I'm trying to save a MM movie to the computer but when it's done and I try to
play it the movie stalls out at a certain point. The project has about 400
pictures (runtime should be about 50 minutes) and a couple of audio files.
I've already tryed to burn it to a DVD but that errors out...I suspect by
whatever is causing the above problem. Any thoughts? Is there a limit to
the number of pix you can have in a project.

see the Problem Solving > Can't Save a Movie page of my website... there
isn't a limit, but if you're system's memory isn't sufficient to handle the
complexity of the project, it won't finish properly.

Is 1 GB not enough memory???!!! I notice that when I add video effects
(fade-ins and fade-outs) I get this problems. If I take them out it works
fine but what's the point in using MM then.

if it's the previewing of a project or a movie after it's saved, it would be
more about your hard drive condition and capability than a RAM issue.

I really appreciate you taking the time in helping me out - Thanks!

As I mentioned above I have 1 GB of mem. I also have a 140 GB hard drive.
The computer - a Pentium 4 - is, maybe, a month old. The version of MM is
2.1.4026.0 (I suspect I do not need to update MM) When I "save to the
computer" the process takes nearly 45 minutes! I also have, maybe, 400
images in this movie. I hope I'm not over-taxing the app.

Is there a diagnostic you can recommend that I run? I'm providing as much
info I can think of.

Thanks for your help.

What choice are you making when you save the movie to your computer? Try a
Pocket PC choice and view it... if it plays perfectly, then you know a saved
movie is fine and it's an issue with playing it.... which doesn't involve
Movie Maker.

What types of pictures and audio are you using?
The problems you are describing fall in line with what sometimes happens
with JPG images and with MP3 audio.

Re: Saved MM movie plays up to a point by Mojo

I am using JPEGs and MP3s. I could use Wave files but are they not about 10
times the size as MP3s. Anyway, As PapaJohn suggested I tryed Pocket
Computer and that previewed fine in WMP. My ultimate goal is to play this on
TV via a DVD player. When I "save to my computer" I can select the format
but I do not seem to have a choice when I save to DVD. As a reminder, I
started having problems after I put in the fade-ins and fade-outs but before
the music.

Also, this PC is about a month old, I would hope all the installed S/W is
up-to-date. I don't know what else to add except that I just now had to
Ctrl-Alt-Del out of MM since it seens to have locked-up. At 1 GB of RAM I
believe I have about 4000 times what is required to run MM.

Anyway, thank you both for helping me out.

I wouldn't use WAV just for that reason but I would convert to WMA.
Also sometimes JPG is fine sometimes it isn't so I have converted all of
mine to BMP.
Your right you don't have the option when you choose Save to DVD but I never
recommend that people do that anyway, it causes too many silver coasters,
but instead recommend saving to the computer and then importing into your
DVD Authoring program (in your case Sonic MyDVD).
You can save as Pocket PC but not as DV-AVI which still could be because of
the MP3's or JPG's but could also be a complexity issue especially if you
have transitions between all of those 400 pictures!
For this see the How-To Split up a project due to complexity issues how-to
on my website. (Video Editing -> Movie Maker) for specific instructions. The
requirement of memory to run MM is meaningless since it makes a difference
how complex the project is. Also I would like to add that if you are only
working with still images and music then Photo Story 3 is a much better
suited program to use. It has more transitions and far better control over
the timing. You can download PS3 here:

So far so good. I have created a 3-part slideshow of our Appalachian Trail
trip. The 13-minute test DVD plays great on the TV and the 3 media files
play in MS Media Player with no problem. I still need to edit the pans and
zooms then add a soundtrack. I'm confident this will turn out great.

THANKS A TON!!!
