Will not import anything

Windows movie maker is not importing ANY kind of file. Avis, mpg, mpeg, wmv,
nothing. It tells me "The file C:\filename.wmv cannot be imported because the
codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you
have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart
Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again." No matter what I
do, no matter what codecs, it won't import anything. Any help?

It won't import mpeg/mpeg or some types of avi.
It should import wmv and dv-avi without problems though.

If you have an app called file lock, look at it's permissions or remove it
and see if that helps to start with.

Think that should be check for folder lock and not file lock.
