Adjusting audio fade in/out durations
I'm using Movie Maker 6.0 from my Vista.. I'm adjusting the audio on my video
clips and music files to fade in and out but the time that the program takes
to fade out a song from full volume to silence is very short - so short that
it's not far from sounding like I'm not using the fade at all. I know I can
adjust how long the video Fades are in the Transitions menu, but can I do
this with audio fades? How can I adjust the fade length to be longer than
what it sounds like (less than 1 second)? Tag: Making audio speed up? Tag: 63256
Movie Maker keeps closing down
Hi, as the title says my MM keeps closing down on me, I don't even get an
error message when it happens. Ive restarted my comp, tried it again, same
thing happens.
I was gonna uninstall it to reinstall it again, but I cant find it in the
remove programs list, so I tried to just reinstall over it, but still the
same problem.
It will let me on it for a few moments before it closes and I tried to view
the codecs through WMM in case they where causing the problem, but for some
reason I cant even get the option to do that anymore.
I was going to do a system restore, but I have too many important documents
on my computer to do that.

Shuts off without notice
Hi!
I'm in desperate need of some help here. Checked papaJohn's site but it all
flew over my head, really. So if anyone could explain this to me in a way I
can understand I'd be eternally grateful!
Didn't have so much trouble with Movie Maker in the beginning, but starting
a few months ago it crashed whenever I imported a too large file and cut out
some scenes. Lately it'd freeze even if the imported file was a small one.
Now it's started to shut down (without any notice of error) when saving the
file as a film or mp3. It saves half-way, then shuts down.
I really need some help with this!
(And my english isn't too good neither, maybe that's why I can't really
understand PapaJohn's site)
Thanks,

Burning to DVD

Have all avi clips, photos, transitions, effects and music put together.
I click to burn a dvd.
54% of the way through the system gathering the files, I receive and

Does this mean I have some sort of a corrupt file, or is there another issue

Hi-- Can anyone help? I've just tried to open Movie Maker for the first

Editing clip names
When I sort clips by NAME which is the date and time (2/21/2002 9:23 AM) I
get clips out of time sequence because of the way the dates and time are
created. It would have to be 2002/02/21 03:04:37 AM or yyyy/mm/dd hh:mm:33 ap
to sort in the correct time sequence. Can I go to some file and correct this
or do I have to rename each clip? Or, is the a way to set the NAME to the
correct format before importing? Tag: Making audio speed up? Tag: 63228

In my Windows XP version of MM I had more choices of title animations. I was
able to put titles on the clips in different locations and there were many
more effects. Now that I have Windows Vista MM 6.0, the title animations are

are very few animations. Is there a way to get more title animations? Tag: Making audio speed up? Tag: 63226
Highest Resolution for Slides?
Hi,
I used MM a year ago to make a slide show in .wmv format (with great
results) and am trying to relearn some of the finer points I've forgotten. (I
prefer MM to PS mainly because I find it easier to synch the images to music.)
I am making another slide show of about 300 digital photos. All of my images
were taken with a 4mp digicam and edited in Photoshop, but left at their
native resolution of 2272x1704x72dpi.
I did a trial run and tried to save my project as a .wmv file, using a
profile I think I downloaded from PapaJohn's site last year:
SlideShow-1024x768WMV9. (I am aiming for the absolute highest quality
possible.) When I went to create the .wmv file, I got an error message about
the file size being too big or something to that effect. Is this the FAT-32
issue that I've read about in other posts on this forum?
If using the above profile, should I downsize my images to 1024x768? Will
that affect final output quality? I ran another test with the images at
800x600, but while it wrote the .wmv file, the image quality was noticeably
less. I then did a third test, using only about 60 images - but still at
2272x1704 - and it turned out fabulous.
So I guess my question is: Are the images sized at 2272x1704 wasting pixels
and increasing the file size unnecessarily, given the limitations of the
1024x768 output? And if this isn't a FAT-32 issue, are there any other
workarounds?
I was thinking I could break the project into 5 or 6 smaller increments and
reassemble (I have BlazeMediaPro which can do this) but am unsure of how the
stitch points will look, and would have to separate them by musical piece.
Additionally, I would not be able to put transitions at those points, either,
and between songs are some of the more obvious places to have transitions.
Sorry for the long-winded post. Any ideas or advice would be welcome!
Thanks! Tag: Making audio speed up? Tag: 63211

the first video to show up my collection as the importing file message

the program and then reinstall it? Have Service Pack disk, or I could
download it I see.

