Cannot open capture device
I just upgraded to Movie Maker 2. Movie Maker 1.1 worked
just fine with my hardware, however, everytime I hit the
capture from video device button, I get a message saying
the device is in use. I know that it isn't in use - there
aren't any applications that can use my video device
running at the time. As I said earlier, the previous
version worked fine. Has anyone else encountered this?

Re: Catastrophic Failure
Well I checked the gif file and the dimensions are
639x476, it contains about 300 frames, and it's about 90
seconds long. It doesn't seem like its that big, but I
guess I don't know all of the technical constraints of
Movie Maker.
Also, to help you out and let you know, if you see loss
of quality in your gif file on the storyboard/videostream
screen, the quality will return to almost perfect on the
movie when you've saved it as a movie file.

saving MM2 project to CD
I am unable to save my completed project to my CD burner
(Lite-on) or my DVD Burner (pioneer a106) which will butn
a CD or a DVD+/-. The only options I see are save to
hard Drive.--- That works.
QUESTION- How do I get MM2 to recognise thet I have two
available "burners" installed?
I'm using a XP sp1/amd 2.0G/512meg ram/2 80gig HD/ and
importing AVI raw video plus .jpg stills.

Movie Maker
My goal is to create a slideshow that has ~800 photos in
it with around 14 music clips. The file says that it is
about 400 MB big and the CD should hold about 700.
I have broken it down into 3 smaller files to see if I
can get it to create, it doesn't really freeze the
computer, but say the initial create time is 60 minutes,
it gets about 30-50% complete and then the time just
keeps increasing and no more completion.
I have been successful with a small 30 photo slideshow
with music....but nothing larger.
Also, with the small video I did create, the slideshow
did not fill the screen when played....It had like a tv
looking screen with sound, play, etc. buttons....Will it
fill the screen so that each picture covers the screen. Tag: Problem adding video clip Tag: 4207

when it's actually capturing the video the actual video
in the preview window is distorted so I can't see what
I'm capturing. But I can hear the audio just fine.I've
checked all the settings and made sure there not in PAL

I am able to cpture the entire tape in the cam, but the
option to capture only a part of it doesn't work. I can
contrle the cam and when clicking on "start capture" it

clicking "stop capture" an error messages says I should
check the connections because nothing has been captured.
Connections should be fine, as I could capture under the

Papa John.... Fire wire drivers
any suggestions on where i can get the lates fire wire
drivers?
Eric,
It seems like you are narrowing it down to a firewire
card or driver issue
(download/install the latest driver for starters), or a
firewire cable issue
(borrow and try a different one for starters)

Re: Catastrophic Failure
Animated Gifs arn't supported as video files, but are
however accepted as picture files. Which means they can
be accepted through the 'Import Pictures' function. As I
have said in my previous statement, my other .gif files
were accepted. When you equip them to the
videostream/storyboard and hit play, they play out the
animation of the animated gif.
*Helpful Hint for those who want to make their own
original Intro/Credits*
The actual problem was that it wont accept the one
certain larger .gif file. THE OTHERS WORK FINE. My
question is;
Is there a problem with the image importing portion,
seeing all of the 'loss of quality' posts and if so,
would that particular portion of the program have a limit
to the size of files it accepts.

Audio/Music tracks
Hi -
Movie Maker is great, but it's audio controls appear to be
lacking. I want to have background music in my video, but
I cannot see how to control things like fade in or out or
volume with any kind of precision.
There are no controls on the audio/music track in the
storyboard that let's me visually see where volume changes
or fade in and out occurs, so I cannot precisely
synchronize with the video and audio track.
Any tips about how better to control the audio settings?
Are there any add-ons I can buy that will help with this?

Hello There,
For posterity, I think its important that this fix be
listed here.
For some unknown reason, Windows Movie Maker started

The capture had previously been working flawlessly for

After finding no reference to this issue on the web, a

DV-AVI format
Having a bit of difficulty with this format...
When saving to DV-AVI format, MM2 saves the file at 352 x 288, even though
the source file is 640 x 480. This is bad enough for video footage, but even
worse for any titles/graphics I have added as they look appalling at this
resolution.
The only way I can save a movie at a high res (640 or over) is in WMV
format, which is fine until I convert to MPEG2 for SVCD creation.

Audio problems when recording back to tape Help!!!!
I have a problem with the audio track (background music)

video is edited with various clips from a longer video.
When I try to put my project back to tape (from computer

second. I think the original video audio is causing the
problem and have muted it and done everything else but
the music track still jumps when the video changes to a
different scene. I even recorded the entire video back

it in a new project with the audio track and it still
jumps. I can't figure this one out, someone please help Tag: Problem adding video clip Tag: 4144

appear to be stuck on one particular movie, shot in may.
Now, although I can load clips I've taken onto my own

myself) come out as this one particular movie dated back
in May. I cant get rid of it. Even though the file
properties show the new clips, when I send them , they
still turn out to be this same one.
The only possible explanation I can come up with is that
in mid may, I got Movie maker updated to movie maker 2, I
cant remember where from. I've a feeling the trouble
stems from then. Is there a patch I need, or should I do
a system restore back to may, as I dont know how else to

than do a system restore.

