    - AVI Sound problems Hi! I followed a previous advice regarding burning moviemaker movies onto DVD by making them into AVI. But there is one issue; when I make them into WMV they have crisp sound quality but when in AVI the soundquality is drasticly decreased.     - AVI capture When I try to capture in WMM 2.1 from a DV camera connected by Firewire to the PC, the camera is recognized by WMM, I have selected to save the capture as an AVI file. The capture process appears to working until I stop the capture and click the Finish button. At this point I get an error that reads "Abnormal program termination". The error message has an OK button, when clicked WMM shuts down. If I do the same exact capture except set the capture to be a WMV file every thing works fine.     - Need help with saving movie to a DVD I have created a movie project in Windows XP Media Center Movie Maker; however, everytime I try to save it to my computer to create a DVD, it appears as if it is saving (takes over 30 min.), and once complete I get an error message telling me a recordable CD drive was not detected. I have a single slot on my CPU which is for CDs, DVDs, reading and writing, so I believe it saves to the computer first then copies to the drive. I am using a blank DVD-RW. I turned off the Nero video filters in the event they were not compatible with Media Center. I've tried 4 times, and I can't seem to make this project a movie! Any advice? Thanks!     - windows 2002 home edition I would like to have some insight as how this edition works. We have the DVD player, but it will not play, even though when i go to programs, it all looks fine. I am not knowledgable at all, so please, forgive me. I just need to understand a few things. How is it that we have virus scan? I thought it comes with any Microsoft program.     - Trying Again ... MM2 Hangs during Capture Ok, here's my problem. I have a Gateway 3 gHz 512RAM computer running Windows XP media edition. I have a JVC GR-D270U camcorder (and even a new Belkin Firewire to go with it all). After I get the video onto the camcorder, I follow all of the instructions for firewire transfer (turn on computer, turn on camcorder to playback function, plug in firewire) and the computer immediately recognizes the camcorder, brings up MovieMaker (version 2). I have tried to capture both automatic and capture specfic times to no avail. It almost always starts fine, but within 5-6 minutes of playback, the capture screen freezes as does the counter (and the capture itself ends at this time). The playback controls for the camcorder (on the capture screen of MM2) work but no video is being captured. It also occurs using WinDV. The Gateway has SP2 installed and I am unsure of the firewire card as it came with the computer. This should be simple...but it isn't turning out that way. Any ideas? Tag: add music Tag: 36287

    - Transition problems Hi! There's this movie which I have worked like 40 hours with and I need to have it on DVD. So, I first make it into a regular wma file and then I convert it to avi using a shareware software called "Fx Video Converter" (because none of my dvd making programs will accept wma as a format). But when I've done this one of my transitions is ruined. It's a place where I first have a completely black picture and then I put in one with a flashing text together with music. It works when it's a wma file, but when I change it the text that is suppose to be flashing starts to show, slowly fading, several seconds before the moment where it is suppose to appear and thus ruines the effect of surprise. I am capturing film from my Samsung DV camcorder onto MM as avi footage, but when I play it back, the video goes too fast.     - Question about using Nero Hi, I am new to this forum, and to the use of Nero. I just got this new computer so I could make family DVD's from my DV camera, and my new computer has the Nero program. When I try to make a DVD it keeps giving me a message that I can not view it unless I pruchas a plugin for $24.95. I am wondering it it is worth it to do this, but feel a little cheated that the computer came with the program, but now I can not view anything I make until I buy the plugin.     - Compression parameter settings Hi, I'm just getting into video and DVD terminolgy etc. and am having difficulty finding reference to the effect of various compressing parameters. I use TMPGEnc to compress mpg files to a size that will fit onto a DVD, and following the "Help" suggestion I use CQ in the rate control mode, this gives me various parameters to set for the compression routine. I am trying to understand the effect of these settings, so ran a series of test compressions leaving the min. bit rate at 0, not enableing the padding minimium, and leaving the spoilage parameters at the default setting of 0 on P pics and 20 on B pics. I then compressed the same mpg file using quality 100, 80, and 60 against a maximum bit rate of 8000, 7000, 6000 and 5000 and noted the resulting file size as a percentage of the original. This gave me some indication of the size reduction I could achieve using these parameters. My questions are, 1) Should I reduce the quality in preference to the bit rate, or reduce the bit rate and leave the quality as high as possible, or reduce them both in proportion to achieve the percentage size reduction I require? 2) Is there a minimium value of quality or bit rate I should avoid going below as it will noticably reduce the resulting video quality? 3) Should I start fiddling with the other parameter settings?     - Audio lost when converting file format I cannot edit or add movies in mpeg format to the storyline, so normally I convert them to wmv format using Windows Movie Maker. However, I have this series of clips that are in mpeg format, that somehow don't have a separate audio track when viewed in the timeline. Attempting to save created movie to AVI-NSTC format as I've always done in the past. I can't store full avis, so I am downsizing my moview to use wmv. I'll play them on the pc, occasionally make a VCD or VHS tape, and rarely make a version for a PDA. What should I store my master in if I choose to use a lossy format - 720 by 480 high quality NTSC or 640 by 480?     - DVD burning My thanks to those who have responded to recent questions about writing movies to DVD. In an earlier post I mentioned using my Hauppauge card to convert VCR tapes to MPG files (VCD format). My mistake was I wrote these videos to a VCD MPG format for burning to a regular CD. I should have used the format that would allow burning to a DVD. Today I found that Ulead's Movie Maker will take those VCD MPG files and write them to a DVD without any special effort to convert them to another format first. I burned five small files to the DVD as an experiment. They played with no problem in our DVD player. However, when I tried to write an additional five files to the same DVD I was told by the Ulead program that the DVD was not empty and to insert a new disk. Being a novice in this field, I thought it was possible to continue to write to the DVD until it reached its potential capacity. Apparently this is not true? Could someone comment on this please. Can you make only one pass at writing files to a DVD? Or is it somehow possible to write addition sessions to the DVD? Perhaps someone familiar with Ulead could help here.     - Saving movie problems, even after reading PapaJohn's stuff Alright, I've got a problem with saving the movie file as an DV-AVI. The file is almost 2 hours long (I know it's long). However, I thought I had enough RAM and CPU for the job. I'm running a Dell 8300, 3.2 Ghz Extreme Edition, 1 GB SDRAM, 120 GB Primary HD, 300 GB Hitachi Deskstar Secondary HD. The file stopped responding 3 times, anywhere within the 95 to 97 percent finished range. The estimated completion time always is 310 (i think) minutes. After reading the stuff here and at PapaJohn's site (and the DV site) I've adjusted the page file to max (forgot actual number). Also my Commit Charge (K) in the Task Manager is at: Total: 574264, Limit: 4095876, Peak, 646056, so I should have MORE than enough memory. CPU usage very rarely goes up towards 89 percent and is generally in the 55 to 60 percent range. The only thing I haven't tried is breaking up the parts of the movie. I don't know how many transitions and effects I've made, but they're many. Is there any other thing except having to break it up that I still need to do? Any help would be much appreciated.     - Getting video to DVD I HAVE THE MOVIE MAKER THAT CAME WITH MY DELL 8400. I WAS TOLD THAT THE SOFTWARE WON'T BURN TO DVD. SO I SAVED IT ONTO HARD DRIVE.     - Capture problem again Really need some advice............... Trying to capture from a JVC DV camera connected by Firewire to a ADS Pyro A/V Link box which is connected to the PC by Firewire. The camera is recognized by WMM. When I try and capture in AVI the capture process appears normal until I hit Stop and then hit Finish. sure... music goes on the other track... you can add it and position
anyplace you want... use the timeline view of the project.
