Is there any way to take separate .avi file clips and
import them into a single collection. so far, whenever I
do this, i get a separate collection for each clip

You can have collections of collections

tried that...what I want to achieve is a list of all
my .avi clips in a single collection and all the clips
listed in one content pane. now, whenever I import into
collections (or just import video), it always creates a
separate collection for each clip so I have to drag each
clip, collection by collection, into my story line. I
suspect that MM will only create multiple clips in a
single collection if *it* creates the clips or I create
the clips inside MM. However, I want to create my
clip .avi files outside of MM (using Sony's DVgate
software).

hope this clarifies.

thanks

I don't know if this will work or not, but you could try importing multiple video clips at once. When you are in the import clips dialog box browse to the folder with the video files you want and either high light them all, or Ctrl + Click to choose only certain files
