Movie Maker 1
I am a new movie maker user, learned somewhat how to use
the last version of movie maker. Downloaded movie maker
2, do not like it as much as the previous version,
especially the storyboard view or the view on the
screen.Have not been able to import files and when it was
configuring my old video files into the collection, it
caused my computer to hang up, had to restart and lost
all my video collections. Is it possible to return to the
previous version and delete MM2. Any other suggestions
for this novice? Tag: software Tag: 6622
NTSC to PAL conversion
I don't have any PAL equipment so I can't just give things
a try to see what works... I friend in a PAL country wants
a VCD copy of a portion of my vacation videos. My final
output from MM2 is NTSC WMV. So in Nero 5.1 I changed
the "resoultion" to PAL prior to burning. Is that all I
need to do? I searched this group and there is a post
says that MM2 has a PAL setting. Should I have set that
prior to rendering my final WMV?
Can I do this conversation with Nero 5.1 or MM2 or both or
do I need additional tools? Would like to get it right
the first time than send junk that won't play on his
machine.
Thanks,

Saving in a different format than WSWMM
I recently purchased a digital camcorder. I received a
copy of movie maker from the Gateway store where I
purchased the camera. I have had a ball playing with the
software, but I need to know how I can save a movie that
I make/change, etc in a format other than the the default
extension of WSWMM? I try to bring up the movie in
Windows Media Player and I can't play it there. It would
be nice if I could make a movie in Movie Maker and then
save it in a format that anybody could use. As it is,
only those with Movie Maker can view the movies.
Any help that can be provided would definitely be
appreciated. I have searched the help files, but can't
get the answer there.

Slightly OT, but worth posting I hope...
Just stumbled across a new publication in WH Smiths (UK).
Digital Video for beginners Volume One. £12.99 - magazine format, hence
found in magazine section, but actually a book with no advertising, hence
hefty price!
It has some articles featuring MM2, especially in the 'getting started'
section, but shed-loads of info about DV in general, including info on
equipment, planning, framing shots, hints, tips, tricks, audio, pro-tips,
effects...
Great for newbies like me. CD enclosed, which I have yet to browse.
Having read some of it I now have to convince my other half than a
Sennheiser external mic is a worthwhile investment!

"WMM cannot be used- required audio not found on your computer"
Well, as they say, when it rains it pours.
When I first dl'd WMM2, the only problem I had (and still
have) was not being about to preview my videos. Last
night, it kept freezing up, it wouldn't let me save a
video, and now I can't get in, period.
I'll start from the the beginning-
Last night, after WMM freezing up on me about a million
times, I finally finished my video and went to save it,
but after about 5 minutes of it staying on 0% and saying
that thousands of minutes were left, I got an error
message that said that I was low on memory or something
to that effect. I can't say exactly what the message
said, because I just gave up after that and now I can't
get back in.
Now everytime I try to open WMM2 it gives me the error
message: Windows Movie Maker cannot be used because the
required audio hardware cannot be found on your computer.
I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what I could do to
fix any of these problems.

Variable Bit Rate Audio
Hi there,
I wonder, has anyone noticed this issue?
I use the paid for version of MusicMatch to manage/record etc all of my
audio, and I have the record option set to 100% VBR and MP3.
I just recorded Magical Mystery Tour from a CD so that I can use some of
the tracks in a video....the video at the moment is 19:52 or so minutes
long and in the time line I could see all of it. So you can imagine the
initial surprise when I dragged the "Magical Mystery Tour" to the audio
track on the timeline and found that it was longer than the video itself!!!
This particular track claims to be almost 20minutes long when in fact it is
just 2:51 ...very odd
But it gets worse...If you play the audio track from the very beginning it
plays properly and at 2:51 it fades correctly to silence but the timeline
indicates that the file continues up to 19:52 and if you leave it all you
get is silence....but if you click anywhere on the timeline the music
starts again from what seems to be a random position in the music, and if
you click the timeline just before the 19:52 position you get the end of
the track as if it was just before the real 2:51 position.
If you select one of these audio tracks within Windows Explorer and look at
its properties you find that each of them is reported to have a different
bit rate, and that is of course correct. Some of the tracks have a bit rate
as high as 570Kb/s
It makes using MP3's recorded in this manner very hard to use.

