brief IP address question (quiz?)
Hello,
An using an Win XP-pro computer and was looking at some internet connection
things. Could I get a few opinions on IP addresses in general, particularly
the last set of digits...
BACKGROUND
PC
I did c:\ipconfig, and it brings something back like...
IP Address 190.188.1.400
Default gateway 190.188.1.4
ROUTER
The router has some settings where it has a fill-in box (default=0) to allow
you to ONLY fill in the last 2 digits, like this 190.188.1.4 [ 0 ]
(it has a default of 0)
QUESTIONS
OK so questions are...
Is the router IP address of 190.188.1.4
the same as 190.188.1.40? _________
the same as 190.188.1.400? _________
the same as 190.188.1.004? _________
And, when the "ipconfi" brings back 190.188.1.400, is that the same as
190.188.1.40? _________
the same as 190.188.1.4? _________
the same as 190.188.1.004? _________
And, is the default gateways always the same (or a variation of ) the OP
address, i.e. is the
default gateway of 190.188.1.4
the same as 190.188.1.400? ___ (if so, why don't they put the 2 zero's here
too?) ____

Remote Desktop locks up local computer
I am running RDP on my local XP pro machine (box 1). I connect to it by
running the remote desktop client on another XP pro machine (box 2) on my
LAN. Most of the time when I log off the remote session I cannot access box 1
from the keyboard, and the screen is blank. CNTL, ATL, DEL does not return
the login prompt. So far, the only solution I have been able to do is shut
down the computer and restart it.
Are there any suggestions I can try to correct this problem?
Thanks,

IE7 Setup Issue
Hello,
I'm trying to set up a PC with Windows XP Professional and I tried to
install IE7 on it. It installed fine, but when I click on the IE7 icon
(after reboot) I can't access the internet at all. The browser never opens.

Protecting shared files on XP SP2 home
Well, I know it *supposedly* can't be done with a password, but I've heard of
ways to do it and I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas.
Basically, there's one computer I want to be able to access the files. It's
OS X Tiger, and will always have the same IP address. All other computers
When I mount a share, it asks for a password, but, like I believe all XP
systems are, any password will open the files. So I just need anything to
keep access to that one computer. I've heard about setting a password on the
guest account, but that doesn't seem possible. Also tried making a rule on
my router's firewall, but that didn't work. Is there any way to set up the
Windows Firewall for this? Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks,

Use a Server or one of my Pc's
Hi
I have 3 PC's that are already Share a internet connection running XP

installed. We want one of the other PC's to run TAS Books as well so
that 2 people can work on the program at the same time. Will it be
easier to buy a server? Would i need to install Windows server 2003?
If so what PC's would need windows server on? Or can i use the third

Access same file on 2 XP home PCs?

XP home
On my second XP box, without the Word document, please can you tell me
how I can view/edit the document on the first box? The machines are
in the same room.
Machine 1 has two ethernet connections on the mobo, one is used for
the internet, the other is free. Machine 2 will have a USB ethernet
adapter device installed soon. Using my very limited understanding
about networks, I'm thinking along the lines of some kind of simple
ethernet cable running between the two machines, but I've heard that

half bandwidth
I've updated my adsl from 2Mb/s to 12Mb/s.
Since that I'm experiencing some problems.
I have in fact +- 1250KB/s bandwidth, tested in other PC's in the network,
but on the my main PC, the Win XP only can deal with 700KB/s tested with one
connection. If I use two or more silmultaneous connctions to the same file I
achieve the total bandwidth. In this Pc I have also Linux installed so I
tested with it and I have the total but not in Win XP. I tried without
firewall and same result. I tried all I know and I am sure that all the
hardware are allright, my feeling is there is something in Win which is
causing the bandwidth crisis but I don't know what is it. Tag: Browser page loads, Protocal activity Tag: 286977

Network Connections dialogue box
When my broadband wasn't working, I used dialup (as you do), and since
broadband 's been repaired, I keep getting a 'Network Connections' window
popping up when I visit certain sites - only in Firefox, strangely, asking me
which dialup connection I want to connect to. The whole web grinds to a halt
unless I click cancel or the red cross.
I've been through every possibility I can think of in the 'Options' part of
Firefox and in the 'Network Connections' set up, but the little window just
will not quit turning up.
It's not affecting the speed of the connection, but is just irritating.
Anyone any ideas? Tag: Browser page loads, Protocal activity Tag: 286973
Offline Folders sometimes work
I have got a very sophisticated probleme with offline folders. I use offline
folders assigned manually. If I assign folders from the folders tree root,
everything is working, but if i want to exclude some subfolders, the wohole
thing is getting weird.
Other files created in totally different subfolders weren´t added to the
offline folders anymore, even if the folder is manually added to the offline
files.
Only adding the new file itself manually does work.
But is useless to say that my collegues and me are adding a lots of files
during the whole day, and i can´t say which of them i should add and which
schouldn´t add.
Can someone solve this heritage problem?? Tag: Browser page loads, Protocal activity Tag: 286972

