Unable to save as a Movie File
Hi, I have a brand new Dell Pentium 4 with standard 512 MB of RAM. For the
first couple of months I had no probs with capturing footage off my DVD Sony
camera into moviemaker via Sony capturing and editing program. Now I am
having trouble saving even small movie files. It Hangs and crashes as soon as
I try to save. Checking the Event Viewer it seems that the faulting app is
Movie maker, the faulting module is ntdll.dl, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault
address 0x00018fea.
The Dr Watson debugger also faults, the module faulting is dbghelp.dll,
fault address 0x0001295d. I am not sure if this is connected or symptomatic
of a larger problem.
Any Help or suggestions of where else to look out there?? Tag: video titles & end credits Tag: 46566
Video Compressor/Codec
When needing to convert a video file that doesn't work in Movie Maker to one
that does, you are often faced with having to decide which video compressor
to select in the conversion utility.
For a recent newsletter, I tested the 20 video compressor options that are
in the drop-down list of my new HP notebook... 14 of them produced files
that imported into Movie Maker and worked in a project. 6 didn't.
The 14 that worked made AVI files that varied considerably in rendering
time, file size, and visual quality....
I added a new page to my website.... Importing Source Files > Video > Video
Codecs, and included two charts to show the relative rendering times and
resultant file sizes of the 14 compressors that worked through each of the
testing steps.

Here's what I have, what do I need?
Ok, I have a Sony TRV-280 Handycam and a Dell Dimension 8400 w/ Windows XP
Media Center. My camera came with software (Picture Package) that is not
compatible with my Philips DVD +-RW. Therefore I want to try using Movie
Maker. I am VERY familiar with Photo Story 3, but have never used MM. What
do I need to buy in order to get this party started?!? Do I need to buy a
firewire? Is it simply a cable? How does it plug into your computer?
Through the USB port? I am so confused! I have been at this ALL day!
See my other post from earlier today to see my problem. ("Blue screen, no
movie")
Thanks so much!

Converting MPEG2 to AVI
I want to transfer my old 8mm movies into DVD. I captured one using PowerVCR
II in my Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook. Although Sonic MyDVD and WMPlayer 10
can both play it with no problem, WMM cannot. It posts an error message
(something like "an interface has too many ways to produce an event"). Going
through PapaJohn's website (BTW, wonderful and tremendously helpful site!
thanks a lot PapaJohn) I came to realize that it is a matter of the format.
I'm capturing videos as MPEG2, and WMM won't read them, so to speak. So I
followed what PapaJohn says in his Newsletter # 50 on how to convert them
into AVI files. Downloaded GSpot, VDubMod, and PanasonicDVcodec. But when I
tried to open the file with VDubMod, it wouldn't, and an error message came
up: "MPEG Import filter: invalid pack at position 3: marker bit not set;
possibly MPEG-2 stream." I then went to GSpot to render it (whatever that
is). I won't transcribe the whole output of GSpot now (I have it at hand,
though), suffice to say that the Status came up as "Rendering successful",
and the first line of the log says: "DirectShow claims to be able to play the
file", again, whatever that means.
I tried to use VDubMod with another file, one I had no problems with as it
was captured by WMM, and it worked as in a textbook: resizing, selecting
PanasonicDV codec, saving, viewing, etc. Then again, I understand that WMM
is not your first choice to capture analog videos, right?
Any insight? Tag: video titles & end credits Tag: 46556
Use dig camera to view 8mm tapes?
I am so new to this. I keep coming up with more questions.
I have a new Sony TRV-280 dig. handycam. My old one which used the Hi8 8mm
tapes, no longer works. I want to turn those tapes into DVD eventually. I
keep seeing I should just by a recorder. However, I recently discovered that
my new camcorder will not playback the regular hi8 or 8mm tapes. How can I
even watch my old tapes now if I cannot playback on my new camcorder let
alone record them. AND, is it even possible to make the DVDs w/ the computer
and Camera, not the recorder?
Thanks!

Blue Screen, no movie!?
I have a funny feeling the answer to this question will have to do with that
thing you call a firewire. I am assuming I don't have one. (I have no idea
what it is.) But I will go on to be sure anyway...
I record a video on my sony digital handycam. When I try to use MM2.1, I
click capture movie. The timer on the computer screen is going, but my
camera doesn't seem to be. I stop the capture and save the movie. But there
is nothing but a blue screen. No video/movie or sound. However, when I keep
my camera in record mode, you can see on the computer what my camera sees.
You know, live video, not recorded. So my question is, why, after I go
through the capture process, is there no movie? I can click play and
everything, but all there is is a blue screen.
I have tried using the software that came with the camera, Picture Package
1.5, but it is not compatable with my philips DVD+-RW. That claims there is
no cd in the drive when in fact there is. Can anyone of you fabulous
computer smarties help me out?
Thanks!

Changing Movie Maker - Media Player
Hello,
I am a new user to Movie Maker. I have made a fantastic video, and like many
others, turn the Windows Movie Maker Project into a Windows Media Project. I
have seen many movies that have used Movie Maker and when i RIGHT click and:
Open With > Windows Media Player
I get this message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the
file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
Can somebody please tell me how to turn a Movie into a file which WILL play
on Media Player?

No Audio Capture
Using Movie Maker 2.1. Having a common problem - no audio capture, but video
works just fine.
System Info: Windows XP Pro, SP2. 1GB RAM, 2.93 Ghz processor, 270GB worth
of free space.
Transferring video from old GE VCR. 4 RCA jacks in all - 1 pair audio/video
out, 1 pair audio/video in. Using ATI Theater 550 Pro video card. Card has
jacks for coax from source (in this case, VCR). Also has a jack for
accepting connection from ATI dongle (dongle holds S-video, 3 RCA jacks..red,
yellow, white).
Coax runs from VCR to coax jack on back of ATI Theater card. S-video not
possible; no s-video jack on VCR. Have yellow RCA jack from video out on vcr
to yellow in jack on ATI dongle. Video works fine... Sound is the issue
(sound works great in all other areas...dvd play, mp3, etc). From audio out
jack on VCR to any of the other two possible connections on ATI dongle...no
sound.
I am following up with ATI as well, but wanted to ask here as well...maybe
it's something simple that I am overlooking, and other folks can point to the
connection error I am making.

How do I get this thing off my system? Its a work machine and a test box

resurrect automatically every time I try to delete them. Yet its not an

Audio Problems
I have an analog video camera. I plugged in all the wires properly, but when
I go to capture video, there is only video, no sound.
In the pull down menu for audio devices, there are two options: Realtek AC97
Audio, and Conexant Falcon Audio Capture. With the Realtek AC97 Audio option,
I can select the audio input source, such as Line In, Line In 2, Mono mix,
ect. I've tried all these options and none of them produce audio.
The video capture device is called Conexant Falcon II NTSC Video Capture, so
it would make sense that the audio device would be Conexant Falcon Audio
Capture.
When I select Conexant Falcon Audio Capture, no options for audio input
source are given. But on the screen before the video capture, when I click
next the screen freezes and will do nothing. As soon as a click around a few
times, it says Not Responding and I have to Ctrl Alt Delete out of the
program. I've tried doing this multiple times, and have rest the computer,
but it keeps happening.

1. Unable to capture from the camera
2. If downloaded to computer through USB, if imported to windows movie

But, if edited and spliced at the splice point, it will play a green screen