Terrible video output & green screens on clip library
Hello,
First, thanks to Papa John's fixes page, I was able to

Secondly, I have a huge problem. My video output is

have uninstalled codecs (Nimo Codec Pack), I have
recompressed any clips I'm using into mpegs, I've
defragged, upgraded to DirectX 9.0b, Windows Media 9, and
still I cannot make WMM2 stop rendering my finished movies
into... crap. Most of the time I can't even make out the
difference between the scenery and the people in the clip
(but the audio is just fine, which indicated to me that it
was a video codec... which is why I uninstalled
everything).
As if that weren't enough, most of the clips in my clip
library (which I have set to thumbnails) are green. They
were green before I uninstalled the extra codecs, and
after.
I'm beginning to wonder if WMM2 is just designed to give
you poor results if you're not using proprietary media
from Microsoft. Tag: Problem adding video clip Tag: 4114
unable to install movie maker
Hi,
I have a problem installing windows movie maker. I used
to have this program installed but somehow lost it on my
computer. I've tried to install it again from
Microsoft.com but failed. The file moviemk.exe is nowhere
to be found on my computer. Does anybody have a
suggestion on how to solve this problem?
Thanks!

How do I improve Picture Quality
Someone please tell me if there is a way to improve
picture quality in movie maker. I tried making a movie
with pictures I had burned to a cd from a photo developing
website. Looking at the photos they are beautiful, but
when I import them into movie maker and play the movie on
full screen they are of very poor quality.
Is there a way to fix this? Tag: Problem adding video clip Tag: 4110
Movie Maker Sound
Can i control the sound of an imported music file during
the middle of a movie? ie: i have imported a video of a
person talking and a music file into the timeline. when
the person is talking in the middle of the movie clip, i
want to fade out or lower the volume of the music file
playing so you can hear what the person is saying and
then raise the music volume back up after they are done
talking. is there anyway to do that? thanks for your
help Tag: Problem adding video clip Tag: 4107
MM2 projects
Hi All--
I have saved multiple projects that I'd like to now
combine into a final movie. Should I render each project
to a final movie and then stitch them together, or is
there a way within the "project" settings to do it a
better way?
Thanks.

Ok!!! Big Problem!!!! My friends and i recently got
together for a reunion, i recorded the events with my JVC
Digital camcorder, with MiniDV, model no. GR-DVL320U. I
promised everyone that I'd edit the footage with my
computer, VAIO Windows XP Home, PCV-RX755. I transfered
the files to my computer, with Movie Maker 2 Video
Capture Wizard, using AR Acoustic Research proseries II
IEEE 1394 4 pin to 6 pin cable. I edited it using Movie
Maker 2, but when i transfered the finished product back
to my camcorder, the audio had breaks in some parts
making the quality really bad. We've experienced this
problem before and were told to send it to get cleaned,
but the problem was only temporarily fixed. We tried
contacting JVC, but they've been not very much help.

QASF.DLL
while trying to capture a movie with movie maker 2 i
recieved an error that said mm had to close. When i looked
in the event viewer the report it said Faulting module
qasf.dll version 9.0.
I also noticed i could not manually capture any video.the
size of the file would stay at 3Kb but the minutes would
pass.
I had a look at papajohn.org bit it only said about
updating the dll file om 6.0 to 9.0.

White bar obscures clips - MM1_XP-VHS
Some VHS video feeds to MM1 are obscured by a horizontal white bar filling
the middle 1/3 of clip image. In one case this occurred with every second
clip ; in another every third clip and in another all clips were clear. All
clips 'run' ok with sound but the white bars obscure the clips for short
while. Has anyoone any idea what may cause this intermittent problem? TIA Tag: Problem adding video clip Tag: 4071
Some VHS d/l clips obscured by horizontal bar in MM1
I have just got started and have d'l three VHS videos
into MM1 - All works well EXCEPT - in one case a white
horizontal bar obscures the middle 1/3 of every second
clip and in the other case obscures every third clip.In
the third case there is no bar at all and it works
perfectly. When the "barred" clips are run they respond
correctly with sound and motion and the white bar seems
to disapear automatically after a moment of clip running.
I have to experiment further; however has anyone
experienced this phenomina??? TIA russ Tag: Problem adding video clip Tag: 4070
1394 video capture with Sony MICROMV IP-55
I have just upgraded my Digital Video Camera from a Sony
Handycam to a Sony MICROMV IP55.
Neither movie-maker or the Sony supplied Pixel software
recognises the 1394 connection. It is fine on both SW
packages for the Handycam.
When I look on the hardware profile the Handycam is
recognised as an imaging device but the MICROMV is listed
as a multifunction device in the Sound, Video games
listing. Trouble shooting just asks question on audio
Anyone know what could be wrong
I have tried to re-install and on 2 computers but with
same result
Both are running Windows XP

mm2 stop responding
When using mm2 it stops responding. Doesn't do it all
the time and if I let it sit for awhile it will start
running again. I talked to other people who have said
that they have the same problem. Is there a fix for this
problem? Tag: Problem adding video clip Tag: 4065

operating.
i captured the video in dv-avi format.
i also captured video in .wmv