Printer/File Sharing No Longer Working
I work in a small office. We have three computers (two desktop and one
laptop, all using Windows XP). Due to the layout of the office, the printers
are both connected to one desktop.
We can all connect to the internet with no problems, but as of Wednesday we
are no longer able to connect to the other computers (shared files, printer,
etc).
I have run the network set up wizard multiple times on each computer, trying
to get it to work, but without success.
The computers are able to ping each other, and I have confirmed that they
all have the same network name. File and printer sharing IS enabled. We can
each connect to the internet with no problems (secure network), but they no
longer wish to speak to each other. This is NOT the first time this has
happened, but I was able to get things to work properly before. Now, for
whatever reason, I can't.
Any ideas or suggestions on what I can do to correct this? Tag: Browser page loads, Protocal activity Tag: 286956

Unclear browstat Output
At one time, I only had one XP Pro and one XP Home machine on the LAN, along
with three Win98SE and 1 Win2K machine. When the XP Pro machine would try to
map to any of the older machines, it did so with no problems. When I tried

I have since added another XP Pro machine, and have the same issues. I

NetBios over TCP/IP
Hello,
I'm sorry if my English isn't so good, I hope it's good enough to
explain my problem.
What I have got:
- A LAN with winXP machines behind a router
- The router is connected to the Internet
- A lan drive (samba server) is connected to the router
DHCP is disabled.
When I am in the LAN I can browse the lan drive through NetBT typing
\\landrivename in the address bar.
I want to do the same using a remote PC anywhere over the Internet and a
dynamic DNS.
What I done:
- activated a DDNS service
- configured the router to forward: UDP 137:139 and TCP 139 to the lan drive
I don't know how to tell IE (or other browsers) to use NetBT protocols.
If I type: "myip.ddns.address" the browser assumes it's an http request
and hence uses the port 80. In this case the router administration page
will answer.
smb:\\myip.ddns.address doesn't work as well as myip.ddns.address:139
I'd try to do a request on a port and configure the router to forward on
another one. But I'm afraid I can't do this in my digicom router.
Maybe there is a straight way but I can't see it.
Please, may you help me?
Thanks

Network connection Windows Adv 2000 server and wkstn using xp home

the same workstation, under the other user account it asks me to give a login
and password before connecting to the server. I am no expert with the server
(nor the workstations for that matter). There are several folders on the
server which are shared that I cannot see. I am baffled. Thanks in advance

Increasing the UDP-buffer
Hello together,
I have a problem with my UDP-connection. I want to create a UDP-connection
via an Gigabit-Ethernet-cable. For that purpose I tested the UDP-performance
between two WinXP-systems with netperf, iperf and a self-made test-utility.
The problem is: I got only 150 to 170Mbit with UDP but 420MBit with TCP. How
is that possible? Could this cause by a low value of a UDP-buffer. At any
Unix-system it's possible to adapt this value:
http://www.29west.com/docs/THPM/udp-buffer-sizing.html
How can I do this on a WindowsXP-system?
By the way: while my testings the CPU-usage was at approximately 55% (if
taskmanager works properly) so I don't think that the performance is the
bottleneck.
Can anybody help me?
thank you

What do I need to connect existing LAN to VOIP host?
Our company has an existing network that is hosted externally. We also use
VOIP through another vendor. We would like to bring the network in-house,
but retain our existing VOIP provider. I am completely new to VOIP systems,
and so my first question is - when selecting the various network components
to purchase and install in-house, what do I need to buy or consider in terms
of configuration, so that we will still connect to our VOIP provider?
We will also be replacing the existing T-1 lines that go to our current
network host provider, with fiber optic that goes out to the Internet. Do I
need another dedicated line to go to the VOIP provider? Do I need any
hardware to make all this happen?
Maybe the above are "dumb questions" but I'm completely new to VOIP, so
please bear with me. Tag: Browser page loads, Protocal activity Tag: 286891

Wireless printer problem
I have an HP DJ 6988 wireless printer that works off my home network with a

My wife has added the printer via the Network Printer method.
When she prints to the printer, for some reason it pops up a Preview Box on
my computer and will not print until we click the Continue Printing button
on my printer. When I print from my laptop, I don't get this Preview
pop-up. We do not have the Preview selected on either machine.
In fact, it is difficult to get to the Printer/Properties on her machine. If
we right-click on the printer icon on her machine, we get an error message
about some Service not running. If we double click on the printer icon and
then look at File/Properties for the printer, there is no Preview option in
the General Tab, Printing Prefrences/Finishing dialogue tab.
Any clues?

My PHP web applications need to send emails and therefore i would like
to test it on my development machine.
For that reason i thought that IIS->SMTP component could do the job.
I was thinking to setup a virtual SMTP server but i'm not successful.
Where could i find detailed documentation or tutorials about how to
setup IIS->SMTP to work with apache server and PHP ?
thanks a lot,

create w2k + XP local network
I am having a terrible time setting up my home network since adding a pc
running XP. The w2k machines are fine, but I can't 'see' the XP machine (and
it can't see the w2k machines).
Of course, the 'wizard' is not compatible with w2k. What am I missing? I
know it shouldn't be this difficult. I have searched this site and 'Googled'
this question, all to no avail.
Thanks in advance.

Blocking page loads for ads stalls XP page loads but not in W98.
What is different in XP that keeps asking for the protocols?
