Need to go back to MM1

Earlier this year I downloaded and installed Movie Maker
2. I'm finding that it is a beta version, which may
explain why it keeps locking and Task Mgr reports it
as "Not Responding." All I have is the restore CDs from
Compaq, not the actual Windows XP CD, so I'm not sure if
MM1 can be re-installed without completely reloading
Windows.

Does Microsoft provide a MM1 download from their web
site? I have looked at Papa John's web site for help and
know that there is a MM subdirectory under Program
Files. It only contains the executable and some dll
files. All I need to do is to copy those from somewhere
and dump them in that folder.

Yeah, I know, find a friend with XP and copy the files.
Not so easy to do sometimes, plus local PC shops want to
charge to restore some files.

Any suggestions?

Why not just download the latest NON-BETA version of Movie Maker 2 from
Microsoft?

Here are a few other things as well. Not sure if you have
addressed these or not yet. I would load up with WMM ver
2 first of all. It will have he latest fixes addressed.

Make sure that you have plenty of horse power under the
hood. 1.2MHZ CPU and 512 RAM should be the minimum.
Anything less and your PC will not be able to handle the
task very well. WMM locking up your PC is usually an
indication that the hardware is maxed out. WMM as well as
any other video editing apps are very demending.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for everything you
have.

Make sure you have the latest Direct X version installed.

Thanks John, I just did that (downloaded from my work LAN
PC...11MB at 56K from home is a real turtle). I will try
to install later today. In my earlier attempts to resolve
this, several monthas ago, I was told by someone in this
newsgroup that MM2 at that time was a beta version. Also
R.A.M., in the previous reply suggested increasing RAM
(that's a coincidence!) which I will also look into. I
think I'm at 256 right now.

Hi there,

Yes you can never have too much RAM...on the new 64bit machines you will
for the first time in the public market, you will actually be able to talk
about TERRA Bytes of RAM...

Please note that up to a certain limit (I don't know what it is for XP)
Windows will grab a share for its exclusive use so for example if you add
1GB to your system, that will not give you 1GB of free RAM.

I have recently been looking at buying some 2GB DDR RAM sticks....at least
I was until I saw the price...roughly £800 each plus VAT was the one
quote....that's maybe US $1200.00 each.

If the instalation of MM2 still does not fix things, I would suggest that
you go to www.papajohn.org and get two pieces of info, 1) How to uninstall
MM and 2) How to install it (There is a section on the site relating to
situations where MM will not install). With those two pieces of advice you
will most likely fix it.

If not, then shout out for some more help
