I need to split the audio and video so I can delete the audio portion and add
my own narration. I know that I can mute the audio, but this actually ends
up in a larger file because the audio is still coded for, it's just muted.
Is there any way to physically split the audio or get just the video part of
a video on the timeline? Thanks!

I know you can add an audio/video combo to the audio section and force it to
become audio only - but I don't know how to do it the other way around.

Are you sure that with the mute option it still encodes the audio? Sorry I
don't have an actual solution - PapaJohn might sort you out in a few hours
once he awakes...

Meanwhile try this -

TMPGEnc seems like a prefered solution

create a new profile that saves only the video (see PapaJohn's web site). Put
your video on the timeline, save your movie as an AVI file then import it
back into moviemaker. You now have a video clip with no audio.
