WMM acknowledges that I have a Sony Digital Video Camera ready to capture
from but when I go to the video setting screen it will only allow me to
choose from Best quality for p/b on my computer or Other settings, the
Digital Device format (DV-AVI) is opaque so I can't click on it. Thanks for
all the great advice I've read from the many posters in this forum.

Sounds like you're not connecting with firewire.

I think I found the answer myself. Yes I was connecting with firewire but I
have a Sony DCR-IP1 video camera which is Micro MV and therefore is Mpeg2 and
MMV doesn't have the Sony Codecs so I have to capture using a USB port. If
I'm mistaken about any of the above please let me know.

Micro mv cams didn't come with firewire, so you would have been using USB.
They record videos in a format which isn't compatible with MM so it's
unlikely you'll be able to edit with it. Use the sony app which came with
the cam.
