Greetings Papa John!
Your help has been immeasurable over the last 2 weeks - thank you! Tricky programme but the results are well worth it. However, I am now unable to get my saved movie to play back on the DVD player or on my PC. The file was saved first at high quality video (cutting the project into pieces and importing the videos) then saved as DV-AVI (pal). I then used the TMPGGnc to convert the file to mpeg. Now, it can't find the required codec to play back on my PC as an Mpeg (I have reset the internet security levels) and it certainly will not play back on the DVD player. I have used Sonic Record Now and I have tried Nero savind as a VCD. Any ideas?

Hi Michelle,

I'm reading your posts and seeing more than one issue. Let me ask a few
questions:

- if your final saved movie is a DV-AVI file (PAL), does it play on your
computer? or are you just referring to your MPEG files from TMPGEnc?

- I haven't used Sonic's Record Now! reading info about it on Sonic's
website shows it is aimed toward those who are making music CDs, not movie
discs (DVDs, SVCDs, VCDs)...

- I've only burned a few VCDs and found playback pretty spotty on standalone
DVD players, both older players new ones too.... it'll play fine on some but
not at all on others....

- And playing a VCD on my computer is sometimes pretty tricky. If I put a
PhotoStory VCD in my drive and open WinDVD to play it, I have to manually
drill down through a couple levels of folders to find the DAT file and open
it. Then it plays fine.

Hello Papa John
The Dv-AVI will play on my computer but not the converted mpeg. The message that comes back is that the PC cannot access the correct codec and suggests that I adjust my security settings. I have adjusted my security settings and still no luck.
I understand when you say that the replay of these VCD's can be ropey on a DVD player but I need to get mine to DVD and then copy it to VHS format. I have also had a look at the Sonic website and agree that it appears I have been sold the incorrect software. The Nero webiste - is there any downloads there that I can use perhaps?
Best regards
Michelle

Is it an MPEG2 ? Then you need a codec to read it. Download the trial
version of WinDVD and see if it works.

Most VCD issues are down to menus. Try making your vcd without any menus.

The www.DVDRHelp.com site is probably your best resource in helping you
figure it all out.

I've used so few of the options that it's hard to make recommendations....
the pages of my site in the CD and DVD burning areas have posts about the
products that different people have use, along with links to various
websites.

The people I know rate the Sonic and ULead brands pretty highly.

I can offer support for PapaJ's ref to Ulead; have no
knowledge of Sonic. Overall, I think Uleads products:
-- Have a steeper learning curve for its higher end
products (eg MediaStudio Pro), but at the same time it
provides a flexibility and feature list that most would be
hard pressed to describe in words.
-- On the other hand, its programs are modular: You can
buy, say, just one component of MediaStudio Pro, one being
the MovieFactory, which grabs an MEG and lets you Author and
then burn a DVD, the authoring being quite caqpable but
poorly documented for a newbie.
-- Ulead's component prog;rams aren 't so hard to learn,
Individually, they are much easier to use and understand.
I would highly recommend Ulead, but N OT over any other
brand simply because, other than MM2, Media Studio Pro is my
only relevant experience. I tried another I won't mention
and it was a pathetic, expensive piece of feces compared to
Ulead's products.
-- It's not for the newbie exactly, but I do think MM2 is a
good intro to being able to use and learn Ulead.
-- For me, Ulead's biggest draw is all the bells &
whistles, its ability to be turnkey, and read and work with
about any movie or audio format that there is. Until I hit
the having to convert-before-edit problems with MM2, I
thought it was quite capable albeit limited in features.
If you're technicalloy inclined, owever, MM2 and VB
Studio.NET for instance offer a plethora of possibilities.
For the non-techie though, the limitations of MM2 aren't all
that serious, and it's a fantastic familiarity tool. I've
recommended it to three people and they are all pleased and
happy with making SVCDs.

Hope that helps a little!
