Whenever I use anykind of video effect, whether its a transition, effect or title, Windows Movie Player completely closes without any warning window or anything. It's just gone from the screen including the task bar. This didn't use to be the case and it been a while since I've used it so I suppose it could be any number of things. WMM version 1
I was using version 1 and imported some video files
from 'Click on dvd' (.vob file extension).
When I got an error and sent the report to Microsoft,
they suggested upgrading to version 2 - which I did.
Now, using version 2, I can no longer import the .vob
files.
How can I go back to version 1?
Is there any other software that can read a .vob file,
other than 'click on dvd'? Tag: Royalty free music Tag: 10824
converting avi files and other problems
Hello - I used WMM to create some clips (small slideshows created on Plus! Story software) and must be doing this the hard way. It's in fine quality on WMM, but then I save it to an avi file, then import it into Dazzle Movie Star to burn to a VCD so need to convert the avi to mpeg. By the time all this is done, I do get a VCD but the quality has really suffered. What am I doing wrong???????????Thanks. Tag: Royalty free music Tag: 10822

Crashes when saving to DV-AVI
Papajohn and others
I have a 15 minute slide show created in MM2 complete with titles, transitions, effects and audio. When I go to save it as a DV-AVI file, after saying it is about 12 percent complete (approximately 10 after starting to save) I get an error message saying that the program must close. I have noticed that the time remaining increases all the while the file is being saved (upwards of 30 minutes) instead of decreasing. I have an HP computer with a Pentium 4 and a very large hard drive. Please advise on how I can get past this and what should be the normal time for my computer to save this size file
Thanks

PapaJohn! I found a fix to some Capture Problems!
I have posted before and read postings by others unable to
capture video from their DV camcorder through their IEEE
1394 port. Well, I finally fixed my problem and I thought
that I would be nice and share with everyone else that had
similar problems to mine:
My System:
Pentium 4
Windows XP Pro
Motherboard (built-in) IEEE 1394
DirectX 9.0b
My Problem:
Windows would recognize my Camcorder (Sony DCR-TRV27) when
plugged in via IEEE 1394, but every time I tried to
capture, I got the error:
"An Unknown Error Has Occurred" (Please check video device
to see that it is not being used by another device ....
etc.)
I WAS able to play, rewind, etc. from the computer
(transport controls), but no video capture.
My Fix:
In desperation, I downloaded the Trial Version of Adobe
Premiere. After installation, Premiere was able to
capture video fine. I went back and tried Movie Maker 2,
and it TOO was able to capture fine at this point.
The Reason?:
I know that Premiere re-installed DirectX 9.0b when I
installed Premiere. My guess is that there was some sort
of driver conflict that was worked out with this
installation. Anyway, I'm a much happier person now that
my firewire connection works with my system. So far, no
missed frames, good audio.
I hope this helps people who have had similar problems.

Cannot capture neither create movies anymore
Hi everyone. Just suddenly, I cannot capture video anymore from my Panasonic camcorder neither create a movie after having edited it. The hardware link is fine because I did a video test capture with VideStudio and it worked ok.
For the first problem I'm getting "Capturing profiles cannot be found" and for the latter, on the Save Movie Wizard, "No LOC needed - Autolayout placeholder string".
And when I try to save the movie (to the PC), the screen is overlayed with text from other options... And it goes to an endless loop where I'm getting (randomly) 30611855 more or less minutes to create a 13 minutes movie!!!
I've re-installed MM2, re-booted the PC and re-launched MM but with same results as before.
Earlier, I received a Windows XP error message that a "mscoree.dll" was missing (which I've managed to download and re-install back).
Thx for your help if someone has an idea how to solve this mistery.

Saving
I have a large hard drive (106GB), so I am able to do large projects. I have a problem with saving my movie as a movie file so it can be compatible with Sonic MyDVD. When I save the movie as a movie file (to My Computer), it saves about 3/4 to 85% of the movie and then stops saving. I know this because the CPU usage goes to zero and the minutes remaining begin to increase instead of decrease. I know that it takes a long time to render into a different format, but I have left it for long periods of time and the program makes no more progess saving the movie. I've heard that some computers weren't designed to have such big hard drives, so when a file or project is that big, it is impossible for the computer to handle it or something, like a safety feature. I don't know. Is there anything I can do? Tag: Royalty free music Tag: 10780
Preventing WMM from controlling camera
I want to use a Sony TRV33E as an analogue (VCR) to digital converter (which you can). In this setup the video stream can be captured over the FireWire from the camera and the video control is via a VCR. While software such as Adobe Premiere is quite happy to capture a free flowing stream without any attempt at controlling the camera, the WMM is trying to start the camcorder's tape, thus shutting off the analogue signal conversion. WMM is actually capable of displaying the converted video from the FireWire, the problem however is how to stop it from interfering with the camcorder's controls - I cannot see anyway of making the camera to ignore such software requests. Any ideas