movie maker stops playing after 3 mins 23 seconds
I record TV programs in MPEG 4 on an SD card on a
Panasonic DVD recorder (DMR-E100H). I then insert the SD
card into this notebook PC (Sony Vaio, 256 mb ram, 1.2
CPU, XP). I can import the file into Movie Maker 2 and
WMP but, after playing the file perfectly for exactly 3
mins 23 seconds, it then stops. Does anyone know why this
happens and how the problem can be fixed please so that I
can view complete films off the SD card in Movie Maker ?
This problem does not occur when playing the file in
Arcsoft Video Impression. Help please, would be most
appreciated. Tony Tag: software Tag: 6593
MM2 exits when previewing clips - weird!
One method I use to preview clips is to double click the clip icon - one
double click will start it, another will pause it, another will restart it
and so on.
If I'm playing one clip I can immediately jump to another clip preview by
double clicking that clip's icon. If I do this several times in a row MM2
exits! There's no knowing exactly when it will exit, that bit seems to be
quite random.
I've checked the Problem Solving -> Acceleration and Codecs page of
www.papajohn.org but I don't believe that the solution's there. I don't
encounter the shutting-down problems that other people seem to get when
adding transitions, etc.
My guess is that it's just a plain old bug in MM2!
Clip source file is DV-AVI captured by MM2 on a defragmented non-system NTFS
partition on 7,200rpm drive. System is P4 2.8GHz HT with 512MB RAM - no
performance issues.

Saving as DV AVI file
Hi everyone
I'm a little confused
I was wanting to create a VCD with movies I had made accessible via a menu
system (like special features on a DVD you hire or what Ulead DVD Picture
Show 2 produces)
When I save from MM2 as a Windows Video Audio File, well the new photo story
wont accept the video files & allow me to add them.
Some kind person in this newsgroup suggested I save a DV AVI, which I assume
will work- (if I use Ulead DVD Picture Show 2) - Anyway - the problem is
this : Each minute of DV AVI is something like 178 megs - so how could I
fit
anymore than say 3 to 4 mins on a CD even if this process is to work?
I assume there is a very easy work around that I'm just not picking up on.
Any help you can offer will be very, very appreciated.

Capture device problems
Hi
I can operate my Canon cancorder on my dell laptop via the
IEEE 1394 cable, stop, play, rewind etc... but when it
comes to pressing record it comes up with error:
"Either your capture device is in use by another
application, or the output from your capture device is not
recognized by windows Movie Maker. Please close any other
applications that use capture devices, or change your
device settings to output to a supported format"
Every other program is closed, i've tried changing my
device settings but it just brings up the play, stop
button etc which control the camera just fine from the
computer and gives me no other options other than Canon
DV - which is correct!. Its the record/capture that
brings up the error...
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Can't capture video
I am very new, as in today. I have a Sony Digital 8
camcorder. It came bundled with MGI VideoWave III SE. I
also have Windows Movie Maker. I am using a Dell

came with the Sony that I use to connect.
I press play on the Sony, with it in VCR mode, and see
playback on the Sony display screen.
On my computer screen, with VideoWave open, I do not get
any video, and the only option to click on is "Audio." I
did install USB drivers off the cd also.
I also have tried using Windows Movie Maker which came
with XP, but no luck.

'Clips' do not auto-generate
When I capture Hi8 video as a .wmv file (via a Canopus
ADVC100) the video is split into clips during the post
capture processing. However, when I capture the same
video as a .avi file the video is never split into clips -
-even with the 'split' option selected. Also, after the
capture is completed, right clicking and selecting
the 'split' option does not work either --it goes through
the motions of creating clips, but the "Clips Created"
count remains at 0.
What is the reason for the different reactions to the two
different file types?
Is there a way to have clips created without having to
manually split the video?

