After placing in the timeline a video clip from my digital camera the audio sounds like a high pitched screech. When the clip is played directly in mediaplayer there are no problems.

It's probably a codec issue with MPEG2 source files. Playback/importing of
MPEG2 content is completely dependant on the third party MPEG2 decoder
installed on your computer. Most do not work well. See the Importing Source

Guess I missed the file format of .avi so it's not an MPEG2 issue. Looks
like your camera uses Motion JPEG for video... so it's still looking like a
codec issue.

Have you tried using your soundcard as the default capture device(for audio). I did and the audio quality overall had less hiss and more clarity.