Can MM2 do same effects as PhotoStory?
Love PhotoStory, love MM2, now want to create videos with both stills and videos. MM2 has great transitions for still images but appears ot lack the zooms, pans, etc that PhotoStory has. Does anyone know if I can create the same zoom, pan, etc effects in MM2 for still images like those in PhotoStory?

error: "video device is not resonding"
I bought a 8300 dell computer recently (two months ago). The Roxio VideoWave Movie Creator software was inistall at the factory and it works fine. My video capture device is: Dell Movie Studio Video Device. I realized I have the "Windows Movie Maker 5.1" on my computer today but having problems. So anyway, I pressed the capture button and I can see the "size of video file increasing" but the "video captured" reading stays at 0:00:00. I assume it is not capturing. After approx. 20seconds I and pressed the stop capture button and then the finish button. Then I get an error message which states: The specified video device is not responding. Verify that the device is connected propely and turned on and then try capturing again
I tried to capture the video the same exact way but using the Roxio VideoWave Moive Creator and it worked fine
I tried again using WMM again with the same error message. Have can I get WMM and my "video device" see eye to eye

Pentax OptioS4-MPEG-Audio Problems-Solution(s)
Thanks to the help of PapaJohn and others this problem has been solved.
Problem: The AVI video files created by this camera have a PCM codec sound
component. PCM is a codec which is included as standard in XP Professional.
Therefore, the file plays perfectly, sound and vision, in Windows Media
Player, Real Player and when imported into Collections in Movie Maker2.
The problem starts when the file is dragged to Storyboard in MM2. The video
plays fine, but the sound becomes totally distorted.
Apparently, for reasons best known to Microsoft, MM2 converts(?) the audio
element to MPEG in the Storyboard.
Solution: This requires the downloading and installation of an MPEG Encoder.
I have downloaded and tried two. The locations are here>
http://www.flydragonsoft.com/products.htm
Scroll down to.......AVI to MPEG Converter
and.............. http://www.mainconcept.com/products.shtml
The first one cost $29.95. The second one costs $149.
The more expensive one has a far more sophisticated interface. Quite simply,
you can do a lot more to the file.
But, to my VERY inexperienced eye, the resulting converted files look
equally disimproved! Unless I am doing something wrong in the conversion,
the file just isn't as good when I finally get it to play in Storyboard as
when it plays back in Collections (i.e. unconverted).
I would be interested in more expert opinion on either of these converters
and on the tweaking (if any) that one should perform during conversion.
However, as I said in another thread just above this one, I can't see why we
should have to go through this in the first place!!

Audio Problems - MPEG Encoders - PapaJohn please read.
PapaJohn,
In my other thread above you wrote.........
"Movie Maker automatically uses whatever codecs are available on your
computer,"
Isn't that the point at issue here? (By the way, I sorted the problem. See
next thread.)
The AVI files from my Pentax camera, containing PCM audio files, play
perfectly in Windows Media Player and also in Windows Movie Maker, when
imported into Collections.
The trouble only begins when they are dragged to Storyboard when, as someone
discovered, MM2 converts them to MPEG.
This begs the question.......why try to change the file at all? Secondly,
why try to change it into something for which a default codec is not
available? Even worse, a codec for which one has to pay extra?
You wrote: "MPEG2 codecs are licensed for a fee, so you wouldn't expect
anyone to
include it in a routine free update, so it couldn't be by default."
Fair enough. But, it seems to me that Microsoft are slipping up bigtime here
and whatever quirk in MM2 causes it to do this in Storyboard should be
addressed.
Thanks for all you help. You've been fantastic!

Telling others how to open my CD
I have tried several permutations to get my vcd's and c-dvd's to play on computers other than the computer that created them. I have MM2 and created a fabulous movie which I saved in dv-avi. Then I used Roxio to record them in the various formats
I now have 10 cds, and none of them can be opened on all computers, just a couple on this computer, and a couple on that computer..
I then tried to capture the video directly into Roxio and burn from there, but again, there are no reliable results. I thought creating the video in Roxio would make it more compatible with Roxio's encoding process, but so far, it doesn't seem to be any better than creating the movie in MM2 and saving as dv-avi & importing it into Roxio. Am I missing a step in Roxio
So far, the best and most universal disc I have been able to do is to create a VCD (via mm2 to roxio) which requires the users to open their windows media player (or quicktime for mac users), and then, from within the player, manually open one of the 5 files which will appear. Then the video opens.
I am using these cd's to promote my business and I am worried that a potential customer will not go to all of the trouble to open these cd's
The only good side to this last cd is that I tried it on 4 computers and the "manual" way worked on all of them
Is there a better way? Should I just include instructions for opening my cd's when I send them

Splits screen to show video and credits at the end.
I guessed MM2 doesn't support that. I know MM2 supports
adding credits at the end of the movie, but it probably
doesn't support overlay another video.

thing? Basically, at the end of the movie, I want to
