    - Wired connection problem I have a SURFboard broadband modem, a D-link wireless router, and both the PC and the Dell Vostro laptop are running Windows XP. Also running Nortons on the PC and Bitdefender on the laptop. I had E-Trust EZ armor(antivirus and firewall) , and Network Magic also installed on the PC. Both expired, so I opted to uninstall both. NM came off without a hitch, everything from E-Trust stayed after the uninstall, and I finally removed it by deleting it all from C:. Every since I started trying to remove it, I've had connection problems that make no sense at all. I can connect to my homepage(google), enter a search topic, view the webpage, and then when I try to visit another page, or go back to Google, I get the "IE cannot display webpage" message. My connections box shows I have a connection, my firewall shows no blocks, but my PC will not stay online. Through all of this, the laptop I'm typing on now, works fine. I've went through every Wizard program offered by Microsoft, to no avail. I've ran the cd that came with the router, reset the router, and ran any repair programs that are on the PC, and it just keeps happening. The last time I was able to get about 5 pages deep online before it booted me. I'm ready to throw the whole thing over the hill out back. Any suggestions? Tag: LAN Vs LAN Tag: 288380

    - Cannot creater an internet connection I uninstalled a program that itunes installed and suddenly I lost my internet connection. I opened the Control Panel and the Internet Icon was missing. I tried to recreate it using the wizard. I selected doing it manually and when I clicked finish, nothing happened. It was as if I never started the wizard. At first I was getting the Acquiring a Network Address in my Local Network Connection and it would not end.     - Access to the Windows folder on a mapped drive Hello, In order to support a legacy application I have to grant read/write access to the whole shared C: drive of a Windows XP Professional SP2 machine acting as a file server, including the C:\Windows folder. In other words, the clients (which are also Win XP Pro SP2 btw) mapping the C:\ drive on the host machine need to read files in the Windows folder of that machine. Everything is OK except that access to the Windows folder is denied. I understand that this is due to XP's security policies nonetheless. To overcome that restriction, I added an admin-type account on the file server for each workstation that needs this sort of elevated access level. Those accounts are the same case and have the same passwords as their counterparts on the workstations. This, however, didn't make any difference as access to the <mapped_drive>:\Windows folder is still denied. So my question is: In an scenario like this, how do I grant access to the C:\Windows folder on the file server so that the workstations can access the files in it?     - WorkStation Keeps Disconnecting My windows xp work station keeps disconnecting from my file server map drives. It seems that when I logout and log back in and try to access my network drives it tells me that either my username or password is not correct. I try rebooting and logging in again, but it does not work. The only option I have is to change my ip address, and then it works. Can anyone help me with this. Thanks very much.     - Windows Networking Problem caused by ICS? I have an operating network with four XP Pro SP3 based computers, two wired and two wireless on a Linksys router connected to a DSL modem. I added another wired laptop (XP Pro SP3) that I have been using on a network at another job. It used Novel Netware Client for Windows which I uninstalled. I set it up for my local Windows network exactly the same as the others. It uses NAV 2008 as does three of the other computers and one is using OneCare. The Windows and OEM firewalls are off. All the computers are in the same "Ournet" Workgroup. From this added laptop, I can view and access the shared files on the other four computers. I can ping the added laptop from the other computers and ping the original computers from the added laptop. However, the added laptop does not show up in My Network Places nor in "Entire Network/Microsoft Windows Network/Ournet" on the other computers. Even though I cannot see the added laptop, I can use Windows Explorer on the other computers to map a network drive to the shared folder on the added laptop! I have checked settings many, many times, read Knowledgebase articles, and looked in Forums and could find nothing that fixed my problem and made Windows Networking display the added laptop. Any suggestions would be helpful. I did find something unusual that may contribute to the problem. The added laptop is the only computer on the network that shows "Internet Connection" (Sharing) as a Network Connection. I have tried to disable or delete this network connection without any success. I could find nothing that worked in the Microsoft Knowledge base. I have disabled the adapter and the "Local Area Connection" and "Internet Connection" go away until I re-enable the adapter. I set both connections so I could see when they were active in the system tray. "Internet Connection" starts up right after the "Local Area Connection" starts but runs at 8Mh rather than the 100Mh of the Local Area Connection. I have recreated the network with the Network Setup Wizard making sure I indicate that this and all network computers are connected to a router not to another computer. But ICS is still there.     - Static/Advanced Routing I could do a simple thing and get a switch, but there are circumstances that make static routing more ideal - if what I am looking to do can be done. What that is is file and print sharing between computers that are associated with two routers - a primary router/gateway and a secondary router that is behind the primary router. Behind my modem is a router. Behind the router are two wireless computers, two wire-connected computers, and a VOIP phone. Behind that phone is another wire-connected computer. The problem is that this phone acts as a router and so the computer behind it is associated with a different subnet then the computers on the primary router. Is there a way to change this cinsequence through changing settings on the routers so that all computers are able to associate at the level of the primary router? How? I saw that there was a function on the phone to disable its DHCP Server capabilities and a way to apply Static Routing settings with a Destination IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway IP, Metric, and Interface. Is this where the action takes place? Would I set the computer that is behind this phone to use DMZ? Here is some IP info for the main router...     - Is network transfer speed limited by MS patch Yesterday I noticed that my laptop computer network appears to be limited. The laptop has a 100 Mbps connection to a Vista server with a 1 Gpbs NIC and switch. The Vista system is a SageTV server and I use the laptop to view videos using the Sage Client. While tring to view videos my laptop network speed appears to be limited to just over 2.5 Mbps. I then tested network transfers between the laptop and Vista server and they also were very slow, none completed properly. I then installed service pack 3 hoping that would correct the problem, it did not. Today I used my backup system which also has a 100 Mbps connection to determine when the problem occurred. It looks like patch KB947864 kills the network transfer speed on my backup. Removing the patch on the backup system correct the problem. It does not have SP3 installed yet. I tried to correct the laptop by removing that patch, it did not make any difference. The SP3 install could not be removed. I tried going back to previous restore points, none were successful. Can anyone verify the patch KB947864 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Exployer 7 for windows XP) kills their network speed when connecting to a Vista system.     - Force mapped drive not to connect at startup on Windows XP I have a mapped drive on my laptop which can only be used when i am connected to a VPN. On logging in it attempts to logon or connect to the mapped drive and the login hangs for upto 60 additional seconds.     - network not in range I just did a clean reinstall of XP on ONE of my wireless laptops. I can log into a neighbor's unsecure network but I can't log into mine. It shown no signal and when I try to connect it says that the network may be out of range. It is in the same room and my other laptop connects just fine. I tried with and without security. Recently my laptop "lost" the icons of the various computers at "My Network Places" that are part of the home and office networks. I double checked that the various computers were sharing enabled........they were. To my knowledge no network changes were made to the laptop network settings. ????????????????     - Static IP fails to DHCP We're trying to configure a static address on an XP machine. When the machine is restarted it switches itself back to DHCP settings. If we switch it back to static, same thing, next time machines restarted we lose the static address and reverts to dhcp. It's extremely frustrating and I can't find any help on this.     - Ping "awakens" network browsing I have a home network consisting of a desktop and a laptop. I have FIOS internet, the desktop connects via Cat5 and the laptop is wireless with WPA2 encryption. The problem I am having is the 2 computers will lose their connection to each other from time to time, for example trying to access a shared drive on the desktop from the laptop gives you an access denied type of error. If I ping the desktop the connections "wake up" and I can then browse to the shared drive or to shared folders. What do you think the problem is and why does it work after a ping?     - 2 networked pc's one can't access other I have 2 pcs on a lan, both are winxp pro under the same work group etc. Both have their desktop shared. On pc 1 I can go to network places, work group and computers, and double click on pc 2 to access its shares. However, if I do the same thing on pc 2 and try to connect to pc 1, it says it is not accessible or I might not have permissions, access denied.     - On home network 2000 sees all, XP doesn't Forgive the cross post, but am unsure where to go here. I have three computers on my home LAN, two 2000's and 1 XP. Both 2000's can see and share all three machines. Yet the XP can only see one of the 2000s, not the other. Yet the 2000 that the XP cannot see, can see the XP and it's shared drives. It's like a one-way network. Can anyone give me a little guidance as to what they think I need to look at/change so my XP (desk) can see that 2000 (hidden behind some furniture and uncomfortable to work from)? But when i try to do it now i won't get.     - I cannot see my shared printer drive? I have selected file and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks, and share my printer for public. My PC's IP is 192.168.10.10. When I type \\192.168.10.10 under window explorer, I still can see my shared printer drive. When I type \\192.168.10.20, I can see other shared printer drive on my computer. However, when I go to the PC \\192.168.10.20, I type \\192.168.10.10 under window explorer, this IP address cannot be detected, of course, I cannot see the shared printer drive too.     - Dual NIC's in one PC - Internet & LAN Hi, I have a Dell Preceision 960 with two NICs installed. The first NIC is an integrated Broadcom NIC and I want to use it for Internet and remote access via web. The TCP/IP is set for auto IP and DNS. The second NIC is an Intel Pro 1000/GT which has 4 virtual NICs setup on it. One for each VLAN that have their own IP, Subnet and gateway defined in the TCP/IP config. The VLANs to the Intel come off a Cisco switch in a closed network with no internet access. The input to the Broadcom comes from a different hub that has internet access. I can get internet access through the Broadcom if I "disable" the Intel in the Network Connections window but then I lose the data tracking to the apps while it is disabled. Typically when the Network is connected through the Broadcom it has an auto assigned IP of 10.0.0.13. The VLAN IP's, subs and gw's are: VLAN 90 - 192.168.42.108, 255.255.255.128, 192.168.42.1 VLAN 91 - 192.168.42.140, 255.255.255.192, 192.168.42.129 VLAN 92 - 192.168.42.208, 255.255.255.192, 192.168.42.193 VLAN 93 - 192.168.67.10, 255.255.255.192, 192.168.67.1 I need both to play nice so I can keep the VLAN apps running and be able to get internet and remote access (via VPN) when I need it.     - Slow network Hi, The network that i've setup is slow. I've discovered that it maybe to do with the protocols. The protocols on both the server and the client are different. One is ipx and the other is tcp/ip. Which should i be using? What boxes should be ticked in network protocol on the client and the server? Such as "qos packet scheduler" etc...     - Pinging 1394 net adapter using Network Bridge I need to make network bridge with 1394 and LAN adapter PC-B Traffic flows between A to B on Ethernet and traffic between B to C goes on 1394 interface (Firewire) PC-A contain Ethernet card only. PC-B contains both Ethernet card & 1394 interface card. PC-C contains 1394 interface card only. I am able to ping either PC-A to B (Ethernet card) I am able to ping either PC-B to C (1394 interface) I am unable to ping either from B to C (1394 interface) or vice versa after making the network bridge. Do I need to make any changes in Network Bridge after creating it. I have already installed 1394 drivers in PC-C, because 1394 net adapter is not enabled in Device manager. Network Bridge display under the Network adapters as â??MAC miniportâ?? in device manager. 1394 and Ethernet adapter also displaying in device manager under the Network adapters OS: Windows XP with SP2. I have 3 Windows PCs (one XP Pro SP2 and the other 2 Windows Ultimate). I can see all machines from all machines on the home network (Network Places/Entire Network). I can RD into my Vista machines from my XP Pro machine but cannot RD into my XP Pro machine from my Vista machine. I tried looking at secpol.msc but do not understand how to use it. It has several options to set security policies but I do not want to touch those in case they would allow foreign intrusion through my Windows firewall. I have matching user accounts/passwords on each machine and can ping without loss. What is the problem with the Remote Desktop Connection? Thanks in advance for your help.     - Help w/ hooking up 2 computers to a modem I've hooked the modem to an Ethernet switch and the 2 comps (both running WinXP SP2) with CAT5 ethernet cables. First computer is connected fine (your proof is this post) but the 2nd computer ain't obtaining an IP address. The lights on the switch confirm the port is in operation. My ISP said they don't do technical support for Ethernet switches -- that it's a matter of plug and play if it really worked, hence I waste y'alls precious time with this post.     - Domain Profile not being loaded Hi guys, I have a stange problelm. The PC is a notebook with Windows XP SP2 that is joined to a Win 2003 Domain. When trying to log in to the domain profile with the network cable un plugged, it just shows the wallpaper and nothing else. There is no activity on the hard drive as well. If I need to get the domain profile, I have to login first to a local profile, log off and log in back with the domain user name and password. I am not sure what is happenning.     - Web-folder connection causing system slowdown Hi, In My Network Places, I have a connection set up to a folder on a SharePoint Server site. After I boot up, I can click the folder in My Network Places from within Windows Explorer. It asks for my credentials, and then I'm in until the next reboot. The problem is that once I've authenticated, my entire system is slowed down. I'm not sure why that is so, but I thought that an easy fix would be to disconnect (rather than having to reboot or just live with the slowness). However, I can't find a way to disconnect. Right-clicking the folder does not produce any Disconnect option (which does exist on Windows Vista). Disconnect Network Drive doesn't work because I haven't mapped to any drives. Any ideas? Thanks!     - blending? dsl and cable connection to one computer Im curious if the following the can be done. Could i run a dsl and a cable connection to one computer in a way that only requires one network connection enabled yet utilizes both connections? I use my computer for day trading(stocks, options, etc) and need to reduce/eliminate any connection drop offs even for a few seconds. The trouble is the software i use for trading requires a connection license thats about $800 month and only allows one connection to be running at a time for one license. My thought was perhaps running the dsl modem and cable modem into a router and then connecting my computer to that would allow me to log into the trading software such that if say the cable connection would drop off the dsl would still keep the data flowing and vice versa.     - broadcasting (non-static) IP address Hi, I have recently purchased a web camera that is accessible through the internet (thru web server software that runs on a Windows XP PC). I have port forwarding set up on my router so that when I request comes in to the public IP address of my DSL connection on one of the ports used by the web server for the camera, it is redirected to the local IP address of my PC that is running the web server software. It works fine, but my only problem so far is that I do not have a static IP address. Everytime my DSL modem / router are restarted, I get a different public IP address. This would not be a problem because only a few people will be accessing this webcam and I don't mind if they have to use a different IP address each time. If I am home, I just go to http://www.whatismyip.com/, make note of my current public IP address and I send it to the person who wants to access the web cam. The only problem is when I am not home. I was wondering if there is a way I can have my PC automatically broadcast the public IP address so that even if I am not home, I can determine what IP address to use when trying to access the web camera.     - Subnet routing & VPN Hello, 1. Is it possible in some way to remove the routes to the subnet in which the network adapter resides? 2. Is it possible to somehow forward traffic to a subnet trough a VPN connection? I am struggling with the problem of setting up a working VPN in an environment where the local subnet is the same as the destination one. I have googled up some solutions but cannot give them a try due to problems in the above answers. Any amount of manual work before / after enstabilishing a connection will do fine, since I can script it anyway.     - PC Freezes Several Minutes when connecting to Internet I had this problem under XP SP2 but now it seems worse (Lasts longer) under SP3. I am using a Pentium 4 with a 3.06 processor. My motherboard no longer has any BIOS updates. I understand that the code in Microsoft Update causes a problem with my processor and that a BIOS update may be necessary (Not available). What the system does is it FREEZES for several minutes after it makes it's connection to the Internet (I don't have this problem on my Laptop P3 also running XP SP3). I've confirmed it happens only when making a connection to the internet. If I turn off the Router connecting to the Internet I do not have the PC freezing up problem. As soon as I turn on the internet connection the PC will sit in a frozen state (Cannot input via Keyboard, applications, froze...only mouse moves) for several minutes. After several minutes it clears and returns to normal operational state and will work fine after that. I attempted to do a Microsoft Workaround for this problem that I found for SP2 but it does not work for SP3 and I really don't want to downgrade to do the work around. The workaround involves using MS Console on boot and renaming update.sys then running a hotfix KB885626, but when I run the hotfix it won't finish as it says my version of Windows doesn't require it (SP3). I really don't want to downgrade to SP2 to do this fix (Since I'm not sure it will work anyway) and I'm getting tired of waiting several minutes for the system to respond after making it's connection to the internet....Suggestions?     - Networking Laptop and desktop I have a Laptop running XP Professional and the same on the Desktop. The Desktop is connected to a USB hub as is the laptop. Previously there were communicating and I went away on 2 weeks business trip and now there is no communication. The hub is connected to an ADSL I have run the network wizard on both. When I look at network places on the desktop I can see it and the laptop OK. When I look at teh Laptop Network Places I can only see it and not the desktop. I cannot communicate either way.     - xp can see nt but not vice versa? those 2 pcs isolated from LAN and connected with crossover cable,firewalls down, manually assigned 192.168.1.100,101 and nt pc account has some restrictions (however it operated internet ok while it was connected in LAN) Now xp can see nt in workgroup but cant be neither accesed,nor ftp-ed by nt (although it is seen in the same workgroup) Is perhaps dhcp on xp interfearing -should it be disabled at boot via msconfig or is it smth else?     - Run out of IP addresses The subject says it all. I have five Windows 2003 servers, each running various business apps including a Manufacturing Systems, Exchange Server 2003, a separate SQL Server 2005 box. I have roughly 200 hosts, with a variety of print servers, wireless access points etc. I have one ADSL connection, which is the default gateway on all machines. I am running Active Directory on all servers with the DHCP scope ranging 192.168.50.1 thru 192.168.50.254 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 Print servers, wireless access points and the router all have reservations in the DHCP scope. The problem. I need more IP addresses. I am looking for a step by step guide to adding another subnet to the network so that all hosts on the new subnet can speak to the existing servers and share the ADSL connection. today I seen a pc with a master computer browser issue where the pc on the
LAN was getting the master browser msg from a PC on another LAN in another
building in another company!

I have not seen this happen before. Although I was able to simply shut down
the broswer service on this PC I am curious why this happened and if others
have seen this.

no wins

these are basically out of the box pc's. The pc in the other business/office
is a laptop not even on a network.
