    - FAQ: #20050730 Crashes & Hangs Movie Maker FAQ 1 Last updated 6th January 2005 Crashing and Hanging ================ 1) What is a Codec? ============== A Codec is software that was first created to deal with the transposition of data from one form into another. One of the first important Codecs was a procedure still used today called Soundex. I believe the first proper use of Soundex was by the Mormons. Most of us use Soundex or its equivalent every time we use a spell checker. The Mormons use it in their vast database of all persons baptised by them. It enables very fast data searches on similar sounding words that are not necessarily spelled the same way. Soundex though is a one way procedure. Its a CODER The other part of the word Codec is derived from the word DECODER. Joining the two parts together we get the word CODEC...Codec. With regard to Codecs and any Video or Audio playing software. MP3 or WMA audio files have been compressed using CODER routines. When you play those files on your computer you are using the DECODER routines to produce a sound or video signal that can be seen/heard on your machine. With regard to Audio/Video editing software. A Codec is used to compress the data so that it occupies as small a space as possible usually on a hard drive. But in the case of editing a file the Codec must first expand the compressed data before the edit can occur and afterwards compress it again when the data is saved to a new file. The problems with Codecs arise from "Calls" A call is the expression used to define the way one software module talks to another so that information can be passed between the two. The problem occurs when the Call is not properly formatted, or the reply is not understood. This becomes a problem that the calling software must handle. When the calling software fails to handle the error it can do one of a number of things....the correct way is to contain the error and respond with an alternative approach and possibly inform the user that the error occurred, the other approach we are all to familiar with, either the software or the machine crashes and probably taking all of your hard work with it. 2) Movie Maker crashes, what can I do? ============================ From item one above there is a good chance that your problem arises from a problem with a Codec. Movie Maker version 2.1 was supposed to address this issue by giving you the user the ability to disable one or more of the Codecs on your machine. The problem however is not fully addressed and results in some Codecs not being exposed to the disable option. If its that particular Codec that is causing the problem you are stuck. You need to know which Codec it is, where it is, possibly what other software installed it and what other dependencies exist. In other words you need to know a LOT of things. The proper way of dealing with the issue would be to remove the offending Codec but that's not very practical as you may really need the other software that depends on it. There is a temporary solution available in the form of a program called "Rename Codecs" It has been in use for perhaps a year now by many hundreds of people and with great success. There have been a total of 6 times that the program did not solve the users problem (At the time of writing this) You can obtain your FREE copy of the program from www.the-kellys.org The basics of the program are that it will offer you the option of temporarily renaming Codecs that are known to be a problem for Movie Maker. You would do that before using Movie Maker. Once you are finished using the program you again run Movie Maker and use the RESTORE option to put those Codecs back into operation...its very easy to use. There is an additional option. You can use the options within XP to turn off the various levels of video acceleration that your graphics card has. Doing this is not a good idea but if you do you must understand that every program that relies on those abilities will either run badly or not at all. To turn the acceleration down right click your desktop and select PROPERTIES, then SETTINGS then ADVANCED and then TROUBLERSHOOT. You will then see a slider bar which should normally be positioned on the far right. You can move it one step at a time and then close the dialog down and re-try Movie Maker. You can repeat those steps until (and if) Movie Maker works properly. A lot of video programs give you the opportunity of taking a snap shot of the video displayed, Intervideo WinDVD 5 does a good job of this. Movie Maker also has this option. BUT, if you turn the acceleration down as above, you will no longer be able to take those snapshots. This is not a great problem of course as you can change the acceleration back. But it is rather tedious. 