I have been trying to use 1394 port to movie maker with no results. Moviemaker states that no capture device is available. I have tried using windows Xp update service pack with no results. Yes the camcorder is on and connected. It works fine with my brothers laptop running windows XP. Any ideas??

When connecting to your pc do you get the xp ping to say a device is
recognised and can view it in device amanger? Are you using the same cable
with both pc's? Just in case it is this that is faulty!! Is the 1394 card is
listed in device manager as fitted and working ok?

Is XP recognising the camera, ie does it ping when it is connected? Is the
firewire port ok in device manager?

If it doesn't show in device manager then this is the problem. Try removing
the card and refitting it in a different slot and let windows reinstall the
drivers.

Try getting hold of a add in card and disable the on-board and see if it
works. They are quite cheap these days even if you have to buy one.

Okay, I have the same problem since installing SP2, off the microsoft windows
update site.

SYMPTOMS:
Since installing SP2, neither Vegas nor Windows Movie Maker can see my Sony
HandyCam, which is plugged into one of my PC's PCI ports. When I plug the
camera in and put it in VCR mode, Windows brings up the little box asking me
what I want to do with the video capture device i just connected, but then
after that the programs i use can't find it.

I TRIED:
Disabling my IEEE port as a network adaptor.
Uninstalling it and re-installing it.
Physically taking it out of my pc, installing it in a different slot,

None of these things changed the symptoms at all. I tried plugging the
camera into my PowerBook G3, which doesn't have enough hard drive space for
the project I'm working on, but does have FireWire. It worked perfectly and I
could capture video and control the camera just fine.

QUESTIONS:
Does anybody know of a solution?
What's the easiest way to go back to XP SP1? Can I do it without
re-installing everything? I'm ok with re-installing my video software, but if
i'm gonna have to re-install everything just for this one project, forget
about it, i'll capture video at my friends' place.

I solved the problem by installing a new IEEE port (I had on on board), which
now is recognized and used by movie maker.
As to uninstalling SP2, you can do it by using control panel, but you have
also to uninstall all the other patches that come with it, otherwhise you are
not back to SP1.

Hello guys!

I am very happy that everything worked out. I am just new on these
capture-video thing, but I am smart enought to solve problems on my DELL
INSPIRON 8200. Please, go to this tittle:

TRANSFERRED MOVIE *FROM DIGITAL CAMERA* WRONGLY PLAYBACKED ON PC.

Please take a look at that and tell me what you think....More news to that
message is that I have recently discovered that my hard drive is formatted as
NTFS and my external hard drive(where I tried to keep what I have downloaded
from my camera) is a FAT32 device. Does this have something to do with my
problem? How can I get them compatible?

And more recently, a blue screen appeared on my computer when I rebooted it
(having my external hard drive plugged to it) and it said that there is an
issue of CONSISTENCY with my external hard drive. What does that mean?

I hope that I am in good hands with you guys...

THANKS!

I have read on a firewire mucic guys site, that sp2 will really cut down the
throughput on a 1394 port. He even gave involved instructions on how to, just
restore the sp1 1394 part and leave the rest of sp2.
