Hey guys I have a problem that hopefully someone can answer quickly. I just
ripped a 30 second clip from a DVD using DVD Shrink. DVD Shrink creates the
.VOB file and then I can rename the extention to .mpg or .MPEG and play it in
WMP. Works fine! If I try to import that same clip into MM2 it crashes the
program. Any ideas why and how I can resolve this to get MM2 to take it so I
can do my editing and other things to it?

Thanks!

MM does not take well to MPG files.
Convert the file to AVI then import it into MM.

Hi....I use a program called 'AVS Converter'......you can get it at
www.download.com.
I think it cost $30 or so. But it is a favorite program of mine and
hundreds of thousands of people have downloaded it. You can convert files
into all the various formats.....from all the various formats. It will also
consolidate a bunch of files for you to put (burn) onto a DVD too. In that
respect it competes well with my 'Movie Factory' program. I use DVD Shrink
too, but often need to use the other free program 'DVD Decrypter' to get a
good rip off DVD. Periodically I get slow or sluggish scenes from my
conversions, but it works great 90% of the time. If you get AVS Converter
make sure you click on 'advanced' to sell the many possibilities of format
and quality you can set for your video. Often, I convert to WMV at high
quality, and take it into Movie Maker in that format.

I have one question here:

The .DAT files are not accepted for import into MM. On a previous occasion,
I changed the file extension to .MPG manually and then imported it into MM
and it worked.

What are these .DAT files? If they need to be converted to .AVI for editing
in MM, as suggested by you, is any free converter available for that? Can
you please suggest one or two?

Regards,
Murthy

You will get MPG files to work in MM sometimes but often times they don't.
For converting files check out this website:

In that case,
(*this* is the real question, I think)
what are the file types that MM would happily welcome for import?

Murthy

Check the Importing Source Files > Video > MPEG-2 page of my site... I just
updated it an hour ago to add a couple more posts that point to conversion
software.
