Capture error msg
I'm not well versed on computer lingo, but I'll do my best. I'm trying to
capture video from my Canon camcorder to a laptop, edit it & burn it to a
dvd. I have a Compaq Presario R3000, have put in an IEEE1394 2 port bus
adapter (3 pin to 2, I think) & attached the firewire to it & the camcorder.
The camcorder knows it's attached to the computer & the computer "sees" the
Canon. I have XP w/ SP1 & Windows MovieMaker downloaded from CNET. So, it
will rewind the tape & when it goes to capture, error message "An unknown
error has occurred" appears & it won't do anything. I've tried everything &
can't get it to work, does anyone know how to fix this. Also, I'm not sure
how to burn the DVD, if there are any tutorials anyone knows of I would
appreciate some help. Thanks!! Tag: capture error message Tag: 27902
Cut out more than half mpg file- Saving makes it bigger than it was
I was using Windows Movie Maker to cut out parts of long movies to
make the files smaller. It worked great for .wmv files but when I cut
out more than half of a .mpg file and saved it, Windows Movie Maker
made the file about twice as big. This, of course, is just the
opposite of what I was trying to do. I thought it might be because MS
has to force everyone to use only their formats for everything and
therefore the .wmv format is not as compressed as .mpg. But I got a
conversion program and it did not help.
Ideally I would like to be able to cut out things from any format
movie file or add things to them or join parts together or any
combination of those things. Can anyone help me with any of this????
Thanks!

HELP! Very Basic Movie Maker Info Needed
I have created a movie using jpg digital photographs and title pages only. I

AVI audio last 1 second, not 30
AVI-clips from my Canon Powershot G3 work well when viewed before making
changes, but when for instance imported into movie maker, the audio explodes
in and is played in 1-3 seconds instead of during the whole clip. The same
goes for doing any changes in other programs (rotating the video for
instance), the audio instantly gets corrupted. I am very grateful for any
help! Tag: capture error message Tag: 27885
Change default location for project files?
In MM2, is it possible to change the default location for saving project
files?
It appears to be permanently set to C:\....\My Videos, and I want to save
all my projects on my E drive, and in a folder called Projects. I have to
navigate to that folder every time I create / save a project. (I find "My
Videos" too general a name and I like to split my work into separate folders
i.e. Captured Video, Projects, Saved Movies).
I know how to change the default for temp files but that is not the issue.
My query concerns only Project files.

Delete Dross Q for JK
John
Recently I cancelled/interrupted the rendering of a 25GB avi file, yet that
sucker still lives -- somewhere -- on my hard drive. I've tried lots of
searches via Explorer with zero success, so my "Plan B" was to dust off the
PC DOS 6.3 command manual and rig up a command string that will ID this ghost
file... until I spotted your DeleteDross routine -- but it sounds like I need
to feed DeleteDross the filename -- is this correct ?
Any thoughts/ideas appreciated -- thanks for your time.

I found a bug in MM2
Hi, I think I've found a bug in MM2 (but I'm not sure if it's already
reported).
I've imported a tape (Sony Handcam DCR-HC18E), then I started my MM project.
I've put clips, subtitles, titles, transaction, effects.
Then I click on "Save video...". The output format is DV-AVI.
But the MM gives the infamous error message "The video cannot be saved: ...".
Then I tried to investigate the problem by splitting my project in small
pieces.
I found that the problem is this:
when a clip contains as initial frame the last frame of previous clip, MM
refuses to encode the movie and interrupts the encoding.
Then I solved by removing the 1st and 2nd frame of the clip and doing split
clip and erasing that 2 frames (I cannot split one frame :( )
Doing this it solved my problem. Tag: capture error message Tag: 27879
Movie Maker not found WinXP SP2 Home Edition
I came to this site to download Microsoft Movie Maker to only learn that I
need to have either Win XP Pro or Home Edition SP2 installed. So, Im
thinking why didnt I receive this software when I updated to SP2 a month or
two ago. I just tried a minutes ago to see if there were any more updates
that I missed, but my PC is up to date and this copy(as all of mine are) is
completely legit!
Anyone encounter this or know what I can do in getting the Movie Maker
software?

monitoring sound
is there any way to monitor the sound through my pc speakers during recording?
I'm using WMM 5.1, Sharp VL-NZ105 mini DV camera thru 1394 Firewire card

Files, files and more huge files
Just wondering... everyone is doing all this saving and editing in DV-AVI,
but converting and authoring to DVD in MPEG2... I'm gonna run out of disk
space as I imagine many others are.
Here's how I see it...
1) you want to backup all those home movies cause tape won't last, so we
save on computers as DV-AVI and DVDs as MPEG2
2) you want to be able to edit those movies, so you have to keep the DV-AVI
file on your HDD cause WMM doesn't import MPEG2 video.
3) you can't get a bigger HDD to store more DV-AVIs and HDDs fail too, so
you want to get the DV-AVI to DVD
So, here is my proposed solutions...
Microsoft adds the MPEG2 handling ability to WMM and we are all done.
or
I have to capture my taped movies to WMM and save as DV-AVI, create backup
DVDs with the DV-AVI format (takes about 3 times the DVD space, strictly to
archive DV-AVI format instead of leaving on HDD), edit the DV-AVI in WMM and
generate the edited DV-AVI (which I may want to backup to a data DVD also),
convert the DV-AVI to MPEG2 and author to a DVD.
This way, I get to keep the HDD open, I have viewable DVDs, I have archive
data DVDs, I have no more time cause each step above takes hours, and I have
missed my son growing by creating DVDs of his first week alive.
Any better ideas on how to accomplish all this?
Thanks,

