I use a VAIO PC with MM2, and all is going well with video
editing. However, I can't cleanly save back to my Canon
ZR45MC MiniDV camcorder -- various performance anomalies,
including jerkiness, stuttering, dropped segments, etc.
However, I can successfully save my work as a big 30 fps
AVI file.

Any suggestions on how to export my finished product back
to the camera with some kind of separate software or
process?

Thanks!

That takes a well tuned up hard drive - free space and defrag - and other
software not running. Try the DVIO utility - link on the Camcorders...

Thanks for the help! The DVIO utility couldn't handle the
file I've been working with, which weighs in at just over
4 GB. Could it be a file size issue? I continually get an
error message trying to play this avi file. Any hunch as
to why?

On the bright side, after running a defrag on the drive
that holds my original source files and MovieMaker temp
files, WMM2 did a much better job, and I was able to
export the full length of the 20-minute video back to my
camcorder. The first few seconds of video were not
captured (which always seems to happen when using my
camcorder this way), and there were 2 or 3 times when the
picture froze for a split second.

Any other suggested system tweaks I might try? Thanks
again for all your help. :-)

Yes. Actually, the drive which stores my files uses NTFS,
and, FWIW, I also saved the DVIO executable to that same
drive.

Check that the file itself isn't fragmented (Start > right click on My
Computer > Manage > Disk Disk Defragmenter > Select the drive > Analyze >
View Report > look at the list of the most fragmented files and see if the
file is on it.

If it's fragmented - or your list of fragmented files is more than 10 or so,
defrag again until you know your file isn't fragmented.

Then it's between the hard drive/computer and the capture card/cable and
camcorder. Just a little detective work.

Still stumped on the DVIO utility. I can send any smaller
file I want to across the Firewire connection, but my big
4+ gig file seems to cause this app problems. I don't think
it's a capture card, cable, or camcorder thing. Do you know
if DVIO is trying to load the whole file up into memory?

Jim,

It couldn't do that if it wanted to - no-one has 4 GB of memory and files of
that size or larger get transferred.
