Transitions & Effects

I installed Movie Maker 2 and after installation I don't
have any video effects or transitions. I reinstalled and
nothing happened. I even went through System Restore and
went back to Movie Maker 1 and tried to reinstall Movie
Maker 2 again and I am still with transitions and
effects. Any suggestions?

Hi, I can't help you. All I can do is tell you you
aren't alone. Apparently there is a rash of disappearing
transitions and effects. Though I know some people have
tried different things, I can't understand what they are
doing since Movie Maker doesn't show up in my start menu
anyway. And, boy, finding the directory of files was a
pain.

I have strong suspicion that it may be fixed by re-installing DirectX. Can
you please try and report success or otherwise!

I have two computers running XP Home edition. Both
computers have the exact same version of XP and Movie
Maker 2. Only one of them has lost transitions and
effects. The computer that has not lost transitions has a
Pentium chip and the one that did lose effects has a
Celeron chip. That is the only obvious diffence between
the two computers. I also lost Windows Media Player on the
Celeron computer. I've been trying to figure out a
solution as well. We need to get this solved. Do the other
users having trouble have a Celeron chip?

I have a pentium chip, and not sure if it matters or not
but my Windows Media Player runs perfectly, I just wish I
had the transitions and effects. I looked around for
other forums or sites that offer help but all the ones I
have found don't cover my problem or have anyone on it
that knows how to solve my problem.

It's interesting that the problem is only effecting some
and not all. What could the difference be? I have two
computers and only one is effected. I too have been
searching other resources without success. As wide spread
as this is, one would think that MS would have released a
patch to fix the problem.

I have one PC with WMM running under XP. Under my user name many effects have disappeared but when my daughter uses it under her user name there are even fewer effects. There is only one copy of the software on my PC. Any thoughts?

Hello there,

I have not tested it out at all, and it does seem very odd that it is
affecting some and not all. The type of CPU you have will not affect this.
So it got me thinking about what would some users not have that others do,
and from sad experience its a good firewall and anti virus package. Having
a son who works in that part of the computer industry I can tell you that
firewall's and AV software are a very very long way from being equal or
capable of doing the full job at all....so, ...

Are you logged on to your machine with administrator rights??? Have you
tested whether you still are an administrator? If not, simply create a new
account with admin access rights and log back on using that account instead
of your normal one.

If you are not currently an administrator this could be the cause of the
problem. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that a virus/worm could
demote you and install itself as an administrator (perhaps) if that or
something similar were to occur you would find that access to stuff you
installed as an administrator would no longer be available...there are some
proviso's to that...but its close enough as it stands.

I realise that its full of if's and maybe's and its easily going to be a
long way wrong...but its worth a look, just in case.

I would be pleased if you could tell me how it turns out...even if my guess
is wrong :)

I think I should make one part a little clearer. I am not suggesting in any
way that Movie Maker is the target of a virus...I am just saying that if a
virus did this for some other reason, the effect to you COULD be this.

I did all this but still no cigar... I even attempted
reinstalling afterwards and it's not working. It just
doesn't want to give me any transitions or effects. Worth
a try though.. thanks anyways!

I tried the suggestions that John Kelly made and still no
luck. I also downloaded that latest DirectX 9b. That did
not fix it either. I am at a loss. Are we stuck with this?

Hi Justin

Out of curosity about the issue I have done some experiments locally which
may be helpful in your investigations:

To reproduce this problem myself, I manually unregistered the two effects
DLLs: mm2fxa.dll and mm2fxb.dll

It did make some transitions and effects vanish as expected but then when I
tried to re-register these dlls manually, the registration failed giving me
an error code which ErrLook reported as "Class not registered". I must say
that I tried everyhting I could to register those DLLs but was not able to
(even though I am a seasoned COM developer myself :-(). Things I tried
include finding all depended dlls and registring them first. Didnt help.

In the end I had to use System Restore to recover my transitions and
effects. Phew!!!

I suspected these DLLs are some system dlls which cannot be manually
registered but require some proper installer to be run such as DirectX. Is
that possible? Or there might be a bug in the dll registration code.
(although may be not related, but there was one in the sample for custom
effects which meant only the custom effect coclass was unregistering leaving
the custom transition coclass remaining registered!)

I am running XP SP2 beta. so the WMM version is 2.1.

John Kelly. That sounded like good information regarding administrator. I am
administrator and had no problems downloading transitions and effects.
Actually downloaded Bonus pak with music, sounds, etc.
My problem is that after loading transitions in storyboard and switching to
timeline, my ttransitions disappear when I go back to storyboard.
Theories?

I have a suggestion and I am having the same problem. I recently got the
digital media edition of xp which gave me mroe transitions but today when I
wanted to work with MM they were gone. Before today and after I installed
Digital Media Edition, i cleaned my computer using WinXP manager which some
of you may or may not have on your computers. This got rid of all
'unnessesary files' and because I'm a bit of an idiot I just deleted them
all. I'm not sure whether these may be transitions and effects but I've got a
hunch that it might have something to do with it.

The only problem with this possibility is that I recently installed SP2 and
it updated MM, only the transitions and effects were not there. This problem
is really confusing me and I hope there is a solution somewhere...
