I have an AVI encoded in XVID that I want to convert to .wmv
using moviemaker. I can view this file in WMP so clearly I have
the play codec. When I try and import that video into MM2.1
it says I don't have the codec.

Confused...

I just tried using Windows Media Encoder too. It didn't complain
at the time of file selection about the file, but when I started converting
the file it failed with 59 errors (corrupt data).

I don't see how WMP can happily play the file using the codec, but
MM2.1 and WME9 can't handle it.

I wonder how my PMC converter will manage it when I get my PMC
next week.

I don't run into XVID files often but when I do, I convert them to other
AVIs using NanDub from http://www.doom9.org/

The latest versions of VDubMod or AviSynth might do it too but I haven't
checked.... (links on my Setup > Other Software page).

Thanks for that. If the PMC converter fails also I'll have to look
into doing that.

I still find it weird though that WMP plays it fine but MM and WME
can't handle the XVID Files. Same encoder.

Playing is different than decoding for use in a video project... lots of
things play in my WMP but I can't use them in Movie Maker.

You may be more successful with Windows Media Encoder for this conversion.
