What error message are you getting and what did you do that resulted in that
message being displayed?

I tried to save my movie to a cd and it came up "not enough free dick space & source files...." there was also a pop up that virtual memory too low, so I just did a disk clean up and restarted my computer... I DL the windows media encoder and that didn't work I am at a loss!!

That's long enough to get into memory or hard drive issues.... you don't
need to save a part of it. I guess I'm just wondering if you've successfully
saved movies before to both WMV and DV-AVI formats. Is this your first time
using MM2 to do what you want, or is it a new problem?

Ho Ho !

In what way is it a possible memory problem papajohn? Movie Maker has an
upper limit that it can use as you know, don't you?. If it needs more than
is available it uses the swap file....so how is this a memory issue. Do you
know what the upper limit on RAM is for Movie Maker?

What hard drive issue do you have in mind? Which hard drive issue do you
think would cause this problem? Can you explain why it is an issue. Please
give us specifics rather than generalisations so that we can better judge
the value .

OK, Movie Maker is very flakey when it comes across something it can't
handle. The result is that it tempts you into believing that it is one of
these "non specific" problems that maybe/might have/waffle waffle/ has
caused it to fail.

Things you need to know/do......

1) Prove to your self that the source files are where Movie Maker thinks
they are

2) Attempt to estimate how much space the saved video itself needs (If its a
DV-AVI format then roughly you need at least 3.25GB of hard drive space, if
its a WMV file it will depending on what size and quality you have chosen,
be significantly less than that...Movie Maker has a guess at how much space
is needed, look for it when you choose the format you want)

3) If you have used the Windows "Disk Clean-Up" routine all you have
actually done is create larger pockets of free space on the disk. You may
want to do a defrag (more on that in a mo) but at this stage it will make no
difference whatsoever!!!

4) Using the Microsoft Defrag utility does not defrag the drive...it only
defrags the files....big difference. Windows XP will create nice pockets of
fragmented drive space that in a "Capture video" situation might cause
problems. In a create a file situation where time is of no interest at all
it makes no difference whether you have the fastest drive in existence or
the first drive ever made...it is not time dependent.

5) If you have a product like Symantec System Works you can use the defrag
utility in that to get a properly defragmented drive. You can also use it to
put files of a certain type into specific locations on the hard
drive.....hint...all the exe, com, sys, inf, dll, ax files to the front and
everything else to the very end of the drive.....

6) Download the FULL version of DirectX 9.0b, the FULL version of Windows
Media Player 9. Reboot the machine and then install DirectX9, reboot again
and install WMP9 and reboot yet again. Do NOT be tempted half way through to
see if that "fixed" it...you will defeat the whole point of doing it if you
do that. It is important that you get the full versions rather than allow an
install over the NET...not a good way of doing things in your circumstances.

7) Determine whether or not your CD-Writer has the latest drivers

8) Determine whether or not you have disabled the XP built in CD-Writing
software I am not certain but it would not surprise me if Movie Maker was
dependent on it being enabled. Its disabled on my machine...its so
slow...........

9) Check to see whether any other third party program that writes to CD is
installed and whether or not it is the latest version.

10) Check to see whether any DVD or Video game you have installed is the
latest version...Games use codecs as well!

11) Download and run "Rename Codecs" from my web site...Its worth a try if
everything else fails...check out the tutorial on how to use it. If it does
not work you have lost nothing.

Yes exactly, that's why I object most strongly when people such as your
self are given the wrong information. Except under extreme circumstances
(which would reveal itself with every program you tried to run) your hard
drive and memory have no impact on you saving your work as a video. There
are just two circumstances when it would....1) you have no available RAM for
Movie Maker to occupy and use. 2) The hard drive does not have any space
left on it.

Here is a re-post of a message I made here earlier, follow the
instructions and afterwards let us know what progress, if any, you have
made...........

Reply to first question.....You open movie maker and right click on on each
file and look at the properties. One of the pieces of information is the
location of the file. Using Windows explorer you then navigate to that
location and visually inspect the contents, confirming or otherwise ther
existence of the relevent file.

Reply to second question............type this into the searchbox of Movie
Makers Help File "Saving a movie to My computer " and read the result that
ranks number 1

Well I guess if you can find your way to a newsgroup you should be able to
find something on your own computer. I have no idea where you saved them
to. Let me know when you have worked through all of my suggestions. If you

I DL & installed the full versions and then tried and it still popped up virtual memory minimum too low... if I install the rename codecs would that help the problem.... my movie is 99.41MB... i'm so confused!!!

Re: Tried everything still get the "error" message by John

Hello,

Rename Codecs will not have any effect on your virtual memory.

Did you follow all of the points laid out exactly? if you did not, you run
the risk of getting no where.

Are you saying that the only message you get now is one telling you to
adjust your virtual memory? If so, then do so. Perhaps you should also tell
us how much RAM is installed on your machine.

Well, I would have thought the answer to what you do next is self
evident...Increase the size of your virtual memory as the message box
suggests.

As I said in my previous message, the program Rename Codecs will not
sort your particular problem,

I think I asked how much RAM you have on your system and how much hard
drive space is available.. You are making it very difficult to help if you
do not supply all of the info needed

How do I increase the size of my virtual memory? I have 128MB of RAM and 26.2GB of free space

Re: Tried everything still get the "error" message by John

John
Mon May 17 12:50:30 CDT 2004

Oh.

erm, you have nowhere near enough RAM I am sorry to have to tell you. When
Movie Maker is well engaged in processing it will use up to 540MB of RAM.

128MB is barely enough to get XP itself running, frankly I am surprised you
can even load Movie Maker.

Anyway, go to my website and find the tutorial section, then Disk Drives and
from there Virtual Memory. But, before you go....It is the experts opinion
at Microsoft that there is little point in setting your virtual memory to
anything higher than 1.5 times your RAM. In your case that is still not big
enough to run XP and MovieMaker. Because of the way a pagefile works I doubt
if your present set-up will ever work properly in respect to Movie Maker.
So, if you can, you should upgrade your RAM as soon as possible. I suspect
that you are using a motherboard that has the older type of RAM and as RAM
is in any case very cheap nowadays the older style should be very
cheap....in fact I have a small draw here into which I throw RAM strips that
I cannot even give away !!! yet they cost a small ransom when first bought.

Sorry the news is a bit glum for you, If I had known I could have saved you
a lot of effort.