Help! WMM2.1 crashing - blue screen
My system: Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, SP2 - AMD Athalon 64
Processor, 3400+, 2.20 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM, Physical Address Extension.
I've been using WMM2.1 without problems. Recently it started to hang/freeze
up when I was capturing video (from my Sony Digtal Handycam via firewire).
Now it is just crashing. I come back to it and the computer has restarted -
recovered from "serious error." The Windows error reporting displays a page
that says it's a device driver problem. I don't know what this could be.
I've tried a number of things I've seen online, including unchecking, moving
the temp file to my recently defragmented "D" drive, I don't display preview
during capture. I don't understand codecs, but I have a lot of .ax files
show up (81) when I search for them in My Computer. Only two come up in the
compatibility window of WMM2.1 (both from Nero). I've tried unchecking them,
but that doesn't help.

Compatibility List (Codecs/Filters) in MM2.1
Here's a sideline note about Movie Maker 2.1, something I found when working
on my latest project... a 4-1/2 minute flick about Chicago. Source files
were DV-AVI files, about 6 WMA music files, and a WMV Photo Story. The
project and source files were on an external USB drive.
My laptop's Tools > Options > compatiblity tab codec/filter list had 62 line
items. By default all but one or two were checked, which lets the unchecked
ones 'work with' with Movie Maker.
- With the default settings it took a full 4 minutes to open the project
file
- With all line items unchecked it took 5 seconds to open... and project
editing worked snappier and fine
This sets the stage for a change in routine use of Movie Maker
- I tend to let software work with its defaults until I have an issue to
resolve or a specific setting to change... so 60 codecs were allowed to
interface.
- I'm now going to leave all the line items unchecked and turn them on one
at a time as needed... such as the ffdshow codec to be able to use Motion
JPEG video files.
It also makes me wonder what's happening during the project opening. Why
with the 60 codecs checked does it take so long? More to ponder.

Alternative to WMM
I tried editing some home movies from a DVD using WMM. Since WMM couldn't
accept MPEG-2 files, I used AVI. However, the AVIs have degraded quality:
there are some transient splotches and motion artifacts. I've seen web
postings that talk about converting MPEG-2 to other formats, but it seems
likely they'd have problems too.
Does anybody have a sure-fire straightforward way to use WMM and preserve
the video quality? I have WMM v2.1.4046.0.
Otherwise, is there a low-cost alternative to WMM that will preserve the
video quality? Pinnacle, maybe?

Video Contest... and Can't Save Movie
The Virtual Earth group is running a video contest. Here's a link...
http://on10.net/Blogs/larry/want-to-win-a-zune/
I submitted my entry... a 4-1/2 minute flick Chicago Summer Fun... rendered
twice: once for MSN Soapbox for a higher quality copy
http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?vid=5e36fdc5-fcd6-4425-800e-9c362267dc7b
and then for YouTube using my custom profile
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-1NN-MAz7M
The project includes 4 video clips made from Microsoft's Virtual Earth.
The project went along well from start to submittals, but last night when I
tried to save an archival copy to a DV-AVI file I got the message about
Movie Maker not being able to save the movie to the specified location.
Verify... etc. etc. It was the first time I'd seen the message during this
project.
My project and source files were on two different external USB drives, which
made me wonder about a number of things. After lots of problem-solving I
concluded the issue was some sort of corruption in the project file. The
file was highly usable but corrupt.
Stripping clips from the project one at a time... until I had just one clip
left... didn't resolve it. But copying/pasting the clips from the corrupt
project file to a new one let me save it to DV-AVI fine. I added the info to
my website's Problem Solving > Can't Save a Movie page as another reason
that can cause the issue... a 'corrupt project' file can let you save to any
quality wmv file but not to a DV-AVI.
I'd been working on the project for a number of days and don't know when the
corruption started. My guess it was one of the times when my CPU overheated
in the middle of a rendering, abruptly shutting off the system.
It's not too late to do a contest submittal... and never too late for more
info about why a project can't be saved.

Saving Movie does not happen
I just made a project in movie maker and it will not let me save it as a
movie or WMV file.
1. I placed all video, pictures & music in a new folder on my harddrive
before starting
2. I imported them all into the project and built it
3. Saved the project in the same folder
4. There is plenty of memory on the harddrive
5. When I go to save the project into a movie it comes up w/ and error that
a file may not be there anymore, not enough memory space, etc.
Any ideas? I have about eight songs and three pictures. The rest is a
large number of WMV files (sports clips). I can get it to work w/ all the
music pictures, and some of the videos. At one point if I deleted some of
them and tried to save it it would not... but if I "undo" it and put some
back in.. it actually will save it.

Troubleshoot: How to correctly save new project in Windows Movie M

the projects in .mswmm format. I published both projects, each on its own DVD
and they work like a charm on DVD players. However, now when I open either
project in WMM, I cannot see any of the photos on the Storyboard. They
"cannot be found" although I can see them in the Collection folders of photos
imported for each respective project. In response to the pop-up, no, thank
you, I do not want to "browse" or reinsert and reorder hundreds of photos
individually. Can anyone help me on how to restore the missing photo links.
What can I have done wrong in saving the projects? I certainly need help.
Many thanks.