3) How do I make my system perform better and stop Movie Maker crashing ======================================================= This is by far the best way of doing things. Whilst the Rename Codec program is a MUST when you really do need to keep "other" software on your system, the following approach will ensure that your system runs at its best speed and will be less likely to crash at all from Video or Audio problems. You need to download the latest versions of DirectX and the Windows Codecs pack together with the latest version of Windows Media Player. You should NOT try to install these packages via the Internet, you should get the standalone versions. The reason is obvious once you know it. Suppose those updates you did some time back are not working properly...it may be that they were not installed properly or it may be that a file is either corrupt or simply missing. How would you know??? The more experienced may spot the problem but the average user will not. So why download the full package??? That's easy. When you unzip a package several checks are made to ensure the integrity of the files inside the zip. If there is a problem you will be told there and then...the file is corrupt or damaged in some other way....you do not need to trust an install over the Internet and the possibility of data being missed.... This a large download. Its not to bad if you have a reasonably fast broadband connection, but if the download fails its a long way back to the start!!! Personally I would recommend you obtain A CD version of SP2...its available on the Windows Magazine and from Microsoft directly Drivers for your graphics card ---------------------------------- I have discovered that most people are confused on the issue of drivers for their graphics card in that when advised to acquire the latest driver they go straight to the Microsoft website and get one from them. Their is a problem with that in that the drivers supplied by Microsoft are Generic. I made the mistake of going direct to Microsoft some time back and the result was that I could only run the machine in the basic "Safe Mode" the driver was the most up to date and was definitely more recent than the existing driver. It took some time to understand what was going on I must admit...... The graphics card was an NVidia GForce 4 etc and was manufactured by Gainward. After several attempts at getting the Microsoft driver to install I decided that the download MUST BE corrupted in some way, So I went to the NVidia website and downloaded their driver (Same version number as the one from Microsoft) I had the exact same problems!!! In the end I went to the Gainward website and downloaded the most up to date driver they had.....once installed the graphics card performed better than ever and with more configuration options than I would ever need. So why did an older driver work better than the most recent from NVidia ??? Its simple when you know why .... Gainward produce high capability cards and in order to achieve some of their aims they change the way the NVidia chipset works. This requires a modified driver....and they produce their own. The card is still based on the NVidia and conforms to the basic design....but it runs very much faster because of code optimisation, and that optimisation is missing from the Microsoft or NVidia drivers. The result of all this is that you should ALWAYS go to the website of the MANUFACTURER of the card and not the manufacturer of the chipset (in my case NVidia) The Method ----------------- Reboot your computer and install SP2. After the install has completed you should reboot your computer twice...yes boring but desirable After the reboot you should now install the DirectX pack and reboot again. After that reboot install the Codec Pack and reboot yet again. After that install Windows Media Player and reboot again Finally install the latest driver for your graphics card. Rebooting the machine does perform an important task. It completes installation process's and ensures that previously existing file locks are removed. Under certain conditions XP will not overwrite a file if it has been locked. Note that this is not the same as marking a file as Read Only. Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility --------------------------------------------------------------- This utility can be obtained here... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/portablemediacenter/decoder.mspx A very useful program but with a problem. It reports that I have the MGI MPEG-2 Video Decoder on one of my machines...I have NO MGI software on my system!! I would not let that put you off using it as it does have a useful purpose even though the same objective can be achieved via other already existing routes within XP. I am in favour of this program as it does give good advice on which Codec you should select as the preferred Codec 4) What files does Movie Maker NOT like? ============================== Any MPEG based file will cause Movie Maker problems even though they seldom cause problems for Media Player. There are a number of reasons...Media Player does not need the CODER part of the Codec and there are many methods/procedures/algothims used to Code an MPeg file and its that wide range of methods that Movie Maker can not address. Its not really a bug but the method of dealing with the issue, well there is no method...Movie Maker gives an error and crashes or it just crashes. The particular file extensions are Mpeg, MPG and MP3. JPeg still images can also be a problem and for similar reasons to MPeg files. There are a number of formats for a JPeg and it seems that the older formats are not properly dealt with. To work around the issue you can reduce the compression used in creating the JPeg and NOT use the progressive format method The best solution for these problems is to convert the file into a more acceptable format, and as it happens a format that is more easily worked on by Movie Maker...the conversion you should employ are MPeg, MPG convert to AVI, MP3 convert to WAV and JPeg, JPG convert to a standard bitmap BMP NOTES ====== There are several other approaches you can take to solving a Codec issue. I have seen several other methods of solving the problem, and basically they don't. Instead they treat the symptom and not the problem itself. Several other methods involve damaging the picture of your computers layout (that's a bad pun by the way) and simply doing that involves the risk of permanent damage to that picture. The program Rename Codecs also damages that picture of your system but it does at least provide a user friendly way of restoring your system and that method requires no prior knowledge on your part about where, which and how to make those changes. All efforts are made to ensure that the information is accurate. As no one is perfect I would be happy to hear of any errors found in this document (send an e-mail to webmaster@the-kellys.org).     - MM2 XP Home Hangs sorta Over the course of this project (first one we've done) we've had the software "hang" sort of.. The computer is responsive, the cpu utilization is minimal (~4%), and all other softwar works. Task Manager shows that the app is running. I can alt-tab to it but the screen only partially redraws and I have no control over the app. If I right click on the app's icon in the toolbar the context menu flashes briefly but I can not access anything in it. The system has 512 meg of ram, 200 Gig NTFS drive. I am not running any other apps during this process. The only codecs loaded are nero stuff and what ever is put in by Windows itself. The machine is very clean and purposely kept as simple as possible. The clip is made up entirely of stills, title pages, transistions and music. We are not using any video at all. There are an estimated 500 events in the project. The resulting file seems to be about 60 meg. The hangs don't seem to follow any pattern, other than happening about 60 seconds before we decide to save. With this latest hang I've decided to let it sit overnight to see if it ever comes back.     - sony dcr-hc21 video camera problem I recently purchased a Sony DCR-HC21 HandyCam. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to download (upload?) video from the camera to my PC. I added a Firewire Port and connect from that to the DV interface. The only software that came with the camera is the Picture Package disk. When I follow the steps in Picture Package to upload to PC, I get a screen that says to "connect the camera". Damn thing is connected! I've tried Control Panel>Scanners & Cameras>Add Device, but it doesn't automatically sense the camera and there seems to be no program on the Picture Package disk to install the camera. My Firewire port is a dual port with USB2. Using the USB2 side, I can download from my Canon Digital Still Camera, so I know the port is active. Second question: The Sony manual (@%@%$) says that I can download directly to DVD (I have a burner), but I must first use the "Click to DVD" function. The instructions are: 1. turn on the computer 2. start>all programs 3. select [click to DVD] from the programs displayed, then click [Click to DVD Automatic Mode Launcher] After you start up [Click to DVD Automatic Mode Launcher] once, from then on it starts up automatically. There is no Click to DVD in any program I can find. There is no drop-down for Sony, and the Picture Program doesn't have this. I have a feeling that there's something simple I haven't done, but I don't know what it is.     - play back vcd on other computer I got the movie saved as a vcd, and i have been watching it on my computer that i saved it on. It plays fine on a dvd player. But i went to work to show the co-workers and i cant get it to play on my windows media player. why? do i need to change settings or something on it? Work computer is running windows ME. also, i already deleted the movie off my computer, is there a way to upload it back from the vcd so i can put it on the web.     - VHS Video Capture, NVTV Card, Windows Movie Maker 2 Hello, I own the NVTV Single Tuner Card and have it installed in a Windows Media Center 2005 PC. Everything with MCE works fine. I have some home movies on VHS that I want to transfer to DVD. I'm using Windows Movie Maker Version 2.1.4026.0 on Windows XP MCE 2005 with Service Pack 2 installed. When I try to capture video from the VCR in Windows Movie Maker, I receive the following errors: 1. The video device is currently in use. Close any other application that is using the device and try again. 2. The video device cannot be used at this time because there has been an error when starting the device. ::: What I've tried ::: I searched this forum, other forums (yes, PapaJohn's was one of them), and the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Microsoft has article that recommends temporarily disabling a Media Center Receiver service. I tried this and rebooted, but it did not work. ::: Setup ::: I have the VCR connected directly to the NVTV card using RCA cables. The red and white audio cables connect to a stereo-mini adapter and that plugs into the audio-in jack on the card. The yellow video cable connects to the RCA/S-Video cable and that plugs into the video-in jack on the card. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? A lot of video programs give you the opportunity of taking a snap shot of the video displayed, Intervideo WinDVD 5 does a good job of this. Movie Maker also has this option. BUT, if you turn the acceleration down as above, you will no longer be able to take those snapshots. This is not a great problem of course as you can change the acceleration back. But it is rather tedious. 