Myt digital camera outputs mjpeg, like most. But when I import it into
Movie Maker I can't play it, so I can't see what I'm cutting or adding.

I don't know about the "like most" part but if your camcorder is digital
then it should have a firewire port on it.
Use that connection (if you don't have a port on the computer a firewire
card is rather inexpensive) and import
directly into Movie Maker. This way MPEG isn't an issue as you are capturing
video and saving it as DV-AVI or WMV video.

Where did I say it was a camcorder?
It is a digital still camera with some video capabilities. Canon Sd400.

Yes, I love how the most common file format gives it trouble... jpeg.
Soon Windows won't work with hard drives.

You said mjpeg and I dropped the j instead of the m in what I took to be a
typo.
Also you said you can't "play" it in movie maker so I assumed by that as
there was a lack of information provided.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes it is true that jpeg "sometimes" gives WMM
trouble but it is rare.
As far as jpeg being "the most common file format" I would say it isn't any
more common than GIF or BMP.
