the router is too far from the lounge room but MCE has a high gain antenna and performs flawlessly online. Any ideas ? Thanks very much.     - linksys wireless nic getting bad mac address from router? I have a linksys wireless router, wrt54g 4-port. Two computers connect nicely using d-link wifi cards. The third (using a linksys nic) can't connect. When I first boot the PC (windows xp sp2) it can detect but not connect to the wireless network. Workgroup is correct, router ssid is detected correctly. Then the windows network manager claims there are no networks in range, until I reboot. But there's a weird problem (I think this is the cause): the router Mac address is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxb, (cloned) the wifi card detects xxx.xxx.xxx.xxc. I don't see any way to tell the nic to use a different mac address and the router needs to have the exact address it has because that is the address registered with the ISP. Besides, the other PCs get the address right no problem. This was a working setup until the router was reset. I have been over the router setup and the card setup until I'm blue in the face.     - Remote Desktop Problem I running 3 XP Pro (SP3) computers connected to a wired router and high speed modem. Computer A can run a Remote Desktop connection to either computer B or C. However, computers B or C cannot connect to computer A via Remote Desktop but these computers are able to view the files on computer A using My Network Places. That means they know about computer A. Remote Desktop is enabled on computer A and the Firewall Exception is set to allow this connection. Computer A is a new system I built last month. This was the first time I tried a Remote connection TO this computer and was surprised to find I couldn't connect - I normally Remote to the other two systems from computer A. What am I missing? After I enter the computer name (or IP address) into the Remote and click "connect", the dialog box dims for a moment but nothing happens.     - Can Ping but ... Hi All, I have a network which consists of a server 2003 and 3 client laptops. I am unable to RDP into the server using one of my laptops although i am able to ping the server which has a static IP address of 192.168.1.106. I have checked the RDP connection etc on the server and it is setup to accept incoming client machines etc. I used to be able to RDP using the said laptop but unsure why suddenly it wont allow me to connect.     - Permanently Hiding the "Wireless No Connection" Icon in System Tra I am running XP SP3 on a Dell laptop with wired and wireless nextwork controllers installed. I have noticed that the Hiding Icons feature on the Customize Notifications dialog (Toolbar Properties | Customize) works differently for wired connection then it does for Wireless connection. Example: My LAN properties (Control Panel | Network Connections | Local Area Network | Properties) have the following settings: * Show icon in notification area when connected (deselected) * Notify me when this connection has no connectivity (deselected) Behavior: When the wired connection is connected or disconnected, no icon appears in the System Tray (as expected). My Wireless properties (Control Panel | Network Connections | Local Area Network | Properties) have the following settings: * Show icon in notification area when connected (deselected) * Notify me when this connection has no connectivity (deselected) Behavior: When the wireless connection is disconnected, the icon appears in the System Tray (NOT as expected). In addition, I have selected "Always Hide" for the "Wireless - Not Connected" icon on the Customize Notifications dialog (Toolbar Properties | Customize). Question: How can I permanently hide (not disable) the "Wireless No Connection" Icon in System Tray? I can make a registry entry to disable the both wire and wireless icons permanantely (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7007ACCF-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E} ). However, the wireless icon is useful when connecting to a wireless network and I would like it to behave like the Wired icon by conforming to the settings in the Customize Notifications dialog and the Wireless properties dialog.     - Peer to peer This shouldn't be so difficult! I recently got a new desktop. Rather than spend the hours re-installing everything, I'd like to run from the new computer, but have access to everything on the old one. Not sure if I can literally run apps installed on the old computer by clicking a desktop icon on the new computer, but at least I need to be able to share files. I plugged a network cable into each desktop. Ran Network Setup Wizard on the new computer, created a network setup disk on a flash drive, ran the network setup file on the old computer. Initially the new computer could see the old computer, but I was unable to expand the "plus sign" to view the list of shared drives and got the not available you may not have authority to access message.     - XP Pro and 12 users We have a network with 13 computers on it. Most are Windows 200 Pro SP4, there are three running Win XP Pro SP2. We have a file share on the XP Pro box, and for quite a while have been able to have all 12 systems access the share. A piece of software running locally on each machine accesses the data on the shared drive. Until recently, all is well. Now, the user limit seems to come into play, as we get one machine that cannot connect. Reviewing KB307874 says we can only have 10 users connect, but we have been using 12 for well over five years. I am confused why one would be an issue, seems two would be having a problem. Looking for some initial insight into this...the timeline is what is confusing me. Shared system is XP Pro, two others are XP Pro SP2 as SP3 was just released and none of those patches have been put in, and the remaining systems are Win2000 SP4.     - Could Connect To My Other PCs - Not Anymore I have 8 PCs on my Network and used to be able to connect to them just fine. I just installed SP3 and now can only connect to 2 PCs - the server PC and my son who is running Vista Ultimate (non-SP1). Everyone else can connect to my PC but I can't connect to theirs. Should I un-install SP3 and go back to SP2---or am I missing something else? All the device drivers are working fine. No errors...in fact, SP3 makes my PC fly!     - Printer Sharing Problem with Spousal Implications--Help I have been completely unable to connect my wife's new Vista laptop to a shared printer connected to an XP desktop. Because my XP laptop works flawlessly with the shared printer she thinks I'm just not trying hard enough. I need help. More complete information follows: Both XP machines have SP 2. All machines have automatic updates applied. Printer is an Okidata C5150 color laser printer hosted via USB to a computer I'll call PrinterHostXP, an older Dell Dimension. Printer is shared and there is one shared folder on this computer. PrinterHostXP is an older computer and uses a USB 1 port. My laptop, which I'll call MyLapTopXP is a 2 year old Presario. It has never had any trouble connecting to the printer or the shared folder on PrinterHostXP. Wife's laptop, which I'll call WifeLapTopVista is a brand new Toshiba with Vista Home Premium. This machine can see the shared printer and folder on PrinterHostXP and can edit files in the folder. I can connect this computer to the shared printer through a number of strategies (detailed below) but whenever I attempt to print I get one of two results, depending on how the printer was connected. 1. If I added the printer to WifeLapTopVista as a shared network printer I receive d message saying "Could not connect to shared printer on server". 2. If I added the printer to WifeLapTopVista as a local printer on a TCP/IP port the document will spool locally but after 10 seconds or so the document shows "Error" next to the file name in the print queue with no other information. Regardless of approach the document never appears in the printe queue on PrinterHostXP. I have installed and uninstalled the printer on WifeLapTopVista in the following ways: 1. Using the Oki software installation and navigating across the network to identify the printer. 2. By using the Add New Printer dialog in Vista and selecting a Networked printer. The network sees the printer with no trouble. If I have uninstalled the printer drivers I use the "Have disk" option to install the drivers and have used both the original distribution disk and the latest Oki download version. If I have not uninstalled the drivers, connecting the networked printer recognizes the printer type and uses the correct driver from the last driver install. 3. By using the Add New Printer dialog in Vista and selecting a local printer and then adding a TCP/IP port. In this approach the setup also detected the printer type and used the proper drivers. In addition, I moved the printer to MyLapTopXP, shared it, and connected to it from WifeLapTopVista with the same results--successful connection resulting in the printer appearing in the installed printers folder but the same error dialog when attempting to print. I can connect the printer directly to WifeLapTopVista via USB and it works flawlessly. Okidata has not fielded a Vista driver yet and advises using the XP driver. Any help will be deeply appreciated.     - Lost wireless network connection on laptop My son had his Dell laptop at college and was using their wireless network successfully. He came home last week and tried using his laptop on our home wireless network (w/Linksys router). He said he was not able to always connect so he tried to set up (configure, repair) the wireless connection himself (always a dangerous thing to do). Now he gets no internet at all (IE always goes into 'offline' mode). I've tried to trouble shoot the connection but so far I have been unsuccessful. The laptop can see the wireless network (it shows as available and connected). There is something wrong with the network connection that IE uses but I don't know how to go about fixing it. In the laptop's Network Connections I see 'Lan or High-Speed Connections' with a 'Wireless Network Connection' of connected,firewalled. Also, in the configuration area under connection properties there is (checked) Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing, QoS Packet Scheduler, and TCP/IP. There are other services unchecked such as Client Service for Netware, NW Link IPX/SPX, NW Link Net Bios, AEGIS Protocol, WLAN Trans...     - One computer in peer to peer no longer seeing other computers or being seen I set up a friends peer-to-peer network a few years ago. everything has been working well until recently (an he claims nothing has changed on any machines, ha!). All 4 computers are WinXP SP2. Every computer is seeing all the other computers on the network shared folders & printers. Recently the laptop does not see the other computers and the other computers "see" the laptop but can't connect to it. The laptop does still connect to the internet The laptop can ping the other computers successfully All computers are part of the same workgroup and on the same subnet No viruses or spyware detected on any systems AV and (Windows) firewall have been disabled for testing purposes No other 3rd party firewalls are installed File & Printer sharing is enabled on all computers I do see the laptop listed in the other computers Network Neighborhoods, but get the following message when trying to connect "\\Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The network path was not found" No computers are listed in the network neighborhood of the laptop (including the laptop). If I try to search for a computer nothing is found.     - Networking computers I have a Microsoft MN 700 wireless router that has four computers and a printer connected to it wirelessly. All of the computers are using MS windows XP SP2 and all are on the same workgroup. Each can see each other, share folders and files and each can connect to the internet through the MN 700 wireless router. The router manages all of the IP addresses on this local net within the range of 192.168.2.1 - 254 through its DCHP server. I tried to hook up one of these computers through a wired ethernet connection to the router (the router can accept up to 4 wired connections). I disabled the wireless conncetion between the router and the computer so there would only be a wired connection. When the cable is connected between the router and the computer, the corresponding light on the router lights up and the computer icon for the connection is visible in the system tray on the computer, so the physical connection is there. After doing this and re-booting both the computer and router, I was expecting to be able to connect to the internet, but I could not. I could not see the other computers on my workgroup either. I tried to ping the router from the wired computer, but got the message that a link was not achievable. The IP address of the computer also changed from 192.168.2.103 to 169.254.190.34. I tried to renew the address, but got the message "No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection 2 while it has is media disconnected." For some reason the process is only looking at the wireless connection (which I disabled) and doesn't look at the wired connection. Why is that and how do I get it to accept a wired connection between the router and computer?     - WiFi "Limited or no connectivity" issues (XPSP2) As I understand it, the "Connected" but "Limited or no connectivity" status is active when there _is _an established "physical" connection between the computer and the router - but _before_ the WPA-key has been sent (or acknowledged?). When I shutdown the system it issues Info Msg 4201 "The system detected that network adapter xxx was connected to the network and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter". It is stated elsewhere that the msg is issued when the adapter is "enabled _or_disabled" which indicates that "normal operation" should be understood as "no operation" in this case. This is confusing, at least ;-) Upon startup the same infoMsg is issued twice, 45 seconds apart, but the internet connection does not get up. And concurrent with the second message, a warning 1003 is issued. "Your computer was not able to renew its adress from the network... cancelled by the user... will continue to try" BUT, a) it has a fixed adress already (so it should not be renewed in the first place), b) the user (me) has not interferred in any way (so, what user was that, actually). 43 seconds later it makes another try, which results in Warning 1008, with similar content asbefore "Your computer was not able... semaphore timeout... willl continue to try". 3 second later Dhcp has obviously given up getting the adress over the network and assigned it an entirely new adress of 169.254.75.111 (despite the fixed one, which is different). So now the computer is "Connected" but with "...no connectivity" and the wrong IP adress. I have to resolve this situation by manually disconnecting, and then reconnect again. Upon reconnect the WPA-key is being shown to me (in a sense, because only stars are shown ;-) which I then "OK" and send to the router. After that the link is up. I _assume_ that the problem is that the WPA-key is not sent (or acknowledged) as it should on the automatic connection tries during the boot sequence. So my big question is: Q1: What can I do to make the system establish the fully "connected" connection by itself during the boot. Curiosity questions are e.g... Q2: Isn't there some logical error when the "connected but not connected" state makes the system forget that the IP adress is fixed and should not be retrieved from the network. Q3: Is it really proper to issue a msg stating that the adapter "was connected to the network" and that the system has "initiated normal operation" when in fact the adapter has been disconnected from the network because it was disabled because of the shutdown. Q4:Why can't the system on its own identify this "connected but not connected" situation and re-establish the connection automatically, whithout my intervention? I should stress that this computer has a WiFi network connection only. It does have an Ethernet cable adapter too, but no cable is connected to it and the system makes no attempts to use it (at least none that makes a trace in the event log). Netgear WGT624 V2 (Wireless) IN WLAN Cable modem OUT LAN to XP box OUT LAN to wired hub (see below) OUT to VOIP MODEM (Engin) WIRED LINKSYS 10/100 16 port IN FROM Netgear above OUT LAN to other XP boxes I also have a Compex Netpassage 16 which has wireless and 4 hard ports. I want to be able to use my laptop wireless which is quite away from the Netgear wireless but close enough to one of the XP boxes (say box 2) which is fed from the wired hub. What is my best way to do this? Can I feed the cable from box 2 into the Compex then out of the compex to the wired hub? Would I then be able to get a signal from my LAN to the laptop? Computer crashes each time i connect to home router (Dlink 634m).
Other people can access it however.
I can access other wireless networks also without freezing, just not
home.

Have scanned with AVG but can't pick anything up, any ideas???

What Service Pack level is your XP at? Has this problem always existed? If
not, what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

Everything is updated. Service Pack 3 i believe. As for whats changed,
i really don't know. have been able to access this network last year,
just not this year...

I'm very sorry but this will not be enough information to help you. Normally
when things go awry, one asks oneself The First Question of
Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things worked and the time
they didn't?. Since your problem has apparently existed for a year,
answering The First Question will not be possible.

Since your wireless adapter works well with other networks, here are my
suggestions:

1. Look for updated firmware for the router. Get this from D-Link,
obviously.

2. Contact D-Link tech support.

3. Replace the router.
