I am doing a lot of video editing of home movies on my
PC. These files sizes range from about a gig to up to 8
gig. I am using Windows Movie Maker v5.1 (service pack 2)
to take this from my camcorder to the PC and using
Windows Media Player v10 to play them once edited and
saved. My process using Windows Movie Maker is to take my
tapes from the camcorder and save them as a raw DV-AVI
file, then edit them and re-save with the content I want
to keep (also as a DV-AVI file).

I am running a DELL PC, windows XP, a gig of memory,
Pentium 4 2.8 ghz and a video card with 128 meg of ram.

Here's my problem - my PC is having problems sometimes
opening the video files I have created. When I boot up, I
can open a file without issue. After one or more files
has been opened/viewed, sometimes I have a problem when I
double click to open another video file. The window that
I am using to view all my files freezes and I get a
message that the window is no longer responding. I am
then unable to open any more of these files until I re-
boot. I am still able to open other windows and launch
other applications. This seems to be a problem realated
to either WMP or WMM or both? This is causing me a lot of
problems.

Please Advise!!!

Hello,

You sound as though you have exceeded Movie Makers capacity. Close the
program down every now and then. This will release some file locks and
"might" allow some housekeeping to be done as the program closes.

Is there a video capturing/editing package you would
recommend?

Hello,

Thank you for asking. I have tried a few and have to say that Movie Maker
is better than all of them with a couple of exceptions...MovieDV and
MovieXone.

MovieXone is available from time to time as a free program on magazine
cover disks. Its interface is almost identical to MovieDV

MovieDV the big brother of MovieXone is available from www.aist.com or .de
It has many more features one of which is the 11 video
tracks...True....using those eleven tracks you can have true picture in
picture moving each track to any position you like within the main
picture...I'm using the word picture but it really means any Video or still
picture. There are a few samples on my website..."Doodles" is just a bit of
fun using 5 tracks I think...not sure. MovieDV is more difficult than Movie
Maker and has many more options as a result....it costs US$60

A trip to one of my favourite web sites www.videohelp.com would be a good
place to look for programs and information on them...there is also a
magazine called PC Utilities. It contains a lot of video editing
programs..mostly free. I'm not sure whether its monthly or quarterly There
is also a website owned by the publishers where for a small fee you can
download MOUNTAINS of software...I don't have the link at hand...if you are
interested and would like it I should be able to find it for you.
