Let's say I want to create a compilation video, adding clips to it over time
via Windows XP Moviemaker. Would the constant adding of more clips to the
movie file degrade the quality of the file itself?

You should be able to sucessfully re-edit
your .mswmm Project file until it grows to
the point that your computer's resources
are strained. (File / Save Project As...or
press...F12)

I would suggest that you save each
successive edit session as a new file
with a different name. This way you can
drop back if errors begin to appear.

One thing to remember...do not move or
delete any of the original source files from
your computer because Movie Maker only
archives the path...not the actual files.

Thanks for the response! :)

However, my question was: if I keep editing the same video FILE (i.e. WMV),
does the quality degrade over time?

Sorry, I thought you would be editing the
project file and not the completed .wmv
or .avi movie file.

It stands to reason that repetitive re-saves
of any highly compressed file would result
in quality loss.

IMHO however you choose to do the process, it should work. One way may be
better per the MVP's, I assume it would be before you made a new burn, i.e.
working with your initial screen and the sometimes disappearing images
replaced with X's, your timeline, music fades etc.
There to add the new.
HOWSOEMEVER
Once you get a'rockin the viewer gets forgotten??? Suggest a series of
smaller video pieces in completed form, THEN you can add and subract modivy
easily at any time.
What he said was NO 90 minute + movies.
Been there done that too dragged out for viewer in spite of the DVD marking
where you stopped.
