I once had the same problem and had to take advice. For me the problem
was because I had captured video of my own making and some from elsewhere.
The elsewhere video had its frames displayed in the wrong order (For TV etc
there are two frames often called odd and even) It seems that because these
frames were in the wrong order the codec fails to function properly and the
result is exactly as you describe.
My solution was to save the various elements separately and then
re-import them and then from there make the final video. Obviously doing it
this way you first check each of the newly created elements first before
committing them to the final cut.
