    - MM records blank files Hi, I have an Avermedia AverDVD EZMaker card that I use for transferring video from analogue VCR to disk for editing and burning to DVD. Sound and video show in the capture preview, but when I start capture the file size shows as 5kb, and the timer stays at 0. When I end capture and 'Finish' an error message pops up saying that the device is not responding. The saved file is blank, no sound or video, but runs for the approprate amount of time and is greater than 5kb. This is a recent problem, it used to all work fine.     - Movie Maker Crashing I have a laptop and use a fire connect for notebooks afw-1430a ieee 1394/firewire cardbus. When I try to transfer video from my sony 8mm digital handycam to the laptop via firewire and windows movie maker it freezes the entire computer. I can't even turn the computer off properly.     - Enable DMA transfer I am uploading video from my old 8mm camera using USB Videobus II. The picture I am getting is a bit rough and the installation manual says I should enable DMA transfer for hard drives to improve the quality. I don't know how to do this.     - MM closes when importing video When I attempt to bring a video into MM by using "Import into collections" and open the folder which contains the videos, MM closes.     - wmm crashes immediately I upgraded my videocard from a Matrox g-400 to an Invidia Geforce 6600 card. Since then, I am unable to successfully launch wmm. I consistently get a "Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close" error. exception Info: Code 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000 Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address 0x0000000060cbb2af etc,etc.... I have a PIII 1.13gHz w/512 mb, 440watt ps, 2 150gig hds on 2 different ide controllers. I have several other videocentric programs, including Vegas 4,DVD Architect 1.0, Muvee AutoProducer 4.1, WinDV 1.2.3, Bluff Titler, Ulead Cool 3D 3.5, Title Deko, etc. The only impact is losing the ability to run WMM, all other programs play nice with my new Video card. I have the latest drivers. I was told on another forum that this is a known issue with Geforce cards, which suprises me becuse they are currently more mainstream than my former Matrox board. Is there any info on what, short of giving up on WMM (no great loss, but there are some useful affects and filters I will miss) or changing back to my older Matrox card (which is MUCH slower in 3D, and does not have T&L, and Ansiotropic filtering, etc.?)     - Importing Pictures When using the Movie Maker program, I have imported pictures from "My Pictures" file (mostly scanned pictures). When I do, the pictures in "My Pictures" files multiply 83 times within the file folder. This creates a huge issue when you have about 200 pictures in a folder and it somehow copies them all 83 times each creating thousands of duplicate pictures. When I try to delete them as a group, it multiplies again. So I have to delete them one at a time. What do I need to do to keep this from happening?     - Can't Play Clips - Preview is Dead! I am a new user to Movie Maker and am having problems with the clip playing facility. I place a clip (even Microsofts own sample) into the timeline but the controls of the preview area are completly dead. I cannot even use the drop down menu to play the clip. Is there some problem with corrupted code or application extension. I have tried to find a way of downloading a new version, but cannot as it is part of SP2 and I cannot find how to download it separately. Also, Movie maker does not appear in the list of Programmes when the control panel Add/Delete Programme facility is activated, so I can't even uninstall it. Any ideas how I can get it to work?     - AVI to VHS tape for grade school class project How do we output an avi file onto a VHS video tape? My fourth grader told me today (last minute) he needs to bring to school a VHS video tape of his verbal book report as a 60-second "commercial". I easily snapped the one-minute video from my Nikon CoolPix camera which saved the 18 MB AVI file onto the compact flash card. But I'm stuck at this point! I don't now how to get this AVI file onto a VHS tape from my Windows XP IBM A31p laptop. I searched this newsgroup but didn't find the question already answered by anyone. I tried playing the AVI file in Media Player Classic, version 6.4 while the firewire was hooked to a borrowed Pinnacle "movie DV" digital to analog converter which itself was hooked by 3 RCA cables (red, white, yellow) into the VCR input jack - but nothing was coming into the firewire PC output. I think I have all the equipment I need but I have no idea how to 'force' the AVI file to go out the firewire output of the IBM A31p laptop. Maybe the Pinnacle Studio 9 software disk I borrowed might help? Or maybe Windows MovieMaker? Or MediaPlaye? I just don't know. Can you point me in the right direction soon? What program would play the AVI file and push it out to the firewire which is hooked to the Pinnacle MovieDV digital to analog converter so that I can then record the one-minute AVI file onto the VHS tape via the three RCA jacks on the VCR? This then re position changed the position of titles/comments on other clips so i had manually adjust all or remove the inserted clips., is there not some way to anchor title comments on a clip so if you add transitions or insert more clips existing editing is preserved.     - Photostory 3: Am I about to go about this the wrong way?? Oh, and that ffdshow codec problem. And a P in P question! Apologies if in wrong place, I thought there was a PS3 group. What I want to do is cut together a natty little video of last night's xmas bash pics - I have a great idea in my head, but it involves rapid and accurate cuts to the music, which doesn't seem possible in PS3 like it is in MM2. But then in MM2, you can't do the nice pans and zooms round the photos that you can in PS3! Bearing in mind this is just a bit of fun, what's the speediest way to resolve my little quest? PS - while I'm here, I find the ffdshow codec very useful, and it's been fine with everything else, but it kills PS3 when importing mp3 music. Is there a way round this without uninstalling before, and re-installing after using PS3? PPS - Without learning something too big, I'd like to insert a small "side by side" video, which I can't do with simple P in P, because I need 2 timelines to cut n match.     - Unable to record movies and sound problems I get a very odd behaviour of MM: It's impossible to record movies on disk even with verys small clips. The error message tell to check disk space then the file to write is 60Kb! An other problem is the defect of sound when I try to make movies longer. The sound is correct for the clips but it does not play on the final movie. I suspect a problem with codecs because thes pb appears after loading codec to play divix in WMediaPlayer.     - Frame rate choppiness after deinterlacing I captured to DV-AVI and it is heavily interlaced when viewing on PC (as expected). When previewing through software such as WMM and Nero ShotTime, however, the playback appears progressive (so I asssume deinterlacing is done in realtime), but the framerate appears just as I would expect. After encoding and deinterlacing however, playback is just not up to standard - it is choppy and seems more like a slideshow. On pause, the image looks as though two frames were mixed together. Is there any way to emulate the far superior playback of DV-AVI through WMM and Nero after encoding. Resultant file size not too important. I would like the video to be progressive, though.     - Sony VAIO and WMM Can't Detect Capture Device Hello people, I need some help. I have a job I need to get done and soon with video and need to capture VHS tape to WIndows Movie Maker. Here's the thing. My computer rocks in terms of a lot of multimedia stuff. I am a big fan of the Sony VAIO. I have a number of software packages, . . from Adobe Premiere to Sony's ClickToDVD to Windows Media Center. I can capture video with ALL of them and do whatever I need to do. But the person I am trying to finsih this for is requesting it be done in Windows Movie Maker so that in the future he can rework the video if need be with his own Windows Movie Maker by having the working file archived for his own use. But when I try to capture video using WMM, the VCR doesn't get recognized. I switch over to one of the other software packages I mentioned above and no problem. Go back to WMM, and nothing. I know I could use the other software to capture the video and then import it into WMM, but that is not what I am looking for. Streamlined process is key. Someone please help me out. The Sony VAIO has two different capture cards, one in the back and one in the front for ease of use. If it helps, here is the model number, it is PCV-RZ54G. Help please.     - WMM analog capture nightmare nVidia FX5900/256MB (Chaintech) w/ VIVO, in A7N8XD-r2 mobo, 1 GB RAM, 80GB HDD, from Sony video 8mm Handicam using Tandy adapter to svideo. Center 1/3 of frame is white out (horizontal) in spurts of from 9 seconds to 1+ minutes across a 45 minute capture. WMM monitor capture monitor window never shows white out during the capture. It appears in playback. Have viewed saved clip in WinDVD Creator 1.0 and in Windows Media Player 9 and white out is appears in playback there. Have a 3GB pagefile split across to logical partitions of HDD. Have a jpeg snapshot of a frame as example, but can't attach. . . . Have tried different nVidia display drivers - no difference. Have tried different nVidia WDM drivers - no difference. I doubt this is just a WMM issue, but do not know where to turn next. Hate to think I ramped up this hardware (256MB graphics adapter with VIVO) and went all nVidia and nForce for compatibility to no avail. Any suggestions appreciated.     - Please HELP!! I have just finished editing my home movie and when I attempt to save the movie file as DV-AVI it sais estimated space required 35598.75MB. Does this equate to nearly 36 GB's.     - Help - Can not save to DV Camcorder I'm pretty new on Movie Maker 2.1, but have been able to put a 33-minute movie together that I'm now ready to save. I previously saved a short test movie successfully, and even burned it to SVCD and DVD. But now, since my movie is too complex, I can't save it to my computer - at all - without dividing it into more manageable segments. I am desperately hoping I can save back to my DV Camcorder, but... MM is giving me an error saying that my camcorder is not connected to the computer. It is connected through the IEEE 1394 cable, turned on and in playback mode - and I can even capture video into MM - just not save from MM to the camcorder. I have discovered that MM2 cannot import MPEG-2 files, despite the claim that
these files are supported. Does anyone know if microsoft has any plans on
fixing this issue? Until then, can anyone recommend a user-friendly product
to use instead of MM2?

I haven't tried it, but I saw a pretty positive post yesterday at
SimplyDV.com for www.womble.com - software that edits MPEG-2 files directly.
