    - Black Bars at the sides? I have standard NTSC video - DV format 720 by 480. For some reason in Moviemaker there are black bars at the side, and the image is squished - making everyone look thin. The same thing happens when I play a clip from the same file in Media player.     - Black slides and Preview My WMM is now showing black slides and a black preview when I open old projects or even create new ones. the imported video/pictures/audio all seem to load fine. I can see them in the storyboard view and hear the audio however the slides I create in moviemaker such as titles etc. show as solid black in the storyboard.     - Preview problems with clips I've imported a wmv movie in movie maker from a digital movie camera. When I click a clip in the preview pane it doesn't start but if I put it in the timeline then it works. Besides, the picture of the clip in the preview pane is a frame of the previous clip, most of the time. I tried to import the movie in a notebook and it works very well: thus, it is not a problem of the movie. I've noticed that in the notebook, among the filters shown in the menu "option" there are two named "Windows Media Video Decoder", ver 8.0.0.4000" (file: wmv8ds32.ax) and "Windows Media Video Decoder", ver 8.0.0.4487" (file: wmvds32.ax).     - Video Freezing When Capturing I am having no problems with WMM other than when I am capturing a video from my Mini DV Camera. The problem is that when I am capturing, it will work fine for a little while - it is a random amount of time - and then it will just freeze out of the blue. I have had nothing wrong with this program otherwise, but I also just want to point out that I have no filters or anything that normally WOULD cause problems with this.     - Cannot burn a DVD I have a movie I saved to my computer in AVI format. I want to burn this movie to a DVD disc in DVD format so I can play it on most regular home DVD players. When I tried to do this with Movie Maker, it took 2 hours to burn it and when I tried to play the movie on my DVD player, the DVD player showed it as an MP3 and it wouldn't play the movie. Upon reading through the FAQ on Microsoft's website, I see that you have to save the movie in DVD format before burning it but the trouble is I didn't have that option. The FAQ showed Movie Maker has 20-30 formats you could save your movie in, one of those being DV format, and my Movie Maker program is only showing about 10 of these.     - No Video during playback - Audio Works When trying to play a project I'm working on, the screen stays black but the audio works. I read some other posts and tried converting to .avi. But when I import the .avi clip I get an error that I don't have the correct codec installed. However, I can play a .avi file outside of WMM. When I covert my file (which is originaly QTime) to .wmv and import, the video is cut up into a lot of different files, which none will play at all and the viewing screen turns green. I originally converted the files to .mpg and was having no problem at all. Then awhile ago the problem popped up with a black screen with the audio working. Any ideas? Thanks.     - Analog Video to AVI format I routinely import Mini-DV from my camera to Movie Maker as .avi files and then transfer the modified movie back to the camera. I then dump the result directly to my DVD recorder---(much quicker than burning on the computer). I would like to do the same thing with some of my older Hi-8 video tapes but MM doesn't seem to give me the option importing analog video as .avi files---only as Windows Media. This is wierd, because I can then save my modified .wmv movie to the computer as .avi (but with loss of quality). Any suggestions as to how I might get my Hi-8 tapes back onto Mini-DV?     - Can not change font/color/background in titles My MM has worked well for a long time. Today when creating a new movie, I added a title and needed to change the font size and background color. The menu inside the edit title dialog is completely missing. I've tried rebooting and it is not there. I've tried new and existing movies but it never shows up. I converted some DV AVI files to wmv formats and on playback in wmp, they look like they just have two colors, mainly green and a black silloute for the other.     - What settings are used in Vista's movie maker's "publish movie" options I really want Vista's Movie Maker (I realize this is the windowsxp.moviemaker group, but I didn't see one for Vista moviemaker) to be able to do batch encodes, as I have a lot of .mpg's to encode, but I've not been able to figure out a way to get it to do a batch, if it's even possible. Having said that, I really like the quality I get when I publish a movie, select "More Settings" and choose "Windows Media DVD Quality (3.0 Mbps). When I select that I see the following "Movie Settings": Bit rate: 3.0 Mbps Display size 720x480 pixels Aspect ration 4:3 Frames per second: 30 As I mention above, this produces a quality level I'm happy with, and it's pretty fast, but I can't batch. I've tried to replicate these settings in a .prx file and use it in the Windows Media batch encoder...and while it produces movies of the same quality, and I can batch, it's at least 2-4 times slower doing it than Movie Maker. I'm trying to get the best of all worlds and get the quality, speed, and batch ability. Below are the settings I'm using in my .prx file. Does someone know of a setting below I can use to make my batch encodes faster, does someone know of a way to batch in Movie Maker, or is there some better way to accomplish all 3 of my objectives?     - Saving Movie Files - Hung Hi, I created a 1:30sec movie and am saving to my computer. I went through the Save Movie Wizzard to start the process. I see the status bar as it's saving. It gets to 99% and hangs there. If I try to cancel out, it says it's still saving do you want to quit. I say no. It's been saving for 30 minutes. It was a 24 meg file. I have 300 gigs of free space. I have a P4 2.0 gighertz, 1 meg RAM. The movie played fine within Movie Maker. I check task manager, and Windows Movie Maker is running as opposed to not responding. My CPU usage is at 98-100%.     - NEED VIDEO IN THREE DAYS FOR MY WEDDING!!!!! HELP!! Ok, I'm about to go nuts here. I am getting married in three days. I have been working on putting together a video presentation for the reception and have spent no less than 60 hours working on this. Mainly because Movie Maker keeps screwing everything up! Ok, I have the 2.1 version. I have 4 songs, I have no idea how many pictures and every picture has a transition with about 4 title overlays total. I have a DELL 3100 that is relatively new. Every time I try to save the file and burn it to a CD which will be played on a laptop and projected onto a wall at the reception, I have problems. It will say that is has saved but when I go to watch it, it stops in the middle or it keeps going with the music but not the pictures or just jams up altogether and won't save at all. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been reading posts but to be honest, I am so burned out at this point, I'm ready to scream. I SO want this to work! I read a post about saving the file as a DVI file to your hard drive and then trying to burn it to a a CD. Does anyone know if this will give me the same quality video for playback as the "local playback for 2.1" option you can use when burning to a CD? Because that quality is great...however it won't save all the way. I'm at 65% saved at this point saving it to my desktop as a DVI. But I'm scared that it's again not going to save correctly or that if it does, when I try to burn the desktop version to my CD, I'm again going to have problems. I need some of help, when I do someting on Movie Maker, inmediately it
closes, well, when I want to open a document a bit heavy, it closes, when I
want to open a light document and I want to make a title, it closes, when I
want to make a new video, inter 5 and 10 minutes, it closes.

What the hell is fu(&%"#$ going on?

I have the exact same problem. Whenever I try to drag a collection file onto
my project, it instantly closes. There's no error and the event viewer shows
nothing.

You fail to mention your OS...if you are
running Vista...disregard the following.

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.
