There's a number of things it could be. See the Problem Solving > Can't Save
a Movie page of my site.

Or you could try and help them...

If you have any MP3 or MPeg files in your project you should consider
converting them to WAV or AVI. That will remove several potential problems.

You should also consider downloading the full versions of DirectX ver 9.0b,
Windows Media Player 9 and Movie Maker.

You should install these files in the order mentioned and do a reboot after
each install.

If you still have problems do please come back and ask for more help

John's advice is good :)

But, if that fails, you can also post the Watson bucket number. MS tracks
crashes that actually get reported, and sometimes that information is useful
in determining setup problems or 3rd party integration (read: CODEC) issues.

To get the Watson bucket number:
1. Use Movie Maker to generate the crash. When you are prompted to send
the data to MS, do so!
2. Immediately after sending the data, go to "Control Panel" |
"Administrative tools" | "Event viewer". This will launch the event viewer
for your system.
3. In Event viewer, choose "Application" node of the tree.
4. Sort the data by "Date", and scroll to the most recent entries.
5. Look for entries whose "Type" is "error" and have red "X" icons.
Double click on them to "open" them.
6. One of the last (most recent) red entries should have a "bucket
number" in the description field.

Reply to this post with the bucket number, and we'll see if there's anything
useful in the mini-dump to help figure out the problem you're experiencing.
It might turn out to be a wash, but hey -- we won't know unless we try :)

Hello there,

It is an unfortunate consequence of the programming used when creating
Movie Maker that it does more often than not crash with no warnings of any
sort and very rarely gives the option to send microsoft any information. It
therefore seems that there is not very much in the way of exception
handling within Movie Maker...mind you, I did not put any of that in
quotes!!!

I'm hearing the frustration :)

When it does crash and offers you the chance to send info, please do so.
The more information MS gets, the better the chance that they can find the
problem and offer a solution.

Cheers!
