I was quite surprised that when I tried to save in DV AVI format, my 40 minute movie resulted in a >8GB file. I've tried other formats (e.g. Hi Quality Video) which render much smaller files but the quality is definitely inferior. Given that commercial DVDs can hold 2 hour films is it right that such a small movie won't fit on a 4.7GB DVD.

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

The DV-AVI file doesn't go onto the disc.... it'll be the MPEG2 file made
from it, which will be compressed and fit.

Thanks for that PapaJohn - much appreciated. One other favour to ask? - are there any guidelines of DV AVI to MPEG2 compression rates so that I can make sure that I don't go creating movies that are too big! My >7GB DV AVI file would appear to compress to ~2GB (according to MyDVD) but is it just as simple as applying that algorithm to other movies

Once again - many thanks

There's a nice chart at http://www.dvdrhelp.com/comparison

My personal rough rules of thumb are that about an hour of high quality
video fits on a DVD disc - for playing on a TV, and about an hour of high
quality video fits on a CD disc - for playing on a computer.

Well actually you have to purchase dvd authoring software to prepare the vob
files which reside on a dvd they are compressed differently from avi files.
This ishow you will fit 2 hours on a dvd.
(if only windows movie maker could allow for raw avi file saving!, a guy can
wish..)
