PROGRAM CLOSES

Whenever I open a saved project the program closes. This also happens when i click on the "video effects" and "transitions". Initially when i click on them they would show a short preview on the right of the screen of the effect i'd get ; now when i do that there's no preview, it just closes the program. I've downloaded some codecs, could that be a problem and how can i go abt fixing it.
