Hi, is there any way to save in another file format, preferably mpg? At the
moment I'm creating wmv files and then I convert then to mpg using a program
called tmpgenc, but it seems like a waste of time having to go through 2
encoding processes. Are there plugins available to enable saving to
different file formats? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

I agree that encoding is a very time-consuming process especially if the movie exceeds 15-20 minutes.

Currently, you can create videos in many bitrates in the WMV format. You can also create a video in the bulky AVI format (to save back to a camcorder). However, currently, WMM does not save to the MPEG format. So if you want to continue saving to MPEG, you will have to go thru the encoding process all over again.

Just curious, why would you want to save to the MPEG format? It occupies a lot more space and the video quality is worse than the variable bitrate video of WMV.

Hi, the clips are to play on a DVD player, it can't play AVI or WMV files,
only MPG (or dvd-video of course). I guess I'll just stick to doing it the
way I am.

Btw, how do you get WMM to save in AVI format?

Thanks.

Select "File"
Then "Save Movie File"
Then "My Computer"
Enter a filename and path where you want to save the file
If you only see "Best Quality For Playback" on my computer (recommended)"
then click on "show more choices..."
select "Other Settings: DV-AVI (NTSC)

K4,

If you are burning a DVD, chances are your DVD writer came with a burning software (Sonic MyDVD, Nero, etc.). All of these apps are capable of converting native WMV files to the VOB/MPEG files for the DVD. Or you could use your tempgenc encoder to do that job.

Also, if you have one of those nifty new players that recognizes and plays WMV's that's even better, you can fit in so much more on one DVD with the exact same (or better) quality.

As for saving to AVI, I noticed that someone already posted a reply.

Pat

Also, if you are making a dvd, it is best to use dv-avi files, keeping
everything uncompressed until you need to do it. Quality deteriotates
especially if you compress a compressed file and that is what you are doing
going from wmv to mpeg2