3) How do I make my system perform better and stop Movie Maker crashing ======================================================= This is by far the best way of doing things. Whilst the Rename Codec program is a MUST when you really do need to keep "other" software on your system, the following approach will ensure that your system runs at its best speed and will be less likely to crash at all from Video or Audio problems. After several attempts at getting the Microsoft driver to install I decided that the download MUST BE corrupted in some way, So I went to the NVidia website and downloaded their driver (Same version number as the one from Microsoft) I had the exact same problems!!! In the end I went to the Gainward website and downloaded the most up to date driver they had.....once installed the graphics card performed better than ever and with more configuration options than I would ever need. So why did an older driver work better than the most recent from NVidia ??? Its simple when you know why .... Gainward produce high capability cards and in order to achieve some of their aims they change the way the NVidia chipset works. This requires a modified driver....and they produce their own. The card is still based on the NVidia and conforms to the basic design....but it runs very much faster because of code optimisation, and that optimisation is missing from the Microsoft or NVidia drivers. One of the first important Codecs was a procedure still used today called Soundex. I believe the first proper use of Soundex was by the Mormons. Most of us use Soundex or its equivalent every time we use a spell checker. The Mormons use it in their vast database of all persons baptised by them. It enables very fast data searches on similar sounding words that are not necessarily spelled the same way. Soundex though is a one way procedure. Its a CODER The other part of the word Codec is derived from the word DECODER. Joining the two parts together we get the word CODEC...Codec. With regard to Codecs and any Video or Audio playing software. MP3 or WMA audio files have been compressed using CODER routines. When you play those files on your computer you are using the DECODER routines to produce a sound or video signal that can be seen/heard on your machine. With regard to Audio/Video editing software. A Codec is used to compress the data so that it occupies as small a space as possible usually on a hard drive. But in the case of editing a file the Codec must first expand the compressed data before the edit can occur and afterwards compress it again when the data is saved to a new file. The problems with Codecs arise from "Calls" A call is the expression used to define the way one software module talks to another so that information can be passed between the two. The problem occurs when the Call is not properly formatted, or the reply is not understood. This becomes a problem that the calling software must handle. When the calling software fails to handle the error it can do one of a number of things....the correct way is to contain the error and respond with an alternative approach and possibly inform the user that the error occurred, the other approach we are all to familiar with, either the software or the machine crashes and probably taking all of your hard work with it. 2) Movie Maker crashes, what can I do? ============================ From item one above there is a good chance that your problem arises from a problem with a Codec. Movie Maker version 2.1 was supposed to address this issue by giving you the user the ability to disable one or more of the Codecs on your machine. The problem however is not fully addressed and results in some Codecs not being exposed to the disable option. If its that particular Codec that is causing the problem you are stuck. You need to know which Codec it is, where it is, possibly what other software installed it and what other dependencies exist. In other words you need to know a LOT of things. The proper way of dealing with the issue would be to remove the offending Codec but that's not very practical as you may really need the other software that depends on it. There is a temporary solution available in the form of a program called "Rename Codecs" It has been in use for perhaps a year now by many hundreds of people and with great success. There have been a total of 6 times that the program did not solve the users problem (At the time of writing this) You can obtain your FREE copy of the program from www.the-kellys.org The basics of the program are that it will offer you the option of temporarily renaming Codecs that are known to be a problem for Movie Maker. You would do that before using Movie Maker. Once you are finished using the program you again run Movie Maker and use the RESTORE option to put those Codecs back into operation...its very easy to use. There is an additional option.     - Transition Delays after transcoding to MPEG2 Some similar posts exist but no concrete answers yet... When I create a move with pictures (MPEG) and clips (MPEG2) and add transitions between them, everything works fine in preview mode and after the WMV has been rendered. Of course, my DVD programs transcode the WMV into MPEG2 to put on a DVD (primarily NERO). After transcoding the movie file will often pause right when a transition starts for a bit before moving onto the next clip / picture. This results in a transition that stutters. This seems to be a problem with transcoding in general, as I've tried several other WMV to MPEG2 transcoders as well and the resulting MPEG does the same thing. Is there something can be done to avoid this? Clean transitions on the DVD would be nice.... I'm using WMM 2.1 for the first time and I'v e got all the pictures in place and thought I had created all the perfect titles but when I was previewing the movie.....I see that a title that was to have come up on a picture (overlay or title on picture) it does not show up at all...but instead when the title page for the next clip comes up and disappears....the rogue title comes on the following picture...therefore, it appears on the incorrect picture and no amount of "edit title" will help me find this rogue title...it's hidden from me but when you play the movie its there. I've even tried to find it by going through each clip or title via the timeline - I can't find it there either...although I see it when the next title comes up.....it's like two titles together..but when I click on edit title...the rogue title is not there.     - Preserving DV Quality: NTSC and AV-DVI Hello, experts... Our family purchased a DV camcorder last year and I have been slowly trying to do more sophisticated things using MM. Since we didn't own a DVD player initially, I had recorded all video using the High Quality NTSC option in MM. I edited and watched movies on our computer and burned it to VCDs. The quality was fuzzy, but otherwise fine. More recent movies made in MM appear much more pixelated and blurry than those I made last year. I am using the same computer to record and edit the video. When the camcorder is connected directly to the television, the original digital video quality is excellent. I don't know what might account for the observed deterioration in quality of movies made in MM, but I need to find a way to preserve high quality movies for my family. After combing through the archives of this site, it appears that the best way to preserve high quality DV footage from a camcorder is to record and burn to DVD in DV-AVI format. If that's the case, I have a couple questions: 1) My hard drive disk space only has 7 GB left. Can I free up space to have 14 GB available to record (and edit) an hour of DV-AVI footage or should I buy an external drive? 2) What type of DVD burner should I get so that we view them with an older DVD player? It appears there are multiple DVD formats... 3) Is there any way to capture DV footage using the "High Quality NTSC" option and watch it in full screen mode on the computer without all the pixelation/distortion?     - FAQ: #20050727 Crashes & Hangs Movie Maker FAQ 1 Last updated 6th January 2005 Crashing and Hanging ================ 1) What is a Codec? ============== A Codec is software that was first created to deal with the transposition of data from one form into another. One of the first important Codecs was a procedure still used today called Soundex. I believe the first proper use of Soundex was by the Mormons. Most of us use Soundex or its equivalent every time we use a spell checker. The Mormons use it in their vast database of all persons baptised by them. It enables very fast data searches on similar sounding words that are not necessarily spelled the same way. Soundex though is a one way procedure. Its a CODER The other part of the word Codec is derived from the word DECODER. Joining the two parts together we get the word CODEC...Codec. With regard to Codecs and any Video or Audio playing software. MP3 or WMA audio files have been compressed using CODER routines. When you play those files on your computer you are using the DECODER routines to produce a sound or video signal that can be seen/heard on your machine. With regard to Audio/Video editing software. A Codec is used to compress the data so that it occupies as small a space as possible usually on a hard drive. But in the case of editing a file the Codec must first expand the compressed data before the edit can occur and afterwards compress it again when the data is saved to a new file. The problems with Codecs arise from "Calls" A call is the expression used to define the way one software module talks to another so that information can be passed between the two. The problem occurs when the Call is not properly formatted, or the reply is not understood. This becomes a problem that the calling software must handle. When the calling software fails to handle the error it can do one of a number of things....the correct way is to contain the error and respond with an alternative approach and possibly inform the user that the error occurred, the other approach we are all to familiar with, either the software or the machine crashes and probably taking all of your hard work with it. 2) Movie Maker crashes, what can I do? ============================ From item one above there is a good chance that your problem arises from a problem with a Codec. Movie Maker version 2.1 was supposed to address this issue by giving you the user the ability to disable one or more of the Codecs on your machine. The problem however is not fully addressed and results in some Codecs not being exposed to the disable option. If its that particular Codec that is causing the problem you are stuck. You need to know which Codec it is, where it is, possibly what other software installed it and what other dependencies exist. In other words you need to know a LOT of things. The proper way of dealing with the issue would be to remove the offending Codec but that's not very practical as you may really need the other software that depends on it. There is a temporary solution available in the form of a program called "Rename Codecs" It has been in use for perhaps a year now by many hundreds of people and with great success. There have been a total of 6 times that the program did not solve the users problem (At the time of writing this) You can obtain your FREE copy of the program from www.the-kellys.org The basics of the program are that it will offer you the