In Windows Media Player the *.mpa extension is for movie
file just same as *.mpeg. However, in the WMM2 .mpa is
classified as an audio file. It is impossible to
edit .mpa movie files. Was this a mistake by MS or a ploy
to make us get confused and frustrated? May be because it
is free. Any wiser comments to help this situation are
welcome.

An MPEG2 video (MPG) can have both the video and audio together in one file,
or it can be split into separate video (MPG) and audio (MPA) files. You and
the software that you use get to make those decisions.

When I import files into Sonic's MyDVD and save a DVD project, it makes an
MPA file and an MPG from each imported file.

When I use TMPGEnc to take the separate files from MyDVD and make an AVI
file to use in MM2, I have TMPGEnc put the audio and video together into one
AVI file.

It depends on what you are doing and how. It's not Microsoft choosing. But,
yes it can be a confusing and frustrating area. One you'll have to learn in
order to do movies.
