For wish #1, use the free WinDV utility (link on my Setup > Other Software
page) to capture the file if you want feedback about lost frames.

Another wish: one way to remove the modal dialog that shows when the capture
is finished, so
the clip splitting job starts automatically at the end of the capture
without me having to be around to click "ok" <grin>
