I've been wondering about this for several days. I'm capturing video. I have
a hard drive that is 153 GB it looks like. I'm seing that I have 56% free
space now that I have spent some time capturing video. How can I handle this?
Should I possibly add another hard drive to my computer? Should I be saving
to a CD or a DVD instead of my hard drive? How do you all handle this?

Thanks for all your help here. It's greatly appreciated.

Basically I put in a second hard drive for storage. I also try to limit my
movie clips to less than 5 GB so I can back up the individual clips on data
DVDs as well. When the internal 200GB drive fills up, its time for an
external one!

I actually use both Steve's and Graham's suggestions.
If you really get into video editing, and based on other conversations I've
had with you I know you do, then harddrive space quickly becomes a
necessity. I have 2-180GB hard drives plus I archive with my DV tapes when I
am not working with specific footage and as an extra precaution with
important stuff that can't be shot again I also save the captured video
files to DVD Data disks.

Thank you all, I think a second hard drive is in my future plus backing up to
Data DVDs. I have never used an external hard drive, I will look into that
option also. This video editing is so much fun. Family members are now
getting into the act for Xmas presents and Family tree photos and
memorabilia. Fortunately I know how to do it for them with their help.

usb 2.0 external drives have become very affordable and do a nice job. to
be honest though, I basically use mine for "archiving" type purposes only,
and still transfer all the "In process" media to my main drive to work. I
have never really tested one for capturing directly or working with media
directly from one (not sure why - paranoid I guess.)

I capture directly to them, do projects on them, and render movies to
them.... never had an issue once you change the disk policy from 'quick or
safe removal' to 'performance'.

Well that depends on what you are trying to do.
You can quite easily render your project as a DV-AVI or WMV and then copy
that to the external drive using Windows Explorer. You can still access the
video with Movie Maker by importing it just like any other video but you
would not be able to edit the transitions and/or overlays.
Or if you want to be able to access the project for future editing you can
use explorer to move all your actual clips from the local drive to the
external drive. Now if you open the project you will have red X's in place
of the clips. Right click one of them and click "Browse for missing file..."
and navigate to the new clip location. Once you find one the program should
automatically find the rest.
Does that answer your question?

As to your other problem: What happens when you try to sign in?

Thank you very much Wojo.
I'll try that.
On the "Signing IN"....I enter details, correctly,as requested. My web page
refuse to accept tells me "Page not Available. I have tried refresh etc..many
times. At the end of the day I am directed to download a new Microsoft ADD
ON....which encourages me to pay subs for various pages on the Web/net. This
time, with direct link to my question from Outlook Express,no problem at all.

Thanks very much for your time.

.Hi Papa,
Info very interesting. Being thick....could you explain to me how I can Save
Project etc to my external drive, without losing any material?.

I also ask if you cr book refers to the MM info on resident files in MM..How
on earth can you get to the actual files to see what really is there. I
think mine has loads of junk in it o get my .avi files(Captured as suggested)
into MMaker? I have loads of Captured video filees in this format.MM will not
Accept them" "is not a valid Windows Movie Maker project file........Select
IMPORT into Collection"..Will not import either?

Sorry to "bat your ears" lastly...I have somehow "lost "Program\Files\Movie
Maker\Shared\sample 1.jpg" could not be found".Could you advise how to get
them back please?
Many,many thanks............................D'arcy

Hi D'arcy

Internal or external, a drive is just another place to store stuff... source
files, project files, and saved movies. You just pick the drive and folder
you want when you make or use any of them.

I don't understand why you would lose any material... when you save a
project file or a movie from one, all you are saving is the single MSWMM
project file or WMV/DV-AVI file.

Put any JPG image file in the folder and name it sample1.jpg and Movie Maker
will use it. Or get a copy of the file from another computer.

If your AVI files won't import into collections, please explain how you
captured them.

Hi Papa & thank you,

1. "The required file "C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Sample1.jpg "
could not be found." Pops up when I try to check Video Effects or
Transitions in MM. I do not Share my computer with any other a/c's.

2. Dv/avi files..Created direct from cam corder into MM Capture..Initialy I
go through routine of saving as project. MM refuses to bring back my project
files once saved, telling me it cannot accept .avi files?..Re capturing all
files to WMV(for computer),all seems to work OK.Problems occur when I select
DV/AVI(for making DVD's),instead of "Best quality for playback............."
as suggested by MM.

Many thanks for ypour quick reply.Very much appreciated by a
"thicky".........D'arcy

Hi!

with members due to my DELL computer not allowing me access to Web pages on
my main computer.I work here on laptop.

In MM somehow I have "lost" whatever it is allows me to check Transitions on
the view csreen before applying.Same applies to any attempt I make to enter a
title on selected clips in Timeline..in all cases I
getC:\....................\Sample 1jpg"could not be found...........Help to
sort this would be much appreciated..Perhaps I should re-download SP?
2.I use an X drive.Just Rendered a movie.When I try to Copy/Save to my X
drive I am told "Not enough disc space?? My Drive has 74.7GB FREE SPACE.My
movie tells me it is 6.81 GB in size....Why will it not save to my X Drive
(Not sure whether it should be Save or Copy from "My Videos"! Could you
please advise. D'arcy

Hi Papa,
As you will see from posts I am trying to resolve a number of problems..and
thank you and the team for the most helpful postings.Exacerbated by lack of
help from DELL Computers.

I save a movie..and am told by Wizard "Movie will play in clicking
Finish"...........no such luck?? What I get is the normal
posting"Movie.....avi,is not a valid WMM project file"..This I understand,my
project is now a movie. What I do not understand is why it will not play in
MM or Media Player. In the latter it tell me on the screen movie is playing
but it is'nt?

***Might be of interest to others...I save the same movie as a " Best
quality for playback on my Compute"r file,it weighs in at only 445 MB
compared to 6.81 GB as DV/AVI file will play in Media Player...........Why is
this

Movie Maker's standard images to preview effects and transitions are named
Sample1.jpg and Sample2.jpg, and in the c:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared
folder.

You can replace them with any of your own images... which sometimes is a
great thing to do... but keep copies to put back when finished using your
own.

keep chugging... we all go down that path...

I see mixed movie versus project issues in your post... maybe you have your
MSWMM project files linked to WMP as the default app to open them... which
wouldn't be right.

But I can't tell from what you say... maybe break it down to smaller
separate issues