Editing Question
I'm a newbie (so bare with me)....
I have 2 individual AVIs. The movie I want to create will have some of the
1st, some of the 2nd, some of the 1st, etc. (i.e. mixed in with each other).
I guess my question would be: What is the easiest way of getting the
'piece' I want out of the AVI into the timeline? In my playing over the
weekend it seemed like I had to adjust the handles on the clip when it was
on the time line then delete it out. It seemed very cumbersome and was a
pain to use when the piece I wanted was in the center. Am I doing it the

Save a .wmv file after trimming, without re-encoding??
This involves the same project I just discussed in another post, but a
different problem I had.
After encoding the file (ripped from DVD) to .wmv (using Windows Media
Encoder), I discovered that an extra hour had been added to the video! At
the beginning of the video, it just stays stuck on the first frame for an
hour, before starting the actual movie. The total film length (on the .wmv)
is exactly an hour longer than the original film.
Strange, anyone know why that might have happened?
Regardless, easy enough to cut off that hour in Windows Movie Maker, to set
the beginning trim point where the real movie starts.
The problem is, what to do then? Of course, I want to save the .wmv with
that change, with the extra hour trimmed off. But when I click on "save
movie file", it looks like it wants to re-encode the whole movie, asks me
about encoding options, etc. I do not want to re-encode the movie, just save
it as presently encoded, with that extra hour deleted. Is there any way to
do that, to save an existing .wmv file which had been altered, without
re-encoding it? Or is that the only way to do it?
Thanks again for your help. Tag: software Tag: 6512
Adding subtitles to a .wmv??
In this case, a movie from a DVD which I bought and own, but want to also be
able to watch on my PPC. I was able to rip the DVD files with DVD decrypter,
and convert the video to a .wmv file, and the audio to a .wma file (both
formatted for PPC). It looks like I can stream the audio and video together
using Windows Media Stream Editor.
I was finally able to rip the subtitles too, into a .sub file. But I cannot
see any way to convert that into a format accepted by the Windows Media
Stream Editor, which seems to only open wma, .wmv, and .asf files.
How can I merge those subtitles in the .sub file with the .wmv file?
I appreciate your suggestions. Thank you. Tag: software Tag: 6508

Muting the sound on a video clip, so only the audio clip sound plays
I am able to change the balance between the sound from
the video clip and the sound on the added audio/music
clip, but only by changing the balance for the entire
project. I have a few clips in my film where I want to
override the sound that was originally recorded with the
video, and have only the sound form my added audio clip
play.
If I keep my audio levels in the middle (this function
seems to effect the entire project) and increase the
volume of my added audio clip, this drowns out the video
sound...but it's very loud and distorted.
If I put the audio levels all the way to the audio/music
side...those few clips are fine...but he rest of my film
is silent.
Am I missing something, or is this just a limitation to
the software? Tag: software Tag: 6499

Video Quality is horrible. What can I do ?
Hello all,
I am new to the world of video editing. I have a Sony Mini DV camcorder
that I have been using for a while now. When I watch videos directly from
the Mini DV on my TV the video is great. No jaggies or anything. I
captured some video using the DV-AVI (NTSC) settings in WMM. I added a
Title, some scene transitions, and credits. I saved it to my hard drive as
DV-AVI. Now when I watch it in Windows Media Player the video looks
horrible. There are jagged lines all over. Especially when a lighter color
meets with a darker. What am I doing wrong here ? Since these are all
digital files I am working with I don't see how I could lose quality. I
have VHS tapes that look better than what I have as the outcome of capturing
and editing this current video. Am I doing something wrong or is this just
the current state of amateur video editing ? Would I get better quality
results using something like Adobe Premier instead ? I wanted to put this
on a DVD, but the current quality of the video wouldn't be worth it.
Any ideas,
