I tried running Movie Maker for the first time but it crashed immediately. I
apparently inherited this (as I've read) from installing SP2...eons ago. In
an attempt to repair it, I've managed to install 2.0 over 2.1 and then take
2.0 back off again (I think). I've even tried re-installing the update that
put it on originally (I think)...KB892312. All to no avail...it still crashes
several seconds after starting it. The desktop is drawn and the pull down
menus will respond but I then get the dreaded "xxx has encountered a problem
and needs to close..." window. I'd like to just clean install 2.1 again but I
can't imagine going back dozens (hundreds?) of fixes to SP2. Ideas?

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

===
(You can disable ffdshow with this command:
regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax" )

yup, I've got ie7 and a little addicted to it. I might have to find a
different solution. All I was really trying to do was edit some simple movies
taken with my digital camera...and hopefully do something to shrink the size
of them.

Reading some of the other posts, I tried deleting qedit (though the suggested
batch file didn't work for me to start moviemk) and then immediately starting
movie maker. Runs just fine if i start it that way!