I using moviemaker 5.1. I import an mpg file into my collections. When
I play the clip in MM (and in media player) the audio is fine. When I

I can click back up on the movie clip and play and get audio just fine.
It's only on the timeline the audio doesn't play. If I expand the
timeline I can see the audio block with the oscilloscope like display.

Slide show issues in VideoCD
I used Windows Movie Maker to create a JPG slide show, to record onto
VideoCD. The images are 640x480, 150ppi. The WMV file was then converted to
MPG using TMPGEnc, and burned onto VideoCD using Nero. Here's the problem:
1) Each image expands about 20 pixels off my TV screen.
2) There's black flickering on the border of some images. The width of the
border flicker is about 10 pixels.
3) Each image is pixellated.
Of course, considering this sample was recorded onto VideoCD, Nero warned me
that the quality would be downgraded. How do I fix the above problems? Do I
need to adjust TMPGEnc settings, image size, or what?
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Movie Size
My question has to do with the size of movies. To me, it seems that if you
want to burn a home video, it should be captured and burned in the highest
quality possible. When doing that, the file sizes are huge. I have never
actually put 2 hours worth of footage together of my kids, but from the
smaller sizes that I have played around with, it seems like the file size
would be bigger than the size of a dvd (not including the dvd menu items).
What format should I capture in to have a great quality 2 hour movie, but
have it small enough that it could be burnt to dvd?

How can I preview my clips on the timeline

sound comes up.

No Video After Saving
After saving my MM2 movie (about 600 jpg's with MP3 music), the saved .wmv
(created with the 'Save to my computer' option) shows only the beginning 3
title pages, then hangs displaying the last title screen, and continues for
the next hour with music only. It plays fine from within MM, just fails from
the saved file. Also, I notice that the saved file is only about 54 MB
instead of the aprox. 450 MB it says it is saving at creation time. So I
assume something is going wrong in the save process and the video is not
getting saved. I didn't get any error messages during the save process and
have plenty of disk space.
Ideas?

Collection Created in MM1 and now trying to access them in MM2
Hi. I've spent countless hours creating my collections of movie clips in MM1
and now I got another (more powerful and newer) computer that has MM2 on it.
When I opened up MM2, none of my collections were there- but I could get the
video I captured from my video camera (but it was clipped).
I jumped on the forum and read papajohn's post re: getting the collection
backup file (mine was called "Windows Movie Maker.COL" since it was a MM1
file). When I tried to paste the file in the recommended folder...
\Documents and Settings\UserAccountName\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Movie Maker...but I didn't even have a folder for Movie Maker.
Thus, I created one in the Microsoft Folder so that the path would be
duplicated as recommended.
However....no collections are still present. Any tips on getting a .col
file to work in MM2? I really, really, really, really need something to work!
Thanks!

Questions about Movie Maker
I would like to burn a slide show of family pictures onto a DVD...but Nero's
DVD creation software is not quite up to par. I would like to use Windows
Movie Maker to create an MPEG of my slides. But I have a few
questions/problems:
1) I have Windows Movie Maker installed, but it's version 1. I am unable to
locate version 2 in Windows Update. What's going on?
2) When I preview slides in Movie Maker, and click the Full Screen button,
my images (JPG) are extremely pixellated and jagged.
3) Is Movie Maker this plain? How do I insert transitions? How do I control
the delay for each image in the slide show? How do I get into the in-depth
control of my project?
4) Are there any freeware applications out there (or unrestricted trials)
that will allow me to create a pleasant-looking slide show to convert to
MPEG?
Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

Movie Maker 2.1 Crashing
I'm not sure if the problem I'm having is related to XP SP 2 or not because I
think it might've been happening before that. The problem I have is that
Movie Maker hangs and does not respond. This primarily happens when I'm in
the process of capturing video. I'm able to capture video if I do short
clips, but the longer I go into the process, the more of a chance there is
that it will crash. One way I can tell that it's about to crash is if no
preview is being displayed when I'm playing the video on the camcorder (not
capturing). It has crashed at other times as well, but it crashes just about
every time I try to capture something. I have a Sony Digital 8 Camcorder and
I'm capturing through a firewire. It seems that somehow the camcorder and my
computer stop communicating during the process. However, I've done a test
capture using WinDV, and it seems to work fine. But, it does seem to be a
little choppy in places when doing the test capture. Does anybody have any
suggestions on what the problem might be?
