A nice tool and I'm getting along very well, but there is one thing I didn't yet understand : If i have a, lets say 10 second clip, how can I apply an effect, for example the slow down effect for the period from second 3-7 ?. So the clip would have normal speed until the 3rd second, then from 3-7 slowmotion, and from 7-10 normal speed again. Would be nice if somebody could help me with that.     - Audio and Video in Playback stop Hi, my problem is that when I create a movie on the timeline, I can start the preview, but after a few seconds of playback the video freezes and all the sound stops. I've run a virus scan and nothing showed up, and I'm pretty sure I haven't had any codec problems. This happened before, and I don't want to reinstall MM again, so any help would be appreciated. Once I dragged it on the timeline it won't play - BUT: If I click on the second clip (while the mp3 is running) it actually works. Dito for the following clips. I read here that MM doesn't like mp3.     - Changing Default Aspect Ratio to 640 x 480: Error Message Hello. I'm using Windows XP Home, SP-2, on a Dell Dimension 8400 computer. This question involves capturing video to a WMV file. The aspect ratio of the WMV I've been making is too small. I noticed the default setting is 320 x 240, which for me is too small. I reset the aspect ratio to 640 x 480, and this is the error message I got: "The video device is currently in use. Close any other application that is using the device and try again." I get this message all the time, no matter what. In fact, I've formatted my hard drive, reinstalled Windows XP and just a few other things (including the Hauppauge Win TV 2000 drivers), and tried making a WMV capture again. I can't get the aspect ratio changed. Can anyone please tell me what is causing this error, and if there is a workaround for it?     - Movie Maker Hangs I have a new system with 2gb of memory, Windows MCE 2005 with SP2. Also, what I believe to be the latest version of MovieMaker. My project consists of about 50 photos. Too many times when I try to drag the timeline cursor, Movie Maker will just hang, typically with an East/West cursor. My only recourse is to kill the task. I think it seems to happen mostly if I try to drag the time-line too quickly, but I'm not sure. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a later version of Movie Maker?     - Movie Maker stops capturing 15 min into a 1hr miniDV tape While trying to capture all of a 1hour mini DV tape Movie Maker will only record the first 15 minutes and while it still syas that it is capturing, the time & the file size do not continue to increase. A task manager check of applications shows that the System Idle process is using 98% of the cycles. And, the cameras time counter is at over 30 minutes while the capture counter has only reached 15 minutes. This is the first time I have ever tried using Movie Maker, and I do have an nVidia 6600GT graphics card in my box, with driver version 7.7.7.7 from July 2005. Also uning a Sony mini DV DCR-HC32 camcorder for playback via firewire. Anyone else have a similar prob?     - Importing recorded video saved via Media Center? I'm very new to MM so please be gentle. I have recorded some programs on my PC using Media Center and want to import them into MM. Under capture video I can capture from device or import video. I have captured video from my Sony Digital8 camera just fine and it looks like I can capture "live" TV with the video card in the pc but how do I access a show (video) that I recorded? I tried the "Import Video" but I don't know where Media Center stores recorded programs or even the file ext used.     - "Anchoring" Audio Clips to Adjacent Video in Timeline Can it be done? I'm working on a promo video for a singer friend, which will be a collage of clips from various performances. The video (and poor-quality audio) were captured from DV tape shot at the events. I also have good-quality audio clips dubbed straight from the mixer board. BAsically I'm adding the good audio clips to the timeline, shifting until they synchronize with the poor audio on the video clips, and then muting the bad audio. The problem is that I have 4 or 5 video and a corresponding 4 or 5 audio clips to combine into one 3-minute feature. If I decide to fine-tune anything on the video line (such as slightly stretching a fade), I lose audio synch for that clip as well as all following clips. I can re-synch, but it's annoying. I've tried saving each individual clip with it's synched audio, and then combining the 4 or 5 clips, but that turns out to be far too restrictive of any tweaking I might want to do. Basically I want each sub-clip to start with a title and fade to video, with the synched audio fading in before the video transition (somewhere in the middle of the title). And I want to be able to make length and transition adjustments to the title without de-synching the sound from the main video. BTW, thanks to all who emailed me and recommended reading the "Zero to Hero" book, I bought it and it's helpful. But it's just reinforcing what I'm beginning to suspect, ie MM2 is a great tool for a beginner to get his feet wet, but perhaps it falls short in flexibility once you want to get a little more creative. thanks, Martin Tag: Poor capture quality on Sony Digital8 Tag: 43575

    - Saving MovieMaker or Photostory output to DVD's I have made completed several projects with Moviemaker and Photostory. When using the .wmv files and Roxio Easy Media creator 7.5 I am having numerous problems. When writing to dvd-r's I have some success but a lot of pauses and skips. When writing to dvd +rw's I appear to have total success. All of the dvd+rws play on my home dvd player. When writing to dvd+r's, I have had no success. All of the DVD's I have created work fine on my computer. My dvd burner is at least 3 years old and my home dvd player is 4 years old. Does anyone have any suggestions.     - Movie Maker has stopped reconizing my Panasonic PV-DC252 mini DV I have used my palmcorder with firewire (IEEE) connection and Movie Maker in the past but in the last month it will not reconize my palmcorder.     - Problems with fire wire or movie maker I used Movie Maker to edit video from my sony mini dv and 8mm digital. I also use Sonic to direct burn my tapes. I burned about 20 tapes, and I came back to extract video to mm to edit from my 8mm digital. Now my camera screen says I have dv in but movie maker won't recognize my camera.     - Movie Maker Dies... I have some video that I have extracted using Intervideo DVD Copy product. Basically I have extracted a small chapter from a disc. I need to edit the file to shorten it.. so I thought I would use the Movie Maker for that. When I import the video I get a critical error and basically I am told that memory could not be read at some hex location... and then when I click ok the program dies.     - Audio on storyboard too fast We can play a MPG file in MS Media Player just fine. We can preview the same clip in MM just fine. When we move the clip to storyboard, the sound is compressed to half the time and it sounds like a chipmunk.     - Can't hear audio track (& fading) Hi I can't hear one of the audio tracks when playing the full movie. I can hear it if I play it on it's own.     - Saving a Video file as original 304 x 224, is there a easier way? I have created a Divx 6 video. I want to edit this file using Windows Movie Maker. Once I've edited this video, and saved it as a High Small Video File it changes divx to wmv and also the video to 320 x 240 different from original.     - Undesired "Funhouse Mirror" Effect when Rotating Clip Input file is MPEG-4 in .avi format, 640x480 pixels, from my Canon S1-IS digital camera. When I captured the video, the camera was rotated 90 degrees. After import into moviemaker, I rotated the clip 90 degrees to set things right, but moviemaker apparently "stretched" the result in the horizontal direction (instead of inserting bars or something), so now the aspect ratio of objects and and people is messed up. How can I rotate my clip without messing up the aspect ratio? Re-capturing the scene is not an option, it was a once-only opportunity.     - merging projects I have created several projects using WMM(v5.1). I would like to combine these different projects into one video to record back to my camcorder or to save to my hard drive in order to then record it onto a dvd using Sonic. I have a Sony Digital8 DCR-TRV280, that has poor capture quality.

I have conneted to my laptop with the "I-DV/USB" cable. I tried the adjust
the Video settings/output size, but the best resolution I can chose is
320x240. It also will not let me chose the DV-AVI to save the movie.

The output is of 320x240 is so low that playback is bad. Is this the best to
expect or should I start to look at other software packages?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You need to capture video via firewire. USB is lower quality. Get a firewire
card (if you don't already have one) and a cable. Then capture as DV-AVI.