option of temporarily renaming Codecs that are known to be a problem for Movie Maker. You would do that before using Movie Maker. Once you are finished using the program you again run Movie Maker and use the RESTORE option to put those Codecs back into operation...its very easy to use. There is an additional option. You can use the options within XP to turn off the various levels of video acceleration that your graphics card has. Doing this is not a good idea but if you do you must understand that every program that relies on those abilities will either run badly or not at all. To turn the acceleration down right click your desktop and select PROPERTIES, then SETTINGS then ADVANCED and then TROUBLERSHOOT. You will then see a slider bar which should normally be positioned on the far right. You can move it one step at a time and then close the dialog down and re-try Movie Maker. You can repeat those steps until (and if) Movie Maker works properly. A lot of video programs give you the opportunity of taking a snap shot of the video displayed, Intervideo WinDVD 5 does a good job of this. Movie Maker also has this option. BUT, if you turn the acceleration down as above, you will no longer be able to take those snapshots. This is not a great problem of course as you can change the acceleration back. But it is rather tedious. 3) How do I make my system perform better and stop Movie Maker crashing ======================================================= This is by far the best way of doing things. Whilst the Rename Codec program is a MUST when you really do need to keep "other" software on your system, the following approach will ensure that your system runs at its best speed and will be less likely to crash at all from Video or Audio problems. You need to download the latest versions of DirectX and the Windows Codecs pack together with the latest version of Windows Media Player. You should NOT try to install these packages via the Internet, you should get the standalone versions. The reason is obvious once you know it. Suppose those updates you did some time back are not working properly...it may be that they were not installed properly or it may be that a file is either corrupt or simply missing. How would you know??? The more experienced may spot the problem but the average user will not. So why download the full package??? That's easy. When you unzip a package several checks are made to ensure the integrity of the files inside the zip. If there is a problem you will be told there and then...the file is corrupt or damaged in some other way....you do not need to trust an install over the Internet and the possibility of data being missed.... You can get the packages via these links... This a large download. Its not to bad if you have a reasonably fast broadband connection, but if the download fails its a long way back to the start!!! Personally I would recommend you obtain A CD version of SP2...its available on the Windows Magazine and from Microsoft directly Drivers for your graphics card ---------------------------------- I have discovered that most people are confused on the issue of drivers for their graphics card in that when advised to acquire the latest driver they go straight to the Microsoft website and get one from them. Their is a problem with that in that the drivers supplied by Microsoft are Generic. I made the mistake of going direct to Microsoft some time back and the result was that I could only run the machine in the basic "Safe Mode" the driver was the most up to date and was definitely more recent than the existing driver. It took some time to understand what was going on I must admit...... The graphics card was an NVidia GForce 4 etc and was manufactured by Gainward. After several attempts at getting the Microsoft driver to install I decided that the download MUST BE corrupted in some way, So I went to the NVidia website and downloaded their driver (Same version number as the one from Microsoft) I had the exact same problems!!! In the end I went to the Gainward website and downloaded the most up to date driver they had.....once installed the graphics card performed better than ever and with more configuration options than I would ever need. So why did an older driver work better than the most recent from NVidia ??? Its simple when you know why .... Gainward produce high capability cards and in order to achieve some of their aims they change the way the NVidia chipset works. This requires a modified driver....and they produce their own. The card is still based on the NVidia and conforms to the basic design....but it runs very much faster because of code optimisation, and that optimisation is missing from the Microsoft or NVidia drivers. The result of all this is that you should ALWAYS go to the website of the MANUFACTURER of the card and not the manufacturer of the chipset (in my case NVidia) The Method ----------------- Reboot your computer and install SP2. After the install has completed you should reboot your computer twice...yes boring but desirable After the reboot you should now install the DirectX pack and reboot again. After that reboot install the Codec Pack and reboot yet again. After that install Windows Media Player and reboot again Finally install the latest driver for your graphics card. Rebooting the machine does perform an important task. It completes installation process's and ensures that previously existing file locks are removed. Under certain conditions XP will not overwrite a file if it has been locked. Note that this is not the same as marking a file as Read Only. Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility --------------------------------------------------------------- This utility can be obtained here... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/portablemediacenter/decoder.mspx A very useful program but with a problem. It reports that I have the MGI MPEG-2 Video Decoder on one of my machines...I have NO MGI software on my system!! I would not let that put you off using it as it does have a useful purpose even though the same objective can be achieved via other already existing routes within XP. I am in favour of this program as it does give good advice on which Codec you should select as the preferred Codec 4) What files does Movie Maker NOT like? ============================== Any MPEG based file will cause Movie Maker problems even though they seldom cause problems for Media Player. There are a number of reasons...Media Player does not need the CODER part of the Codec and there are many methods/procedures/algothims used to Code an MPeg file and its that wide range of methods that Movie Maker can not address. Its not really a bug but the method of dealing with the issue, well there is no method...Movie Maker gives an error and crashes or it just crashes. The particular file extensions are Mpeg, MPG and MP3. JPeg still images can also be a problem and for similar reasons to MPeg files. There are a number of formats for a JPeg and it seems that the older formats are not properly dealt with. To work around the issue you can reduce the compression used in creating the JPeg and NOT use the progressive format method The best solution for these problems is to convert the file into a more acceptable format, and as it happens a format that is more easily worked on by Movie Maker...the conversion you should employ are MPeg, MPG convert to AVI, MP3 convert to WAV and JPeg, JPG convert to a standard bitmap BMP NOTES ====== There are several other approaches you can take to solving a Codec issue. I have seen several other methods of solving the problem, and basically they don't. Instead they treat the symptom and not the problem itself. Several other methods involve damaging the picture of your computers layout (that's a bad pun by the way) and simply doing that involves the risk of permanent damage to that picture. The program Rename Codecs also damages that picture of your system but it does at least provide a user friendly way of restoring your system and that method requires no prior knowledge on your part about where, which and how to make those changes. All efforts are made to ensure that the information is accurate. As no one is perfect I would be happy to hear of any errors found in this document (send an e-mail to webmaster@the-kellys.org).     - XP 64 and SuperPack I purchased the Plus! Supper Pack for XP to get the 50 video effects and transitions for Movie Maker.     - transition causes slow audio While editing my avi movie I can add the first few fade in/out transitions without a problem, but after about 5 transitions the audio track slows right down. Speech is about half the speed while the video continues at normal pace. If I cntrl-z to undo the transition the audio goes completely. I have to close the edit session and re-open the avi. I cant get any further with my editing. Its all a bit odd. I've checked whole discussion board and cant find anyone with this problem. Please help. -- monkey? i cant remember.     - Burn DVD from Movie Maker Once I finish all of my clips in the storybook and save as a movie file the program asked what I want to do. One option is to record to DVD. After saving and converting the file it gives me an error message "unable to record DVD due to an error" I don't know what the error is. At first I thought my movie may be too long but the DVD's are 120 minutes. My movie is only 90 minutes.     - Audio capture with Hauppage WinTV PVR MCE I'm having problems capturing audio along with my video inside of Windows Movie Maker. I have a Sony HI-8 Handycam with composite (video, left audio, right audio) and a Hauppage WinTV PVR MCE500 (2-tuner). I can capture video just fine through WMM, but no audio comes across. I've tried all the audio input choice it provides through the Hauppage to no avail. Run this program, which will allow you to select the audio source(Line In). When the audioselect program is initialized, it will place an icon on the system tray (next to the clock). Click on the "WinTV audio select" icon on the tray, which will open the dialogue. Here is where you will choose the source(ie. Line in) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But, there is no utility and I can't find it on their web site. Any one else having similar issues? I have a SONY HD90 and I'm trying to use the Signal Conversion Function to
record A/V signals from a VCR through the SONY and over firewire to my
computer.
That part works fine and Movie Maker displays the VCR image in the preview
window.
The problem is that when I tell Movie Maker to capture the video, it tells
the SONY to start playing it's digital tape and it starts recording the stuff
from the SONY tape and not the VCR.
Is there a way of just capturing the video coming in through the firewire
without Movie Maker telling the SONY to play it's tape?

This was a known problem with Movie Maker version 2.0 whereby due to a bug
the pass through feature was broken.

Either upgrade to MM 2.1 (by installing SP2) or use some other tool to
capture. I recommend:

WinDV http://windv.mourek.cz/
or DVApp http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVapp
