Are you connecting by usb?
If so, you need to use firewire.

I am having the exact same problem. I too have a Sony camcorder (HDD - Hard
Disk Drive - DCR-SR62 model) which does not have Firewire capability. I have
tried to use both my USB cable and RCA jacks - both give the same error
message mentioned by Todd.

Thank you for any suggestions.

HDD cams are not compatible with Movie maker in XP. YOu either need a
different software or to upgrade to MM in a high end vista release.

Oops, also meant to say, or copy the files to your pc using the usb cable
then convert them to wmv using something like windows media encoder
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/ConvertMpeg2wmv.html
then edit in movie maker

I'm having the same problem too. I have a Sony HC DCR-SR200. I did the
download of W Media Encoder (it's free and easy to do) as suggested,
converted a movie clip that was not previously working (getting that same
errormessage), and it now works in W Movie Maker. The conversion of that
video file (47.8 MB) in W Media Encoder did take a little bit of time though
and I followed the instructions supplied at
myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/ConvertMpeg2wmv.html....otherwise it would have
taken longer guessing what to do next, so if you have a lot of video to
convert, take that into consideration.
